New poll: Growth in ‘underconnected’ Californians

At first glance, the latest data on California's digital divide looks like amazingly good news.

A whopping 84 percent of Californians now have access to broadband internet at home, up 9 percentage points since 2014, according to a new Field Poll.

At that rate, the digital divide — the gulf between the information haves and have nots — could be wiped out in less than three years.

But most of those gains have come from increased smartphone use. In the past year alone, there's been a near doubling — from 8 percent to 14 percent — of state residents now online because of smartphones. Meanwhile, the percentage of Californians connecting to the internet via a laptop or a desktop has remained flat for several years.

"That is the biggest problem," said Mark DiCamillo, director of The Field Poll, which conducted the survey for the California Emerging Technology Fund, a nonprofit focused on broadband deployment and adoption.

It's worth celebrating that more Californians are online. But it's alarming that outside of smartphones, the same old digital divide persists and keeps minorities, the poor and many seniors from reaping the riches of the information age. It's not for lack of trying. Companies such as Comcast, AT&T, Charter and Frontier now offer less expensive broadband access to eligible low-income households. State and federal government officials have been trying to expand broadband for years.

"We need to invest more funds in getting low income people, particularly school children, devices that work at home that are not smartphones," said Tamara Straus, a spokesperson with the California Emerging Technology Fund, which was established in 2006 by the state's Public Utility Commission and funded as a result of two telecom mergers. "It's really important for education and digital literacy. That's really the divide."

Sure, being connected via a smartphone is better than nothing. But there's more to being online than tapping out an email or surfing the web. Smartphones, even with all they do, are still limited devices.

It's hard to do homework on an iPhone, look at a spreadsheet or access electronic medical records. You can't apply to college on a Samsung Galaxy or use one to take an online class. Smartphone banking has a ways to go before it is easy and commonplace. And some data plans cap your use.

The result? In addition to the 13 percent of Californians who do not have access to broadband internet at home, another 14 percent are "underconnected" because they can only get online via their smartphones. That's about one-third of Californians with limited or no broadband access. (The Field Poll findings have a sampling error of +/-2.6 percentage points).

The digital divide reflects our socio-economic divisions. Talk about two Californias. Just 43 percent of Golden State residents with incomes less than $22,000 access the internet through a computer or laptop compared to 94 percent of those with incomes of $100,000 or more.

People with the least education and the lowest incomes, as well as Spanish-speaking Latinos, are more likely to be part of this digital underclass. For example, 63 percent of people without a high school degree are connected, up an astonishing 31 percentage points since 2014, but practically all of that gain has been from smartphone use. Likewise, 69 percent of Spanish-speaking Latinos are connected, up 23 percentage points, with 30 percent using smartphones only to get online. The digital divide still hits older Californians harder, too. They haven't seen the smartphone boost other groups have experienced. Just 56 percent of those 65 and older are connected, a 9 percentage point gain, and just 5 percentage points of that came from smartphone-only use.

The biggest thing preventing people from owning a computer and getting online is cost. Companies can do more to provide free or low-cost devices to customers, more Wi-Fi hot spots and more funds for broadband infrastructure.

But the digital divide should be a call to Silicon Valley technologists, who are working on the next generation of smartphones and apps: Make smartphones even more useful.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7SAMSUNG

COMING SOON: The Galaxy Note 7 will launch on Tuesday

Samsung's Galaxy S7 edge is already the best device of 2016 but it could be about to get a major rival.

The Korean tech firm is lifting the lid on its new Note 7 and, if the rumours are true, this phone could take the crown from its Galaxy sibling.

All will be revealed next Tuesday at Samsung's Unpacked event but here's why we think smartphone fans should be very excited.

1. IRIS SCANNING

Fingerprint scanners are so last year.

The new Note 7 is expected to launch with an iris scanner that takes a quick look at your eyes to unlock the phone.

This technology has already been used by Microsoft but this could be the first time it's been seen on an Android device.

However, one leak has suggested this won't be as good as it sounds as it may not work with glasses or under low light conditions.

But if it does instantly unlock the phone when you look at it, it will be an exciting new toy to play with.

Apple is also thought to planning a similar technology but it seems Samsung will beat them to a launch.

Samsung's S Pen has been around for a while and each year it gets better and better.

This mini digital pencil allows users to draw, make notes and interact with the content on the display.

The Note 7 is sure to include this in-built stylus and we've got a feeling it could be their best digital pen yet.

3. BIGGER SCREEN

The Note range usually squeezes into pockets with a bigger display than Samsung's other phones.

Like the older Note 5, we're expecting the Note 7 to feature a 5.7-inch display.

Rumours have also suggested the Note 7's screen will be curved, making its design similar to that of the S7 edge.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 has one of the best displays on the market so expect a similar eye-watering experience from the Note 7.

4. SAMSUNG'S BEST CAMERA

Samsung's Galaxy S7 is leading the photography field this year and the Note 7 could feature similar technology.

The S7 currently features a Dual Pixel 12 megapixel camera which has super fast autofocus and can record video in 4K.

There's no confirmation that the Note 7 will include the same camera but, with the S7 performing so well, it would make perfect sense.

5. A GLOBAL LAUNCH

Fans of the Note series we're left seriously disappointed last year after Samsung didn't launch its phablet across the world.

There's no word if the same will happen with the Note 7 but it looks like everyone will be able to own one.

Samsung is revealing the new phone across in New York, London and Rio next Tuesday so that would suggest a global launch is coming.

English bar blocks cell phones, tries to get patrons talking

LONDON (AP) - A new English cocktail bar offers something truly old-fashioned on its menu: the chance to talk to real people instead of staring down your cell phone.

The Gin Tub in Brighton has won rave reviews in its first week of business by installing a cell signal blocker and placing throwback rotary phones at its tables. They can be used to dial patrons at neighboring tables or the bar for another round.

The Gin Tub is reckoned to be the only British pub blocking cell phones by using a Faraday shield built into its ceiling, an exception in Britain's 2006 Wireless Telegraphy Act that otherwise outlaws the use of signal blockers.

Proprietor Steve Tyler says: "Mobile phones have killed pubs. When you go out socially, you don't need social media."

Samsung Gear S3 to be unveiled at IFA in September

The device would provide more options for customisation than its predecessor

Wearable devices are the latest sensation in the tech industry, which have also attracted the interest of tech giants such as Apple and Samsung with each company having its own line of smartwatches.

The latest comes from Samsung, which is all set to launch the latest addition to it's Gear Series of wearables at IFA, the world's second largest technology show which will take place from September 2-7, 2016.

Samsung to unveil smartphone 'Note 7' on August 2

The device's release date comes from SamMobile, which also falls in line with earlier rumours. The September launch also makes sense since Samsung also plans to unveil its flagship Note 7 smartphone on August 2.

As to the possible design, SamMobile claims the Gear S3 would feature the rotating bezel, which came in the last gen also implying the device would have a circular face rather than a square one. The bezel was used as a tool to scroll over menus in the last device.

Is Samsung Galaxy S7 Active really water-resistant?

The device might also provide more customisation options, if Samsung is willing to keep the wearable brand alive for the future.

The release of the new Gear S is something to be excited about as the device sits at the top of Android wearable and is a competitor to the AppleWatch.

iPhone 7 release date ‘confirmed’ by Apple leak – But will the world get iPhone 6SE instead?

Apple which is known for releasing its iPhone series in the month of September, will again release its iPhone 7 on the same month, that is according to mobile reporter Evan Blass. The reporter who has been pretty accurate about the past releases of the smartphone said that pre-orders for the phone are scheduled for 9 September.

German website Apfelpage however reported that iPhone 7 will not be launched at all this year. The site which said that its information comes from Chinese supply chain sources which have seen final retail packaging, claimed that new phones will be called the 'iPhone 6SE' and 'iPhone 6SE Plus'.

The website macrumours said that "multiple rumors suggest it (iPhone 7) will be a modest update that continues to use a design similar to the design of the iPhone 6s. It is said to have the same general shape as the iPhone 6s, but it may have a camera that protrudes less (though rumors currently disagree on this point). Antenna bands across the back of the device have been removed, but are expected to remain at the top, bottom, and sides of the iPhone. The front of the iPhone is also expected to see some changes with a longer earpiece cutout, a relocated ambient light sensor, and perhaps a flush touch-based home button."

Lenovo K5 Note final roundup: Everything you need to know about the upcoming premium smartphone

Lenovo has set up a strong foothold in the premium smartphone market in India, but so have other brands such as Xiaomi, LeEco and Meizu. In order to stay on the top, these brands have struck a price and specifications war and the end consumers are at the beneficial end of the bargain. Lenovo is now launching a new smartphone that can give it a boost in the competition as it brings several upgrades unseen in its older smartphones at an attractive price.

Lenovo K5 Note is all set to take on rivals such as Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2, Meizu M3 Note and others with a quite impressive addition. Details about the K5 Note, including its price in India, is unknown at the moment, but not everything is a mystery.

Lenovo will officially launch the K5 Note in India on Monday, August 1 at 3 p.m., revealing all the necessary details about the phone. The Chinese smartphone maker will be live-streaming the entire launch event for its fans around the country to watch. Until then, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming premium budget smartphone.

Design

Lenovo teased the design of the K5 Note in a brief teaser shared on YouTube and other social media channels. In that video, the company shows the symmetric design of the device and the premium metallic structure that will make it a true rival to the existing sub-Rs. 15,000 smartphones in India.

Lenovo K4 Note-successor was originally launched in China in January this year, but the suspenseful teaser by the company hints at a possible makeover from what we have seen before.

Display

Lenovo K5 Note is expected to feature a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display with ultra slim bezels, Gorilla Glass 3 protection. While the company hasn't spoken about the display of the device, this assumption is based on the K5 Note's original release in China. It is highly unlikely that the display will be changed in the Indian version of the K5 Note.

Camera

Once again, Lenovo hasn't revealed the camera configuration of the K5 Note for India, but its Chinese version featured a 13-megapixel ISOCELL camera with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and Full HD recording. The front camera will be fitted with a 8MP lens, good enough for decent selfies.

Processor, RAM and storage

Lenovo has already confirmed that the upcoming K5 Note will feature 4GB of RAM, even though the Chinese variant had 3GB RAM. It remains unclear if the new K5 Note will feature the same CPU and storage option like its Chinese counterpart. In case it does, then the handset will be powered by a 64-bit MediaTek Helio P10 octa core CPU clocking at 1.8GHz and 16GB expandable storage.

Battery

The original K5 Note sports a 3,500mAh battery. The upcoming K5 Note is likely to have the same unit, which the company claims can provide up to 27 hours of talk time in 3G.

Add-ons

Lenovo teased a new feature called Secure Zone of the India-based K5 Note on Saturday. This will allow users to save personal files in a private area within the phone. The handset is also expected to feature a fingerprint scanner, dual SIM support, 4G LTE support, VoLTE support, Dolby Atmos audio system and TheaterMax technology.

Price

The K5 Note was launched in China for ¥1099, which hints at an affordable price point in India as well. We are guessing the handset will be launched at Rs. 11,999, but it will definitely be under Rs. 15,000.

Microsoft's smartphone plans were a complete disaster, and this proves it

Microsoft has revealed yet more job cutsGETTY

Microsoft has revealed yet more job cuts across its mobile division

Microsoft has announced major job cuts as it looks to repair the fortunes of its struggling smartphone business.

The Windows 10 maker revealed that is will be cutting nearly three thousand jobs from its smartphone division following a long period of decline for its Windows Mobile devices.

The cuts raise major questions about Microsoft's future in the phone market, despite rumours it could be preparing a whole new family of devices for release later this year.

Windows Phone has struggled to gain market shareGETTY

Windows Phone has struggled to gain market share

The job losses are mainly coming from former employees of iconic smartphone brand Nokia, which was acquired by Microsoft for $7.2 billion back in April 2014.

Microsoft had already said it would be laying off 1,850 other workers back in May as it looked to streamline its many operations.

The cuts mean that the company has now let go 10 per cent of its total workforce in the past few years.

The news could spell the end for Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile platform, which has looked to spread the reach of the company's ubiquitous software on to smartphones.

However speculation in recent months has suggested Microsoft is readying the launch of a "Surface Phone" mobile device, with a release date mooted for next year.

This follows the success of the company's own-brand Surface book laptop and Surface Pro products, both of which have received impressive critical acclaim since release.

Could this be the Surface Phone? BAIDU - NOKIBAR

Could this be the Surface Phone?

The Surface Phone could even be a hybrid device, with leaked images suggesting it will have a keyboard cover that allows users to type, similar to Microsoft's Surface Pro devices.

Other rumours claim the smartphone was set to have a 5.7inch touchscreen with 2K resolution, powered by a Snapdragon 830 processor, and sporting a 20megapixel rear camera with a Carl Zeiss lens.

You can check out Express.co.uk's review of the Surface Book here.

The news will be a blow to Microsoft's ongoing campaign to get Windows 10 installed on one billion devices worldwide.

The company revealed earlier this month that it was set to miss its ambitious target of hitting this mark by the middle of 2018, despite an aggressive push to get customers to upgrade to Windows 10.

This includes cutting off the opportunity of upgrading for free, which expires in the UK tomorrow. From then, anyone looking to update to Windows 10 will need to pay £99 to do so.

Republic Wireless launches new smartphone portfolio today including Nexus 6P, Galaxy S7, Moto G4, and more

For years, Republic Wireless has offered inexpensive plans and interesting WiFi calling features, but the selection of phones was extremely limited. That changes today. After announcing a new GSM network partner and smartphone portfolio, both are live today. You can pick up devices like the Nexus 6P and Galaxy S7 for use on Republic Wireless right now.

Older Republic Wireless phones were Motorola devices with special firmware that flipped automatically between WiFi and cellular for calls and data. This led to delays in updates because new OS versions had to be modified with Republic code. Those low-level customizations are no longer needed, so you can get one of these devices from Republic Wireless (pricing looks similar to other retailers) or just bring your own unlocked phone.

New+Phones+are+Here

There are nine phones included in this first batch. Here's the full list (Republic offers financing too, but it's kind of expensive).

  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - $799
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 - $699
  • Samsung Galaxy J3 - $179
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 - $549
  • Nexus 6P by Huawei - $499
  • Nexus 5X by LG - $349
  • Moto X Pure Edition - $349
  • Moto G4 - $199
  • Moto G4 Plus - $299
  • All Republic plans come with unlimited calls and SMS, but you pay more for better (and more) mobile data. For $15 per month you get no mobile data. At $20 you get 1GB of LTE, $30 gets you 2GB, $45 if the 4GB tier, $60 is 6GB, and $90 equals 10GB of monthly data. Republic Wireless hasn't just come out and said its GSM partner is T-Mobile, but it's T-Mobile. If T-Mobile works well where you live, Republic will work well with these new phones. You can even get $100 off the Nexus 6P if you order soon (first 1000 only). That matches the sale going on around the web.

A solid design and decent display aren't all that DTEK50 has up its sleeve. This additional space is treated as internal storage and adopted by the Android OS. It will be powered by a 2,610 mAh battery and its OS is the Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

BlackBerry has launched its second Android smartphone DTEK50, which the struggling company touts as the most secure Android smartphone ever.

Smartphone-maker LeEco plans to expand offline retail presence

Chinese firm will start selling products through 2,000 outlets across six cities

    New Delhi, July 28:

Despite being one of the hot selling items online, Chinese smartphone-maker LeEco on Thursday said it would expand its offline stores to other major cities and strengthen its retail outlets. The company has been selling offline only in Delhi since the past month.

Since its entry into India in January, the company has sold over seven lakh units (online and offline), a top company official told BusinessLine.

So far, the company was mainly selling via online channels such as Flipkart, and its own portal, LeMall. Friday onward, LeEco said it would start selling its products through 2,000 offline stores in New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

"We will sell through over 2,000 outlets across six cities and the plan is to expand to over 65 cities through 6,000-8,000 outlets by this year-end. Through our offline stores, we will be retailing our Le 1s and Le 1s Eco and will gradually also introduce our second generation Superphones, Le 2 and Le Max2," Atul Jain, Chief Operating Officer, Smart Electronic Devices, LeEco India, said.

He said the company had sold around seven lakh smartphones till now, mostly online. But, after going in for retail stores, it expects around 25 per cent of its total sales from offline stores, he added.

"By next calendar year-end, we expect to sell 40-45 per cent of our sales from offline stores and, as we grow, we will expand to more tier-I, -II and -III cities and towns," Jain said.

He said the company had tied up with top retail chains such as Sangeetha and Poorvika in the South, and Shivalik in the North to sell its products. Some other distributors are AppsYouNeed, Pearl Infotech and PCH across cities, Jain said, adding that LeEco had hired over 433 promoters for its offline business.

    More service outlets

For servicing of its products, the company will set up more outlets in addition to the 555 outlets it has now, Jain said. The company also provides door-to-door pick and drop service for its high-end smartphone Le Max2.

It also has a complete ecosystem of entertainment with partnerships such as Eros Now, Hungama and YuppTV, in addition to 2,000 movie titles through Le Vidi, over 100 TV channels via Le Live, and 2.5 million music tracks under LeEco membership.

With the parent company acquiring US-based consumer electronics firm VIZIO for $2 billion, the synergy is likely to have a positive impact on the Indian market as well. Then company will be looking at using these synergies in the Indian market, said analysts.

Announced at the 'Z3nvolution' event at Computex 2016 in Taiwan, the device has a 5.7-inch Full HD (1920 by 1080) Super AMOLED display, a 6GB RAM with UFS 2.0 256GB storage and a 23MP camera featuring the latest Sony IMX318 image sensor.

ASUS is expected to introduce its new product range at Z3nvolution in India before September.

Smartphone sales drive Samsung Q2 profit

Seoul: Solid sales of its flagship smartphone and an aggressive cost-cutting drive saw Samsung Electronics on Thursday post a better-than-expected gain in net profit for the second quarter.

The giant South Korean conglomerate said its key mobile division enjoyed "substantial earnings improvement" in the April-June period led by expanded sales of its high-end Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge phones.

Industry trackers estimate that the world's largest smartphone maker has sold about 26 million units of the S7 since it hit stores in March ahead of launches by competitors, including arch-rival Apple.

The mobile division accounts for the lion's share of Samsung's business, but it has been increasingly squeezed by competition both from Apple's iPhone and by lower-end devices from Chinese rivals such as Huawei.

Samsung's overall net profit for the second quarter stood at 5.85 trillion won ($5.2 billion), up 1.7 percent from the previous year and slightly above analyst estimates.

    - Marketing costs down -

Operating profit was up nearly 18 percent at 8.1 trillion won, Samsung said in an earnings statement, reflecting a sizeable cut in mobile marketing costs -- partly due to the underwhelming performance of the iPhone.

The Samsung earnings came two days after Apple announced a 27 percent second quarter profit slump on a sharp drop in sales of its iconic handset.

Television and component sales were also strong in the April-June period, Samsung said, with increased profits among premium product ranges.

"Looking ahead to the second half of 2016, the company expects its solid performance to continue... mainly driven by earnings increase in the component business due to sales growth in high value-added products," the statement said.

It also flagged a likely rise in mobile division marketing costs with the launch of its latest outsized Galaxy Note smartphone next week.

The Note series has never had as much of a sales impact as the S-series smartphone, and there will be increased competition with a new iPhone set for release later in the year.

    - Currency concerns -

Greg Roh, an analyst at HMC Investment, said a steady strengthening of the South Korean currency could also eat into profit margins.

"It will be harder for Samsung in the third quarter because of the stronger won and an increase in marketing costs," Roh said.

"The key point will be whether components -- like semiconductors -- will be able to make up for the loss in profits from finished products," he added.

Sustained profit gains from the company's cheaper smartphones, such as the J series, also helped to boost Samsung's mobile earnings in the second quarter.

Operating profit at the mobile unit rose to 4.32 trillion won from 2.76 trillion won a year ago.

Operating income at the semiconductor unit was 2.64 trillion won, compared with 3.40 trillion won a year earlier, as weaker demand pressured component prices.

The chip unit had helped buttress Samsung's profit margins when the mobile business went into a protracted slump from late 2014.

The world's number-two chipmaker has dominated production of faster, larger-capacity chips using a technology called 3D NAND.

Samsung was the first to mass produce chips using the technology and is producing the high-margin chips -- used in mobile gadgets and hard drives for servers -- at its factories at home and in China.

7 Reasons Why Gionee Marathon M5 Plus Is the Only Smartphone You Need

Some of the biggest reasons to buy a new smartphone are performance, style, and battery life. Compared to the last few generations of devices, the current phones have improved immensely in this regard. However in a lot of phones, you'll probably get only two out of three of these.

But why settle for a phone that looks good but lasts a few hours or a phone that whizzes through apps but has you reaching for a charger with the entire day to go? If you're one of the many wishing for better battery along with modern day convenience and a smart set of features to go with it, the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus just might be what you're looking for.

Here are seven reasons why the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is the only smartphone you need:

    1) Big battery, bold looksAlthough the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus sports a colossal 5020mAh battery, it doesn't come at the cost of aesthetics. Sporting a slim 8.4mm metal frame, it looks every bit as good as it feels to use. It measures a mere 160.9x81.2x8.4mm and weighs just 210.8 grams. It's available in Polar Gold and Champagne Gold options.

    2) Pretty and powerfulGreat looks and solid build quality aside, the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus has top of the line specifications as well. There's 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (expandable to 128GB via microSD card) along with an octa-core CPU that ensures that even the most demanding apps and games run smoothly. As for the connectivity, the smartphone supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, and USB Type-C. It also has a fingerprint sensor for enhanced security.

    3) No more power banksMost phones these days come with a battery that's between 2000mAh and 3000mAh, and that's where the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus stands out. It's packed with a whopping 5020 mAh battery that lets you go on for days without charging. So if you're playing games or watching videos, rest assured there's more than enough power to see you through that and a whole lot more. If the benefits of a 5020mAh battery aren't obvious, the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus comes with a generous 21 hours of talk time and a standby time of up to 619 hours.

    4) Have complete control of your phoneWhile a 5020 mAh battery is great in itself, Gionee's Amigo OS goes a step further. With Amigo 3.1 you can tweak battery consumption to the minutest detail. These include controlling which apps run in the background via the Application Control List feature and Heartbeat Synchronisation Technology which lets you prioritises the time of network access of apps.

And if that's not enough, you can reduce battery consumption by 30 percent with the Amigo OS' Dark Theme function. This handy feature turns the UI to use a black background so your display uses less battery. What's more is Extreme Mode which takes the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus' battery life to another level, handy during emergencies. It's good enough to warrant it's own point. Which brings us to the next point.

    5) Get through emergencies with extreme easeAlthough a massive battery, quick charging, and a slew of optimisations are welcome, you may find yourself in situations such as travelling where you don't have access to a charger and your battery is running low. It's in these situations where Extreme Mode comes in handy. This mode only gives you access to basic features such as contacts, messages, calls, and messages. The end result is 30 hours of standby time on a mere 10 percent of battery.

    6) Never worry about overheatingThe Gionee Marathon M5 Plus sports dual charging chips. This divides the current passing through the phone equally. What this means is, you don't have to worry about your phone heating up while charging as you would with other models. Useful since Gionee bundles it with a 2 ampere charger that charges the M5 Plus completely in two hours flat.

    7) Go to the moviesThe Gionee Marathon M5 Plus isn't just big on battery, it's big on screen size too which makes it great for watching movies and videos. There's a six inch, full-HD AMOLED display with a high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and 178 degree wide viewing angle. With a 77.5 percent screen to body ratio it looks as good as the movies you're watching on it. And don't worry about the battery drain, the Marathon M5 Plus' screen is designed for low power consumption. Combine that with the big battery and you can have movie marathons no matter where you go.

Ready to bokeh? Xiaomi's newest smartphone is, thanks to a funky dual-lens camera

Dual cameras are certainly one of the biggest smartphone trends this year, with Huawei and LG already in on the game, and even Apple rumored to be following in the near future. However, it's Chinese brand Xiaomi that's next in line with a dual-lens cam, which is the standout feature on its new Redmi Pro smartphone.

The two lenses perform different tasks on the Redmi Pro. The top lens, which is a 13-megapixel Sony supplied IMX258 sensor, takes still images as usual, while a 5-megapixel Samsung lens underneath takes in depth of field information. What does this mean? The background in your pictures can be blurred out, to give that cool "bokeh" effect that's usually reserved for DSLR cameras with special lenses.

Related: Phones don't get much bigger than the Mi Max

Xiaomi has left the depth of field processing down to a dedicated ImagiQ image processor, and clever software lets you mess around with focal points on the picture, so you can get exactly the look you want after taking the shot. We've seen this technology before, most recently on the Huawei P9, and before that on ZTE and HTC phones. In addition to the rear cameras, the Redmi Pro has a wide-angle, 5-megapixel front camera.

The camera lenses are mounted inside a brushed aluminum body, with chamfered edges, and a 5.5-inch OLED screen on the front that's covered in 2.5D shaped glass. Xiaomi hasn't used OLED display technology on its phones before, but its recently released Mi Band 2 fitness wearable does use a tiny OLED screen. Xiaomi promises a very high contrast ratio, and vivid colors from its new display. Underneath the screen is a fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi is calling the Redmi Pro its most powerful entry into the Redmi range yet, with a monster MediaTek deca-core processor inside that's 30 percent more efficient than other similar chips. There's 4GB of RAM to help out, although some models come with 3GB or RAM and a choice of 32GB, 64GB, or a very generous 128GB of internal memory. If you choose the cheapest 32GB model, it has 3GB of RAM and a Helio X20 chip, while the other versions come with a Helio X25. The phone will take a second SIM card, or the slot can be used to add even more storage space, plus there's a 4050mAh battery and a USB Type-C charging connector.

There are three colors — gold, silver, or dark grey — and the Redmi Pro costs from around $225 to $300, depending on spec and storage. The release date has yet to be confirmed, but don't expect it to be available outside of China or Xiaomi's other markets when it does hit the shelves.

Huawei's global smartphone shipments jump 25% in first half

HONG KONG: China's Huawei Technologies, the world's third-largest smartphone vendor, said first-half global smartphone shipments jumped 25%, helped by rapid growth in traditionally high-end markets such as Europe.

Shenzhen-based Huawei, which competes with Samsung Electronics and Apple, shipped 60.5 million smartphones globally in the first half.

Huawei's consumer business group, which includes its smartphone division, booked global revenue of 77.4 billion yuan ($11.6 billion) for the first six months, up 41% from last year.

Huawei aims to surpass market leaders Samsung and Apple within five years to become the world's top smartphone vendor.

Industry watchers, however, are less optimistic. They said Huawei is facing stiffer competition from domestic rivals su ch as Xiaomi and Lenovo Group as cost-conscious consumers are looking for alternatives with similar features in an increasingly saturated global market.

Huawei's head of consumer business Richard Yu was, however, bullish about the firm's long-term prospects.

"There are only three major smartphone vendors in the world - Apple, Samsung and Huawei. It's consolidating...other vendors will die in the next three to five years," he told a news conference.

Research firm TrendForce last week cut its estimate for Huawei's annual smartphone shipments by 8.5% to 119 million units, citing worse-than-expected sales of Huawei's flagship phone.

"The sales of Huawei's flagship P9, which features a dual camera, may fall short of expectations as other Chinese brands release competitive products," said TrendForce analyst Avril Wu.

Huawei held 9 percent of the global smartphone market in the second quarter of this year, a distant third behind Samsung's 24.5% and Apple's 15% , according to TrendForce.

WATCH: Meet BlackBerry's new phone: the DTEK50

BlackBerry is releasing a new smartphone with an emphasis on security in a bid to revive its flagging fortunes.

The company announced Tuesday the launch of the DTEK50, its second device powered by Android and one it says is more secure than other Android-powered phones on the market.

"With an increase in cybercrime on smartphones, people need to recognize that the private details of their lives, where they live, their bank info, pictures of their kids, are at risk on their personal device," BlackBerry chief security officer David Kleidermacher said in a statement.

"You wouldn't leave the doors of your house unlocked at night. Having a smartphone that doesn't take your privacy seriously is the equivalent."

The phone has been designed to fend off cyberattacks with features such as built-in malware protection and encryption of all user information, BlackBerry (TSX:BB) said.

The phone is BlackBerry's thinnest and has an on-screen keyboard, not its traditi onal keyboard. It will retail for C$429 and is available for pre-order online.

BlackBerry has faced calls to stop making smartphones because of disappointing sales and instead focus solely on its growing software and security business.

Late last year the company released the Priv with much fanfare. While BlackBerry has not disclosed Priv phone sales, the company sold 500,000 smartphones in total, including the Priv, during its most recent quarter, according to results released last month. That's a drop of 100,000 over the previous quarter and 200,000 fewer than two quarters earlier.

BlackBerry also recently decided to stop making its Classic model, less than two years after that phone entered the market.

CEO John Chen has so far shown no inclination to get out of the hardware business, having promised earlier this year to release two mid-range, Android-powered phones before the company's fiscal year ends Feb. 28, 2017.

Gorilla Glass 5 To Make Smartphone Screen Stronger

Corning first created a glass cover for phones almost 10 years ago.

Most smartphone users drop their phones from between their waists and their shoulders. Gorilla Glass 5 can survive up to 80 % of the time when dropped from this height, says the company. In comparison, Gorilla Glass 4, which was announced back in 2014, could only protect your phone from a height of 1 meter.

Corning's release comes as consumers tend to be keeping their smartphones for longer periods of time before upgrading to the newest model, said William Stofega, an industry analyst at IDC. John Bayne, the Gorilla Glass vice-president, said the company conducted a worldwide survey and found that about 85% smartphone owners had dropped their phones at least once in the last 12 months.

In a recent announcement, Corning has revealed that it is launching the latest flagship version of its Gorilla Glass cover glass line for mobile devices -- Gorilla Glass 5. However, this will only be possible for drops that are no higher than shoulder height, otherwise, the results might not be impressive as you think. However, if there is a truly indestructible piece of glass that is touchscreen capable as well, phone accessory manufacturers that churn out protective cases might as well close the shutters to their shop and wind up their respective business interests. This thinner glass may not fare as well as the thicker glass. Manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Lenovo, Huawei, LG, HP, and Asus have all made devices using the glass, along with other unnamed device makers. "Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning's advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses".

Corning says that their new version of Gorilla Glass is four times better than what rival products can offer, and it will not reduce clarity of the screen, or its touch sensitivity either.

Mobile OS once considered dead comes back to life in Indian smartphone

Alternative mobile operating systems are struggling to survive while Android and iOS dominate, but an operating system called Sailfish -- which was on the brink of disappearing -- is back after a short absence.

Intex Technologies' Aqua Fish smartphone with Sailfish 2.0 started shipping in India on Monday. It's the first Sailfish handset to be sold by a device maker outside of Jolla, the developer of the OS, whose Jolla C handset is available to only to testers.

Aqua Fish is priced at ₹5,499 (US$81), and has specifications comparable to an entry-level Android phone. It has a 5-inch, 720p display, 16GB of storage and a 1.3GHz  quad-core processor. It has a 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera.

The OS is based on the Linux kernel and can run Android applications, which could make Aqua Fish attractive as a low-cost smartphone.

Smartphones with alternative OSes have a knack for doing well in India. Samsung's smartphones with Tizen OS did well, and the company intends to bring new smartphones with Tizen 3.0 to the market. Samsung has tipped Tizen 3.0 to be in smartphones by September this year.

On a global scale, it's tough going for alternative OSes. The Firefox OS has been discontinued, and Ubuntu is struggling. The biggest competitor to Android and iOS is Windows Mobile, which had a meager 0.7 percent market share in smartphones during the first quarter of 2016, while Android held a 84.1 percent share and iOS had a 14.8 percent share.

The future of Salifish was in doubt late last year after Finnish company Jolla ran out of cash and laid off a majority of its staff. In May it secured $12 million in funding, which helped the company get back on its feet. But Jolla's reputation has suffered -- it is still refunding Indiegogo backers that financed Jolla's Sailfish-based tablet, which was never released. Some users are still grumbling about receiving partial refunds or none at all.

There is a small, but committed developer base for Sailfish, whose future remains unclear. The Aqua Fish could help it get a bearing in smartphones, and analysts have said Sailfish can be adapted for markets like wearables and the internet of things. Jolla has not shared details about plans for Sailfish.

OLED to Become Leading Smartphone Display Technology in 2020, IHS Markit Says

LONDON (July 25, 2015) – Although liquid-crystal display (LCD) has dominated mobile phone displays for more than 15 years, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology is set to become the leading smartphone display technology in 2020, according to IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO), a world leader in critical information, analytics and solutions. AMOLED displays with a low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) backplane will account for more than one-third (36 percent) of all smartphone displays shipped in 2020, becoming the most-used display technology in smartphone displays, surpassing a-Si (amorphous silicon) thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD and LTPS TFT LCD displays.

"While OLED is currently more difficult to manufacture, uses more complicated materials and chemical processes, and requires a keen focus on yield-rate management, it is an increasingly attractive technology for smartphone brands," said David Hsieh, senior director, IHS Markit. "OLED displays are not only thinner and lighter than LCD displays, but they also boast better color performance and enable flexible display form factors that can lead to more innovative design."

Samsung Electronics has already adopted OLED displays in its smartphone models, and there is also increasing demand from Chinese Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Meizu and other smartphone brands. Apple is also now widely expected to use OLED displays in its upcoming iPhone models.

At one time, OLED displays were entirely glass-based and in terms of performance, there was little difference between LCD and OLED displays. Now, flexible OLED displays made from thinner and lighter plastic are enabled and have drawn Apple's attention. "Apple's upcoming adoption of OLED displays will be a milestone for OLED in the display industry," Hsieh said.

Samsung Display, LG Display, Sharp, JDI, BOE, Tianma, GVO, Truly, and CSOT are also starting to ramp up their AMOLED manufacturing capacities and devote more resources to technology development. Samsung Display's enormous sixth-generation A3 AMOLED fab, for example, will enable even more AMOLED displays to reach the market. Global AMOLED manufacturing capacity will increase from 5 million square meters in 2014 to 30 million square meters in 2020.

"Many display manufacturers were investing in LTPS LCD, thinking it would overtake a-Si technology," Hsieh said. "However, many of the fabs under construction, especially in China, have had to change their plans to add OLED evaporation and encapsulation tools, because OLED penetration has been more rapid than previously expected."

India's smartphone revolution: 35 factories, 37,000 jobs in 2 years

Overall mobile phone production was about 68 million in 2014, increased to 100 million in 2015 and 350-400 million in July 2016.

India has seen about 35 new smartphone factories in the past two years, with a production capacity of about 18 million devices a month, since the central government had announced a tax rationalisation for electronics products to boost local electronics manufacturing.

The new manufacturing units have generated employment for 37,000 people and led to fivefold increase in capacity.

According to an official in the electronics and information technology ministry, overall mobile phone production capacity was about 68 million units in 2014, 100 million in 2015 and 350-400 million till July this year.

With India becoming a global hub for mobile phone manufacturing, the government has set a target of 500 million devices a year by 2020, riding on an incentive policy and availability of good talent.

"Production capacity has reached 350-400 million in July 2016. The government has set up a task force with a vision to produce 500 million phones by 2019-20 and create five million jobs. The aim of the initiative is to export 120 million phones," Pankaj Mohindroo, Indian Cellular Association (ICA) founder and president, told Business Standard. He said by 2020, the industry could reach Rs 3 lakh crore.

"With the target, for which the task force is working and we have achieved initial success, manufacturing activities have gone up in the country," Mohindroo added.

The new units that have come up include that of Foxconn with five facilities, Micromax, Lava International, Intex Technologies, Videocon, Vivo Mobile, Celkon Mobiles and Flextronics.

Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said the mobile phone production in the country has doubled on the back of reforms announced in the 2016-17 Budget. He said due to the initiatives, especially duty rationalisation, there had been a remarkable acceleration in the field of electronics manufacturing.

To boost domestic manufacturing, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had proposed a hike in levies on components and peripherals like batteries and chargers.

However, it was later rationalised after the industry said the hike in levies will hurt manufacturers as some of these parts have to be imported.

The government had removed basic customs duty (10 per cent) and special additional duty (four per cent) proposed on charger, adaptor, batteries and wired headsets.

A ministry official said that apart from phones, the reforms were helping domestic manufacturers to get into other areas like medical devices, consumer electronics, broadband equipment and set-up boxes.

Japan police issue traffic citations to Pokemon Go players

Police are warning players of Pokemon Go to not play and drivePolice are warning players of Pokemon Go to not play and drive

SAGA (TR) – Following the release of the popular smartphone game Pokemon Go, law enforcement in two prefectures have issued their first citations to players for traffic violations, reports NHK (July 24).

On Saturday at 3:00 p.m., Okayama Prefectural Police cited a 34-year-old man for viewing his smartphone screen while driving his station wagon on National Highway 430 in Kurashiki City. The man, who was accused of violating the Road Traffic Law, told police that he was playing Pokemon Go.

On Sunday, police cited two female players, aged 30 and 22, for the same violation in Okayama City. On that same day, two men in their 20s were cited for playing the game while riding minibikes in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture.

Like in other countries, the game has taken Japan by storm since its release on Friday, with players seen staring at smartphone screens in parks and on streets nationwide. Police, however, are demanding that motorists not play and drive.

"Since it is very very dangerous to operate a car or motorcycle while using a smartphone due to the extreme risk of an accident, we unconditionally want them to stop," an officer is quoted.

8 things you need to know when buying a Chinese smartphone

In March of this year a list of the world's top phone vendors was published. Twelve names were on it, and of those a stunning eight were Chinese.

Far from the knock-off merchants they have so often been categorised as, companies such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and more have been almost unstoppable in their ascendance.

But what does this mean for consumers in the West? On the surface of it, not a great deal. These manufacturers have tended to focus almost exclusively on China and other emerging markets, particularly India.

For various reasons many of them have opted to avoid the West almost entirely, only dipping their toes in every now and then. A great deal of this has to do with patent law, which is a story for another day (preferably a long gloomy winter's eve). That means the handsets can be a little tricky to get hold of.

The opportunity does exist for those of you with a little gumption and knowledge to successfully snare yourself a super Chinese smartphone. In doing so you can get a cracking deal, with specs to make even the most hardened power hounds weep with envy, and often at a third of the price of the well known flagships.

The market is totally different however, and there are many pitfalls to avoid. Read on for eight top tips on buying handsets from abroad.

    1. Research your handset

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

This may seem like an obvious first step, but the reality is harder than you might think. To begin with there can often be a lack of reviews for many handsets, especially those from lesser known companies such as Doogee, Elephone and Cubot.

Set a budget for yourself, trawl the web and draw up a list of three or four phones that particularly appeal (for example the Xiaomi Mi5, the Elephone P9000 and the Meizu Pro 6).

It's worth noting that there's a particular love for phablets in China, so those with smaller hands may want to steer clear.

    2. 4G or no 4G?

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

Everyone wants superfast internet on their smartphone, so a key thing to check is whether the phones you're looking at support the correct LTE bands for your country.

Many Chinese handsets come without support for Band 20, which for example is used by O2 in the UK, and would mean no 3G or 4G internet when using such a phone on a network which relies on this band.

    3. Dodge update doldrums

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

The next thing to do is look a little further into the company behind your handset. Take Xiaomi for instance. Every phone from the firm comes running MIUI, a proprietary skin of Android, and does not run Google services.

Xiaomi regularly updates its software, bringing new versions of Android to customers at a relatively decent speed.

However, it's the exception rather than the rule. If you plan on keeping your handset for any length of time, try to ensure you pick a manufacturer with an established reputation for software update support, otherwise the first bug you find may continue indefinitely.

    4. The customer is always right

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

There's another major thing to bear in mind before buying a Chinese smartphone, after-sales support. If you would like to receive this, don't buy 'gray imports'.

With limited presence (and in some cases none) in the West, parts and expertise are scant should a repair be needed, so have a think before buying and certainly before dropping the phone you've chosen onto unforgiving cement.

This may change in the years to come as manufacturers continue to expand their global presence, but for the moment it can be a difficult choice to make.

    5. Pick a vendor

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

This is perhaps the most important step, as making the wrong choice can mean weeks, maybe months of disappointment and despair.

Different phone manufacturers depend on different sites. Meizu and Oppo phones can generally be purchased through Amazon, while Xiaomi devices are usually available from the likes of AliExpress and GearBest.

Where possible, try to get stock shipped from a warehouse relatively near you, for example from Europe if you're in the UK, and also make sure to choose a guaranteed delivery option.

Research each vendor before making a purchase, and pay close attention to user reviews. If several people have had a bad experience that should be a red flag.

    6. Free ROM-ing

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

Due to firewall restrictions in China, the vast majority of Chinese phones come without Google's suite of apps installed. They instead run a custom software package ('ROM') overlaid on top of the core Android platform.

That doesn't necessarily mean you'll be in passion of a dud, as you can get Google's offerings with an international ROM with support for English and Google Play.

Many vendors will give the option to ship with an international ROM, but beware of this as devices bought this way may come preloaded with malware.

Choose a handset with an unlockable bootloader, and preferably with a microSD slot too, and check that an international ROM is available. You can then manually flash the ROM to the phone, minus any potentially nasty malware or unnecessary additional applications.

    7. Customs charge

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

An important point when purchasing any phone from abroad is; be aware of customs. Having a device shipped from the same country will help to avoid this situation, but it isn't always an option.

Often when shipping from China, not only will the device in question take several weeks to arrive, but when it does an extra charge has sometimes been applied, proportional to the cost of the device, potentially up to 20%.

Take care, and definitely factor in this potential extra expense when having products delivered, as otherwise cheap phones can skyrocket in price when extra hurdles are applied, thus negating any cost advantage.

    8. Setting up

8 tips on buying Chinese phones

So you've done it! Every hurdle has been cleared, except making the phone usable. On the setup screen, change the language to English (or your lingo of choice).

This daunting step completed, there remains the issue of installing the Google Play store should it not be present - and should it be possible. On Xiaomi devices this can be accomplished by downloading an app from the Xiaomi store, on others it can require full on flashing.

    Round-up

Buying phones from far-flung locales can be a highly rewarding process. If done correctly, you can end up with a powerful, beautiful device with an impressively low price point.

If anything goes wrong however, it can mean that your lovely slice of eastern delight ends up a very decorative paperweight.

Two tenets above all hold true: exercise whatever amount of common sense you may possess judiciously, and become the forum lurker you were born to be, as there is no better source of information than someone who has already made a purchase.
