2016 won’t be exciting or revolutionary for smartphones, and that’s good

Hello and happy new year. I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that innovation in smartphones has plateaued, and we'll only see incremental upgrades this year. The good news is that innovation in smartphones has plateaued and we'll only see incremental upgrades this year.

Since Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone back in 2007, we've seen these pocketable devices come a long way. The smartphone in your pocket is a perfectly capable computer now. But that's where it's going to be for a while. Manufacturers will introduce features that make this device easier to use, but you won't be seeing a major revolution in 2016.

The CEO of Xiaomi recently echoed this when he said that moments that "wow" consumers will be harder to find, and instead, brands will focus on features that help enhance day-to-day usage for customers.

Watch our video of top smartphones for 2015

All of this sounds bleak and pessimistic, but it's actually a good thing, if you ask me. For once, as customers, we won't have to choose between different devices based on a must-have feature that is exclusive to one. Instead, as smartphone innovation plateaus, our focus turns to the more important thing: buying a phone which makes our lives easier.

Innovation isn't dead, it's slowed down

The smartphone in your pocket is already a powerful piece of machinery. Heck, Microsoft thinks that with its new Windows 10 phones, you can actually use your phone as a functional Windows PC!

We already have fast-charging batteries, high-capacity batteries, and power banks. We have high-resolution screens, high-megapixel cameras, high-performance processors, and so on. We can talk to our phones and they talk back. They automatically remind us when we have a flight or a movie booking in our calendar. All of these parts, and others, will get incrementally better and smarter. And current performance will get cheaper.

In 2016, we'll probably see Android smartphone manufacturers adopt something similar to the pressure-sensitive screen on the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. We might even see docks that turn your Android phone into a Chrome OS PC, like the Windows 10 phones.

The most game-changing phone element for Indians in 2016 is going to be Reliance's pan-India 4G network, Jio, slated to launch in April-May. You don't need hardware innovation for 4G—a lot of phones already have it, and they're available across different prices.

The larger point is that this year probably won't see the launch of a phone that makes you think, "Wow, that is completely different and a game-changer. I must have it!" And that's a good thing. We don't need "new" as much. We need to utilise the phones we already have.

2016 is about customers, not engineers

Right now, there are plenty of smartphone users who either don't know about the many things their phones can do, or don't care. Adding a faster processor and more RAM is meaningless if people aren't already using what's available to them. And so companies are making it easier for users to understand their phones and utilise the features in it.

For example, even though Android has a healthy apps ecosystem, a lot of people don't use it. Parents will ask their kids to look up a service centre, when a quick Google search can do it in a minute. New radio cabs like Uber and Ola are still not used by a large percentage of people, who would find these convenient. When buying a new phone, most people will look for an exchange discount for their old phone from the shopkeeper, rather than getting a better rate on Quikr or OLX.

Must read: 2015, when affordable smartphones became flagships

Micromax made a small step in the right direction with the Around Yu integrated service platform in its Yutopia phone. Similarly, the Yutopia also launched an exchange scheme, so that you can upgrade to next year's model with at least a 40% buyback discount. Gionee launched an app, Gionee Care, to figure out your closest service centre, check your warranty, and get any technical help.

In the word "smartphone", the "smart" is now not about what it *can* do with hardware, it's more about what it *will* do with software. And smart software usually doesn't give that "wow" experience. But it makes lives better in the simplest way: by helping you do more with what you already have.

What all this means for you

So if smartphone innovation is stagnating or plateauing, what does it mean for the consumer? Well, first of all, your purchase price just dropped significantly. Even inexpensive smartphones come with hardware that is good enough for most users. Yes, a Snapdragon 820 processor is better than a Snapdragon 800 processor, but it's not such a huge upgrade that you need to change phones. Similarly, the 400-500 mAh gap between a 4000mAh battery and a 3600mAh battery isn't as substantial as the same gap between a 2000mAh and a 2500mAh phone.

You also get a longer life out of your electronics. They won't get or feel outdated as fast as they willl have a couple of years ago.

As a user, 2016 can be a great year. You get good hardware at affordable prices, and it is sufficiently future-proof. Which gives you the time to learn how to use it well and really maximise the experience. It's not exciting, it's not revolutionary—and that's a good thing.

iPhone 6c Rumors, Release Date and Specs: 4-INCH iPhone With Larger Battery?

After releasing a few bestseller phones this year, Apple is ready to launch another winner: the iPhone 6c. According to reports, the iPhone 6c will be a 4-inch smartphone with 1642 mAh battery. It will be slightly larger than iPhone 5s, which had 1570 mAh. Mass production of the unit will begin in January.

While the iPhone 5c is available in bright colors like blue and green and was made of plastic, it is rumored that the iPhone 6c will arrive in three colors: gold, silver and black, according to IDT. The new phone will not have a plastic casing, instead, it will be metallic like other iPhones.

According to Digital Trends, the iPhone 6C will be a mid-range smartphone at £300/$400 (AU$500). Likewise, the iPhone 6c includes an A9 chip, 2GB memory, 1136×640 4-inch screen, Touch ID and NFC capability for Apple Pay. But it will not have 3D Touch as per the latest updates.

Moreover, the iPhone 6c is expected to have an improved FaceTime HD camera with f2.2 aperture. There will be a digital camera with the light splitter. It would split red, green and blue light and send each to a dedicated sensor. This feature will help the user to capture clear and sharper images.

Last week it was reported that the iPhone 6c will have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2.5D curved edge cover glass just like with the iPhone 6s and 6s plus. Along with these features, you have a 1.2- megapixel front-facing camera to click better selfies. Since there are no updates debunking this rumor, we can expect a better camera  feature from iPhone 6c.

Apple has considered sapphire display to deliver a higher degree scratch and shatter resistance. According to tech experts, it will be better than Gorilla Glass. The sapphire display worked well in Apple Watch. There is a possibility of including OLED technology to provide better contrast.

Apple may unleash iPhone 6c in March during a media event along with the next-gen Apple Watch, according to BGR. Meanwhile, Samsung Galaxy 7 and LG G5 are also targeting the same market as does iPhone 6c.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Leaks, Latest News, Release Date

The latest leaks on Xiaomi Mi 5 include a 27-second video and press renders of the smartphone, confirming rumors that this smartphone has the smallest fingerprint sensor.

The latest Mi5 video which is 27 second long was shared on Chinese social network Weibo. It opens with a snow white hue variant Xiaomi Mi 5 device placed in an elegant wooden dock. The user then swipes the device to open the Weibo app and that's about it. According to IBTimes report, the promo video confirms the rumors of the fingerprint sensor which is oval in shape and is present in place of home-screen button. The video, however, is too short to provide any details about the hardware specs of the device.

The press renders of the Mi 5, which were released on various websites too, present a similar phone. The smartphone will be available in white, gold, pink and black color variants according to a TechnoBuffalo report. The handset features a metal frame with chamfered edges and a USB Type-C connector at the bottom, flanked by a couple of antenna bands and fine-drilled speaker grilles. The photos also show an oval shaped fingerprint sensor embedded in home-screen button, reportedly the world's smallest fingerprint scanner. The Xiaomi Mi5 features 2.5D glass sheet on the front and 3D glass cover on the back panel as revealed by a source to GforGames.

Other hardware specifications of the Xiaomi Mi 5 include an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 530 GPU backed by 4GB LPDDR3 RAM. The smartphone will include a 5.2-inch QHD display along with 2.5D curved glass and 3D glass back panel. The phone will also feature a 16MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and 8MP front facing camera. The phone will come in two variants in terms of internal storage with 32GB and 64GB eMMC. Mi 5 will run MIUI v7.0 OS based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and powered by 3600mAh battery with Quick Charge technology.

Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to launch in early 2016 and possibly be priced at 1,999 yuan (US$ 308) for the Mi 5 base model and 2,299 yuan (US$ 354) for the Mi 5 Plus model.

It was recently announced that HTC has released yet another affordable Android smartphone in the Chinese telecoms market by launching its HTC One X9 this Christmas, as stated by Engadget.

The other highlight of X9 is that it incorporates BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers.

So far HTC has only mentioned a release in China. Delivering on a promise made earlier in the month to send updates of 6.0.1 and 6.0 to each phone, respectively, before 2016, the new versions of Android should arrive within the next 24 hours. There's also a secondary UltraPixel camera in the front.

The announcement is for those in the U.S., GSM Arena notes, though for those outside the U.S. there is still no announcement regarding any upgrade to Android Marshmallow for the HTC One M9. Coming to the software front, the handset runs an unspecified version of Android with the latest Sense UI interface on top.

Top 5 smartphones to launch in 2016: iPhone 7, Galaxy S7, OnePlus 3 and more

A customer shows a newly purchased iPhone 6S Plus at the Apple Retail in Palo Alto, California September 25, 2015Reuters

Over the years, smartphones have gone from being just a style statement to a major part of our lives. Throughout 2015, we witnessed some incredible smartphones from a lot of companies ranging from Apple to Samsung and OnePlus to Xiaomi, and more. Every phone surprised in its own special way.

As we step into a new year, there are going to be some even bigger and better releases lined up. The list of all the new smartphones coming in 2016 is quite lengthy, but we wish start off with some of the most hyped and anticipated releases. Here are some of the most-talked-about flagship smartphones expected in 2016 that have garnered a lot of attention via rumours and speculations.

    Apple iPhone 7

Apple will continue its annual iPhone upgrade system next year as well. Going by Apple's trend, iPhone 7 will be a major overhaul in terms of design and specs. There have been several rumours suggesting a lot of changes and upgrades in the iPhone 6s successor.

According to a recent report, Apple might use Liquid metal and glass combination for its new iPhone. Some reports also suggested Apple might remove the standard 3.5mm headphone jack and the popular Home button to make the iPhone 7 slimmer. There hasn't been any concrete evidence to support the claims, but rumours have it that iPhone 7 will be the first iPhone to feature a waterproof body.

Apple will launch iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September, still a long way away for new rumours.

    Samsung Galaxy S7

Samsung Galaxy S7 rumours are on the rise, considering the launch is just around the corner. Expected in February, Galaxy S7 will come with major developments and with an Edge variant.

A fresh report from Samsung's home turf revealed that the company will have 5 million Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge units ready for launch. This will certainly overcome the major supply issues Samsung suffered with Galaxy S6 Edge.

As for the specs, Galaxy S7 will sport Quad HD resolution display, Exynos 8890 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, USB Type-C port, pressure sensitive display, iris scanner and fast-charging technology. We'll know more for sure when Samsung officially unveils the new flagship.

    Xiaomi Mi 5

Since we are considering the most-talked-about and rumoured flagships expected in 2016, Xiaomi Mi 5 easily makes it to the list. Xiaomi's flagship upgrade stopped at Mi 4 in 2014, which was not succeeded throughout 2015 as everyone expected. Ever since, Xiaomi Mi 5 has managed to stay in the news with a series of leaks and rumours.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said about the Mi 5 smartphone and the reason behind its delay that the Mi 5 was going to be "very, very good" and "worth the wait", adding that the company does not want to rush towards an early release.

Rumours have pointed out that the Mi 5 smartphone will feature a 5.2-inch Quad HD display, Gorilla Glass 4, 20MP primary camera with dual LED flash, PDAF, OIS and an accompanying 8MP front-snapper. The handset will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, a 3,000mAh battery and Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI 7 ROM.

Xiaomi will get in line with other flagships with advanced features such as biometric scanner, USB Type-C port and quick-charging technology.

    Google Nexus 6 2016

Google Nexus 6P was praised for its design and features, and its upcoming successor is going to be more advanced. Little is known about the Nexus 6 2016, but from what we know so far, the new handset will run Android N software.

It is quite obvious for the next Nexus flagship to run Google's latest software, but rumours indicate other features such as Snapdragon 820 chipset. There's a lot to learn about the unannounced Nexus 6 2016, which we expect in 2016.

    OnePlus 3

OnePlus was quite active throughout 2015, launching two new smartphones, new earphones and a wide range of accessories. In 2016, OnePlus' biggest release will be the next flagship, which may be called OnePlus 3. We haven't learnt much about the unannounced phone, but it is quite clear that OnePlus will make thoughtful upgrades compared to OnePlus 2.

Rumours have it that OnePlus 3 will feature the same Full-HD display but use the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset to go with other improved specs. Considering that OnePlus 2 was released in August, the 2016 flagship will be launched around the same time, with more details coming soon.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Leaked! Samsung Implements New Launch Strategy In Partnership With World’s Largest TelCom Company

Samsung has been quite lay low on its products this year but it doesn't mean they are not brewing "the next big thing." It has been reported that Samsung's newest Galaxy S7 has been leaked by China Mobile, the world's largest telecommunications company with over 800 million subscribers.

A Weibo blogger posted a photograph that features the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Edge. They also featured the release date range for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (32GB). Alongside these big releases are the new Huawei Mate 8 and the ZTE Axon Mini.

Sources told Slashgear that the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge would follow Samsung's traditional release dates which usually coincide with the Mobile World Congress that will happen in February 2016.

Samsung will allegedly release more lines of smartphones in March like the Samsung Galaxy A7 and Samsung Galaxy A5 for the lower-tiered markets. At least one of these smartphones might be released in the U.S. sooner than the worldwide launch.

    Samsung Shifting Gears

According to Forbes, the immediate release of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Edge would mean that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge had a limited lifecycle of 10 months. Galaxy S6 was launched last March and it was made available to the market in April.

Though there have been so many people who bought the Samsung S6 and S6 Edge over the holidays, this is a very good strategy for Samsung. As Forbes noted, this could actually give Samsung a "bigger head start on the new iPhone generations."

This is not the first time Samsung has implemented quite a drastic update. The huge Korean company also implemented a 10-month gap between Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5, which was launched last August. The Galaxy Note 5 had a one-month advantage over the iPhone 6S Plus. It was the same when they launched the Galaxy Note 4 which went ahead of iPhone 6 Plus.

If they would launch the Galaxy S7 this coming February, they would have a 7-month head start over the suspected September launch for the rumoured iPhone 7.

    3 Big Galaxy Reveals

Smartphones are getting slimmer and bigger with each and every launch, but Samsung is allegedly upping their game with the new Samsung Galaxy S7. According to SamMobile, Samsung will launch three variants of the Samsung Galaxy S7. It was rumoured that the new Samsung Galaxy S7 will not come in the normal flat screen model. It could be launched in the new curved screen variant with two different screen sizes.

Galaxy S7 concept. Image credit: igalaxys7.com

The curved Samsung Galaxy S7s could follow the general standard and super-sized Plus versions that other Samsung lines had. If this will be implemented, Samsung will have been on top of the smartphone innovation again.

Samsung was not the first innovator of the curved smartphone display. LG has already done that with the LG G Flex series. Samsung tried to have a couple of the curved features with the Samsung Galaxy Round and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, but the new line is suspected to bring out the best of both worlds.

The Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7 Edge+ would be released in 2016 but could be launched at different quarters of the year. It was suspected that Samsung will focus the initial release on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge on February so they can highlight the bigger versions, Galaxy S7 Edge + and Galaxy Note 6, on the latter part of the year.

Though the separate launch for the Galaxy note might not be the normal Samsung release strategy, Samsung might be trying to make a comeback with their Galaxy Note line.

How to transfer everything to your new phone

    How to transfer contacts

Despite all the amazing features smartphones have these days, they are still primarily a method of communication, so your contacts are probably pretty important to you. Luckily the days of having to write them all down and manually enter them in the new phone are long gone. Here are the alternatives.

Transferring your contacts: Synchronize Google Account

This is probably the simplest method of them all. If you've previously saved your contacts to your Google account you can just log into it and pick them up on your new smartphone. Just go Settings > Account > Google and toggle the Contacts Sync switch to on.

If you have multiple Google accounts you can pick the one you use the most or merge them all.

googlecalendar1 You can sync your Google account with various devices. / © Google Transferring contacts: From Android to iPhone or iPad

Once you've followed the process detailed above, it's easy to transfer your contacts to an iPhone or an iPad too. Just go to Settings, then Add Account, hit the Google option and log in. Check back a few minutes later and all your email, phone and other contacts will be synced.

You can also select which elements of your Gmail contacts you want to send across – for example you may not want to sync your calendar in case it doubles up with the one on your phone.

Transferring your contacts: Via SD card

If both your old and new phone have SD card slots, you can transfer contacts using a memory card. Just open the contacts section of your old phone and hit the import/export button. Then select export to storage or something along those lines.

Next, pop the SD card in the new phone, go to the address book and find import on the menu and follow the instructions from there. The only problem with this technique is the potential for duplicate contacts, especially if you've already synced from Google. But there is a solution at the link below.

AndroidPIT Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge microSD card You can also transfer with SD cards. / © ANDROIDPIT Transferring your contacts: Via SIM card

If you want to change phones but keep your SIM card, you could use the old fashioned method for keeping contacts – essentially copying all the relevant contacts to the SIM and carrying them over.

The advantage of this is you can manually select which ones to take with you (and have a bit of a spring clean) but the downside is that most SIMs are limited to about 200 contacts. The other potential issues are that the option to export to SIM is not even provided after Android 5.0 Lollipop and you are also likely to create duplicates – so this one's probably a last resort.

Transferring your contacts: From iPhone to Android

Unsurprisingly, data transfer between the great smartphone rivals is not always easy but, for contacts, at least, there's a fairly simple solution. On one of its support pages, Google has explained how to synchronize Gmail, Calendar and Contacts on iPhone and iPad.

Once you have a Google account set up on your Apple device, it will appear in the E-mail, Contacts and Calendars field, found in Settings. You can then perform the steps listed in the Synchronize Google Accounts step above.

Many Android phone manufacturers offer their own solutions for transferring contacts from one phone to another. We've outlined some of them below.

    Motorola Migrate

Motorola Migrate must be installed on both the old and new devices to work. Once that's the case, any data can be transferred by Bluetooth.

    Sony Xperia Transfer

Sony's system works in much the same way as Motorola's and will transfer content and contact from iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone or other Android devices.

    Samsung SmartSwitch Mobile

The Android market leader also has its own setup, which attempts to make the switch to Samsung as simple as possible, with Samsung Smart Switch. It can deal with the change from iPhones, older models of Galaxy devices or other Android models. There's plenty of detail on Samsung's support page.

    HTC Transfer Tool

The imaginatively named HTC Transfer Tool works on the same basis as Motorola's and Sony's and must be installed on both old and new devices.

    LG Back Up

LG Back Up works when installed on an old and new LG phones and uses Wi-Fi hotspot to transfer all sorts of data, including contacts, pictures and messages.

    Keeping your old texts

If you are still attached to their old text messages, the best way to move them onto your new phone is by downloading SMS Backup and Restore, a free app that does exactly what you'd expect it to.

Messages are stored in XML format and can then be sent to your new smartphone over Bluetooth, by email or saved then downloaded from the cloud. You'll need to install the app on your new phone in order to pick your messages up.

This is a solution that works on all Android phones, but some individual manufacturer solutions (such as Motorola Migrate) bring messages over as a matter of course, so check whether yours does before you use this option.

    Keeping WhatsApp chats

One of best ways to keep all the pictures, videos and texts that were contained in your old WhatsApp is through a third party app. We have a tutorial on how to transfer WhatsApp conversions to a new device at the link.

Following a recent WhatsApp update, you can also now back WhatsApp chats up to Google Drive.

    Transferring photos

The easiest solution for transferring photos is to automatically back up your photos to the cloud. Apps such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Google+ offer auto-synchronization when your device is attached to a Wi-Fi network so you can access your photos from anywhere.

Alternatively, you can transfer individual images or albums from phone to phone via Bluetooth. But if you have a large number of photos or very high res images, this will take a long time. If both devices have an SD card slot, SD card transfer might be easier.

AndroidPIT SkyHub cloud storage photos There are a number of ways to transfer your photos.

You can also use a PC. Just connect the phone to the PC with a USB lead, copy the images folder (or whatever photos you want) onto the desktop and the reverse the process for the new phone.

To transfer photos and videos from Android to iPhone, Apple recommends using Copy My Data, which, when installed, will give you a step-by-step guide.

    Transferring music

Generally speaking, the methods that applied to the transferring of photos will apply to transferring music too. The only major sticking point with music may be the size of your collection. If it's anything over a few gigabytes, be prepared to wait a while or be selective in what you transfer.

You'll usually find your tracks in the Music directory and they should pop up as an openable option when you plug your phone into your computer.

music android androidpit You can transfer music fairly easily. / © ANDROIDPIT

If you want to transfer music from an Android to an iPhone with a Mac, you'll need Android File Transfer. Once you've followed the in-app instructions, the new music will appear in the Finder section of your Mac and you can just accept the list as it shows up in your iTunes library. There's more in-depth information on this here.

    Transferring apps and their data

Assuming you log in to your new phone with your Google account, all the apps you've already downloaded should appear automatically – although in Android 5.0 Lollipop you'll be asked which ones you want to keep.

However, if you want the data to come across too (stuff like saved games, high scores, personalized settings) then you're best off using one of the apps listed at the link below.

Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to do this from Android to Apple so you'll have to re-download all your apps manually if you're moving to an iPhone and pay again for in the App Store rather than Play Store.

Your phone should now be completely set up and feeling a little like your old one. Except faster and shinier and better-looking, of course.

    Android One

Google isn't done with Android One just yet. During his recent India trip CEO Sundar Pichai called Android One programme a success even when industry pundits differed. So, in April, Google may bring a high-end yet affordable Android One smartphone with Lava, featuring 4G and latest specifications.

HTC announces new 'One X9' handset exclusive to China

HTC One X9 specifications and features: The One X9 flaunts a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) IPS display.

"The recent 5.5" One X9 produced by HTC has a large screen with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 and is operated by the powerful MediaTek chip along with 3 GB of RAM. We will keep you posted as and when we have more information about India launch of the One X9.

Like the more expensive recently introduced HTC One A9 smartphone, the X9 also boasts of same camera features. But considering the HTC One A9 was released with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, it wouldn't be surprising if it went the same route with the One M9.

HTC China offered a teaser yesterday that suggested the company might unveil the rumored One X9 mid-range smartphone on December 24.

The Android 6.0 update should be arriving on the HTC One M9 now. HTC itself use on screen navigation buttons in its other phones. Rumors suggest One X9 comes in a metal body with front facing speakers and capacitive buttons. An UltraPixel camera at the front serves video calls and selfies.

The HTC One X9 is now available in China for 2,399 yuan ($370) without a contract; global pricing and availability have not been announced. However, if you want to install faster the Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your Zenfone 2, then you should know that there is a custom ROM which can be installed on your device right away.

Earlier, specs of the device were released through a leaked certification from TENAA, reported Phones Review. This price pits the device below the One A9, which is priced at 2,799 CNY ($430), if you compare the device with their price in the Chinese market. There's still no word on an official release date, and as far as we can tell the new phone isn't headed to the USA anytime soon.

Windows 10 Mobile Release Date News: Release Pushed Out To 2016

The latest Windows operating system, Windows 10, has been released for personal computers during the latter part of 2015. While most Windows users were expecting their mobile devices to receive the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS before the end of 2015, Microsoft recently shared disappointing news about the release date of the mobile OS. According to a report in Digital Trends, Microsoft has pushed out the update of Windows 8 and 8.1 mobile OS to early 2016.

The company had previously targeted a December 2015 release, but in a recent statement, Microsoft said, "The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones." The statement was silent about the exact dates of the rollout as well as the reason for the delayed release.

While the newer Lumia smartphones are coming with Windows 10 Mobile out of the box, the fate of older Lumia phone models is still not certain. When Microsoft failed to announce the update schedule for older Lumia phones, many people were disappointed. Microsoft said that they were working with their mobile operators and Windows Insiders to test the update on the older models.

It looks like the update will be coming from Microsoft directly and not from the mobile carriers. This is because the company believes that providing the update is a service that they can offer together with "security updates, new features and capabilities."

The company earlier shared which of their smartphones will first receive the update. According to the official list, first in line to get the update are the Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930, which will "receive a free upgrade when available."

In the meantime, Windows Insiders can get a hold of the Technical Preview for the mobile OS. According to the report, among the changes expected on smartphones include a keyboard positioning feature which is useful for larger phablets. A new notification center will also be made available, as well as quick action settings and design improvements in some of the core Windows apps.

Lenovo Vibe S1 review: The mid-range smartphone category has a new contender

Lenovo has been aggressively releasing smartphones this year, specially in the budget segment. One look at the Google smartphone search trends for 2015 shows that more than one Lenovo smartphone made it to the most searched phones list of 2015. Lenovo has certainly come into its own this year in the smartphone segment. Motorola, which is also owned by Lenovo, has been taking care of the high end segment of the market with the Moto X Play and the Moto X Style, and the Moto X Force which is expected to come next month.

So towards the end of the year, Lenovo has decided to release the Vibe S1 which was first launched at IFA in Berlin. The Vibe is becoming a sub-series within the Lenovo smartphone portfolio with three other smartphones – Vibe Shot, Vibe P1 and Vibe P1m also released this year. So here is a detailed review of the Lenovo Vibe S1

    Build and Design: 8/10

    IMG_20151221_175900

    IMG_20151221_175900

If the A-series phones from Lenovo had a very functional and somewhat boring design, the aesthetics on the Lenovo Vibe S1 will certainly take you by surprise, in a pleasant way. The Vibe S1 comes with a curved back design and has a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 cover on the front and rear, along with an aluminum frame. The phone comes in two colour variants – Pearl white and Midnight Blue of which the latter certainly looks more impressive.

    IMG_20151221_175608

    IMG_20151221_175608

The phone has the volume rocker and power/standby buttons on the right hand side, the 3.5mm audio jack is present on the top, on the left hand side you have the dual SIM card slot. This is a hybrid slot, so you can either use two SIM cards or one SIM and microSD card. The micro USB charging and data transfer port is present on the base and is surrounded by speaker grilles section on either side. But one needs to note that there is only one speaker on the right hand side. The rear side just has the camera section located in the top centre with the LED flash unit below it.

    IMG_20151221_175648

    IMG_20151221_175648

The phone measures around 7.8mm thick on its thinner edges and weighs a light 132 grams. The rear side does tend to collect fingerprint smudges and you will need to be constantly cleaning it, specially since it is a reflective surface and smudges are easily visible. Thanks to the 5-inch form factor, one handed use is not so difficult, but you have to be careful as the phone does tend to get slippery.

    Features: 7.5/10

The Lenovo Vibe S1 features a MediaTek MT6752 chipset which houses an octa-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz and a Mali T760 GPU. This is paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage out of which around 25GB is usable space. You can also expand the storage by adding in a microSD card of up to 128GB. The phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop along with the Lenovo VibeUI running atop it. We will get into the details of the VibeUI in the software section.

    IMG_20151221_175737

    IMG_20151221_175737

The phone comes with a dual nano SIM card slot which is hybrid in nature, so with the second slot you will have to select between a SIM card or expanding storage. In terms of other connectivity options, you have Wi-fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with A-GPS and so on. There is a non-removable 2420mAh battery.

    IMG_20151221_175926

    IMG_20151221_175926

There is a 13MP camera on the rear side and an 8MP camera in the front. Rather there are two front-facing cameras – one 8MP and another 2MP, making this the first phone in the world with a dual front-facing camera. We will talk in detail about this under the camera section.

    Software: 7/10

Lenovo Vibe S1 comes with Lenovo's proprietary Vibe UI atop the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. Now Vibe UI is known to be a bit on the heavier side thanks to the pre-loaded apps that come with the phone. But thanks to the MediaTek MT6752 chipset, along with 3GB of RAM, things do run fine. Some of the preloaded apps include ShareIt, SyncIt, CloneIt, Theme Centre, Lenovo Companion, Guvera Music, Navigate and some gaming apps among others. As compared to the boat load of apps we've seen with the Asus ZenUI, the VibeUI certainly has more useful apps. You cannot uninstall the Lenovo apps though.

    BM2

    BM2

Like most Chinese phone skins, the Vibe UI too does not have an app drawer. The notification tab has a good 3×5 grid letting you speed up certain operations. In the settings menu, you get multiple options to tweak your phone. For instance, you can play around with the colour balance, enable high sensitivity touch when you are using the phone with gloves on, double tap to wake up the display and so on. Wide touch gives you the option to have a floating button with your favourite apps on it from any app, without having to exit it. You also get gesture support for Wide Touch, which is quite nifty.

The Secure Zone feature lets you have the same set of apps in a more private zone, which gives an extra layer of security. So basically you can have one gmail account in the open zone and another one in the secure zone. If you are using two WhatsApp accounts on the dual SIM, you can have one each in the open zone and secure zone and so on. Notifications from secure zone apps show up with a red dot on them. Switching between the two zones is as easy as tapping the Secure Zone icon on the quick notification drop down. This is an interesting feature on the Vibe UI interface.

    Display: 7.5/10

The 5-inch full HD display on the Lenovo Vibe S1 is quite impressive and you get a pixel density of 441ppi. Colours are vibrant and the IPS LCD display has great viewing angles. The text appears crisp and there was no issue with sunlight legibility. The Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection does tend to collect fingerprint smudges and needs to be cleaned often.

The display was quite good and it was a pleasure to watch videos on it. Despite being an LCD display, the contrast ratio on the Vibe S1 is quite good. Black levels are sufficiently deep, but the display does turn into a mirror in dark scenes.

    Performance: 7.5/10

The call quality on the Lenovo Vibe S1 was quite good with the audio speakers being loud and clear. The audio speaker section is a bit lacking in terms of sound quality but is sufficiently loud.

    BM1

    BM1

The MediaTek MT6752 along with 3GB of RAM ensures that the phone runs smooth. The VibeUI skin does not slow down the device, although you can still experience that slight bit of lag when switching between apps or opening between folders. The camera app does take a bit longer to open and it can be annoying if you want to take that quick street shot. However, this does not mar the overall user experience.

    BM3

    BM3

In terms of benchmarks, the phone gave scores which were higher than Snapdragon 615 sporting phones. So clearly the MT6752 is the new mid-range chipset to look forward to. In some tests, the scores obtained on the Vibe S1 were closer to that on the Snapdragon 801 + 3GB RAM combination phones such as Xiaomi Mi4 or OnePlus X.

Gaming on the Lenovo Vibe S1 is fun and we could play Asphalt 8: Airborne at the highest graphics level without any slowdown. The phone does heat up on the rear side, but it never got really hot enough to make it unbearable.

    Camera: 8/10

On the rear side you have a 13MP camera with phase detect autofocus and on the front you have an 8MP and a 2MP camera. This makes it the first phone to sport two front-facing cameras. The 8MP camera is the major camera while the 2MP camera is used more for depth sensing in order to let you isolate your selfie from the background.

    IMG_20151221_175617

    IMG_20151221_175617

The camera interface on the Lenovo Vibe S1 is quite simple and barring the HDR mode, ISO and White balance adjustment there is no other manual settings. You can select between the Auto and Panorama modes. But with the front camera, you are presented with some interesting features. For starters, in case you want to activate both the front cameras, then you need to select the double-aperture icon. Under the settings menu on the front camera, you can select resolution, snap mode, mirroring mode and so on. After you have clicked a selfie with the dual camera setup, you can then make edits such as blurring the background or changing the background altogether. It is quite a neat feature to play around with and selfie enthusiasts will like it.

    IMG_20151205_110359

In terms of image quality, the daylight photos are impressive and packed with details. Although we were not expecting stellar performance in low light situations, the Vibe S1 can certainly hold its own in that department. The focussing speeds do take a hit in low light, but the phone is able to retain enough detail. While the low light image quality is nowhere close to that on the Nexus 6P or Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, it is certainly better than the OnePlus X.

    Battery Life: 7/10

    Screenshot_2015-12-21-10-22-58-274

    Screenshot_2015-12-21-10-22-58-274

Battery life on the Vibe S1 is good enough considering the 2,420mAh capacity. And it will easily last you for a work day and on regular usage, you can use it for a day. But don't have too many expectations if you are a power user. A 100 percent charge at 9am with use such as calling, messaging, video streaming, surfing the web can make the phone go on till about 6pm after which you will need to charge the device. Gaming will exhaust the battery sooner. PC Mark for Android gave an onscreen time of 7 hours 50 mins.

    Verdict and Price in India

Lenovo Vibe S1 is certainly a breath of fresh air in the sub Rs 20,000 price bracket. The design on this phone makes it really stand out from competition. Only OnePlus X offers a comparable design. But the Lenovo Vibe S1 leaves the OnePlus X behind in a lot of departments including camera and battery life performance.

The MediaTek MT6752 chipset paired with 3GB of RAM gives the Vibe S1 enough horsepower to ensure that the performance is stutter-free. Even playing heavy games wasn't an issue with the Vibe S1 and heat management is good. The camera performance and image quality on the Vibe S1 is second only to the Xiaomi Mi 4 in this price bracket. We just wished the battery life was good on heavy usage. But as compared to the OnePlus X, it is certainly better.

So should you buy the phone? Well, the Lenovo Vibe S1 is definitely a phone worth considering at Rs 15,999. The beautiful design, respectable internal specs and a decent performance make it a worthy phone in the under Rs 20,000 price bracket. If you can look beyond the Vibe UI skin, then the Vibe S1 makes a better buying option than the OnePlus X.

Lenovo's family member Moto X Play, which is slightly more expensive, is the only worthy competitor to the Vibe S1. In case you can stretch your budget, then the Moto X Play is the device to go for under Rs 20,000.
