Corning first created a glass cover for phones almost 10 years ago.
Most smartphone users drop their phones from between their waists and their shoulders. Gorilla Glass 5 can survive up to 80 % of the time when dropped from this height, says the company. In comparison, Gorilla Glass 4, which was announced back in 2014, could only protect your phone from a height of 1 meter.
Corning's release comes as consumers tend to be keeping their smartphones for longer periods of time before upgrading to the newest model, said William Stofega, an industry analyst at IDC. The next generation of Gorilla Glass is even better, with clearer optical properties, better scratch-proofing and the ability to resist a drop from 1.6 metres.

In a recent announcement, Corning has revealed that it is launching the latest flagship version of its Gorilla Glass cover glass line for mobile devices -- Gorilla Glass 5. However, this will only be possible for drops that are no higher than shoulder height, otherwise, the results might not be impressive as you think. However, if there is a truly indestructible piece of glass that is touchscreen capable as well, phone accessory manufacturers that churn out protective cases might as well close the shutters to their shop and wind up their respective business interests. This thinner glass may not fare as well as the thicker glass. Manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Lenovo, Huawei, LG, HP, and Asus have all made devices using the glass, along with other unnamed device makers. "Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning's advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses".
Corning says that their new version of Gorilla Glass is four times better than what rival products can offer, and it will not reduce clarity of the screen, or its touch sensitivity either.
