CNBC reviews the $1,150 new iPhone X — the best smartphone you can buy

If you're like me and you want the best smartphone on the market, then yes, the iPhone X is the phone you should buy. If you find yourself on your phone more than you do on your computer, constantly staring down at it, then why not get the best one there is?

The starting model is priced at $999 and includes 64GB of storage. If you plan to download lots of movies and games, then splurge for the $1,150 model with 256GB of storage. You'll want that extra space.

If you don't really care about phones or about having the latest and greatest, then there's really no need to buy an iPhone X. Save some dough.

The iPhone 7 is a good option since it's the cheapest fully loaded iPhone out there with a great camera and solid processor. Or you can even get the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, the latter of which I also recently purchased. I don't even regret that — it's just the second-best iPhone.

You'll save hundreds of bucks going with those phones, but you'll lose the design and the screen on the iPhone X, which I think really make the experience.

Don't care about the iPhone at all? Get a Galaxy Note 8. You'll get wireless charging, a great display, a solid camera and more.

The iPhone X is the best iPhone Apple has ever made — as it should be. It's not for everyone, just the folks who really want the latest and greatest and who spend enough time on their phones where $1,000 is worth the price. If you're on the fence, take a moment to check one out the next time you're near an Apple Store. I think you'll like it.

Nokia 2 is an entry-level smartphone with a serious battery

Thus far, the return of Nokia has given us quite a few different handsets. From a re-imagining of perhaps the most famous basic phone ever to the much more high-end Nokia 8, the phones that HMD Global has been pushing out the door have covered a fairly broad range in terms of power. There have even been a few mid-range smartphones for those shopping on a budget, but today we're seeing the introduction of a new entry-level phone in the Nokia 2.

There definitely isn't much to get excited about from a hardware perspective in the Nokia 2, aside from one major feature: its battery life. The Nokia 2 is built around a beefy 4100 mAh battery, which HMD Global says is good for two days of use on a single charge. It isn't hard to believe those claims when you take a look at the hardware that battery is powering.

The Nokia 2's display, for instance, is a 5-inch LTPS LCD screen outputting at just 720p. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 running the show, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, and 1GB of RAM, we certainly aren't looking at any high-powered hardware. In fact, the Nokia 2 probably isn't going to appeal to most people, but it should serve as a good first smartphone for someone who's just getting started.

With that kind of hardware under the hood, it's easy to see why the battery lasts so long. Durability is also one HMD's key talking points with the Nokia 2, as the display has been put behind a sheet of Gorilla Glass 3 and the phone itself outfitted with an aluminum frame and a polycarbonate shell. The phone will be running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, and though HMD seems to suggest that the Nokia 2 may one day get Android 8.0 Oreo, it doesn't delve into a specific timeline.

Like I previously said, most people probably won't give the Nokia 2 much consideration thanks to its entry-level hardware, but for the €99 HMD is charging for this device, you could certainly do a lot worse. HMD doesn't give an actual release date for the Nokia 2, but considering the phone is being advertised on Nokia's website, we probably aren't that far out from launch.

    3. Top tips for finding the best deal

    Compare deals

One of the benefits of picking your phone tariff through Carphone Warehouse rather than directly from your current network is that they include the best tariffs from each of the top networks, so you can easily see what you can get from each operator for the same budget.

They also offer cheaper upfront costs than the networks do, meaning you're getting exactly the same service, for slightly less.

With a business model built on comparison, naturally Carphone Warehouse also have a Price Promise. This means that if you find a better upgrade, pay monthly or pay monthly SIM only deal on any smart phone at either O2, EE or Vodafone, they will match it and also pay your first month's line rental.

    Upgrade your old phone

Get the same deal as other networks offer - but for less money

No matter where you bought your last phone from, Carphone Warehouse will let you upgrade your phone with them for free.

You'll keep all the benefits of your network (for example o2 Priority, free BT Sport and Apple music on EE and inclusive roaming or Spotify on Vodafone), plus your usual phone number, but will get to pick your new handset and tariff from Carphone Warehouse's array of deals - and everything is covered by their price promise, as per usual.

    Trade-in your old device

On the hunt for a new phone but still got an old one in decent nick? Carphone Warehouse will give you money off your next device when you trade-in your old one,

Once you've filled in your details online, they will send you a free, secure and padded postage pack for you to send your device to them in.

Check and see how much you can get for your old phone on their website here.

    Consider going SIM only

    SIM only is considerably cheaper

The single biggest cost of owning a phone is paying for the handset, so if you already have one that you're happy with, you can save huge amounts of money by going SIM only - a.k.a, only paying for what you actually use.

    Use a cash back site

If you order your items through a cash back website like TopCashback or Quidco (they're free to join), you can earn money back on your order.

    4. How much is delivery?

Carphone Warehouse deliver to most UK addresses for free, including nominated day and weekend delivery service. To certain remote locations, delivery costs £10.

When looking at your desired device on their website, each product will tell you by what time you need to order by to get it tomorrow - usually around 9pm.

Apple Reportedly Fired IPhone X Engineer For Letting Daughter Film His IPhone X Before Release

Brooke Amelia Peterson is a relatively unpopular YouTube vlogger, of whom nobody even knew about. All that was going to change when she decided to post her vlog that included her visit to the new Apple Campus earlier this week.

The vlogger wasn't aware of the strict 'no-filming of unreleased products' policy at the campus. This rule is a very strict one and is implemented in a lot of different workplaces, so even if the daughter knew about it, she must have thought that her filming iPhone X was an innocent thing.

Peterson's vlog went viral on YouTube and news websites didn't take long before catching the wind of it, and posting it on their websites. Peterson published another video recently in which she told that Apple fired her dad for her video that she published earlier this week.

The YouTuber explained that it was an innocent thing and that she didn't do it for any likes or popularity. She told that Apple contacted her to take the video down, which she did, according to her.

But of course, screen recording is no surprise in today's world, her video was recorded and posted by a dozen other video channels. The video showed her dad using the Apple Pay application to scan the QR code on a payment slip to pay for the lunch.

Then the YouTuber showed a few of the most basic navigational features of the iPhone X. She also opened the Calendar, Notes, and the Camera application on the smartphone and filmed it.

iPhone X: When, where, and how to preorder Apple’s latest smartphone

This article was updated on Friday, October 27 at 4:25 p.m. Pacific with up-to-date shipment and delivery info.

It's time: The iPhone X pre-order began Friday, October 27 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific/3:01 a.m. Eastern. With an edge-to-edge OLED display, front-facing camera with brand new Face ID technology, and wireless charging, this is arguably Apple's most groundbreaking iPhone in years.

We've had a couple of months to drink in the details since it was announced back in September, and now it's time to get your own. Apple's online store may seem like the most obvious choice, but you can also get it from the Apple Store app for iOS with Apple Pay, which has worked very smoothly for us in the past—in fact, it's often even more efficient.

Besides Apple, the four major cell carriers are also eager to help their customers upgrade or switch to a brand-new iPhone—especially if it means renewing a contract, extending an installment plan, or signing up new customers.

Speaking of installment plans, the process will be a little different for those of you participating in Apple's iPhone Upgrade Plan, which we'll cover below.

Read on for more iPhone X buying info. Looking for details on the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus? They've been on sale since the end of September—head on down to your local Apple store or pick one up online, and check out our full iPhone 8 review for more info.

Pre-order the iPhone X: How much does it cost?

The iPhone X comes in two models and starts at $699.

If you want AppleCare+, that will set you back an additional $199—which is a price increase compared to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and all older models. The iPhone X comes in silver and space gray.

Pre-order the iPhone X: Apple store

The easiest way to pre-order is through the Apple store online or via the Apple Store app. The pre-order period started just past the stroke of midnight on Friday, October 27 (12:01 a.m. Pacific/3:01 a.m. Eastern). Once you've reached the online store, select your preferred color, capacity, and carrier, and keep your fingers crossed for a quick ship time.

To make checkout even speedier, consider selecting a "favorite" iPhone ahead of time. Go to the online Apple store's iPhone X shopping page; select your carrier, finish, and capacity; select your payment plan (either via monthly payments through your carrier or the iPhone Upgrade Program, or in full up front); and then add AppleCare+ (if you want it!). Once you've gone through all of these steps, you have the option to "favorite" this device setup—just select the little heart icon next to the device availability button (or tap the heart in the upper left corner if you're using the Apple Store app on your iPhone).

Then, when you're ready to buy, log back in to the Apple store online, go over to your shopping cart (the bag icon in the top right corner), and click on Favorites to select that model for checkout. In the Apple Store app, tap Account, then My Favorites. You might want mark a backup favorite as well, just in case your first choice has too long of a ship date.

Another thing to do ahead of placing your order: check your account status with your carrier to make sure you don't run into any unexpected problems. If your carrier is AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, you can check your upgrade eligibility directly on Apple's website. You can also enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program online. If you're a T-Mobile customer, you'll have to pay in full to place an order through Apple, and check your account status with T-Mobile ahead of time. If you want to participate in the iPhone Upgrade Program, T-Mobile customers will have to go to an Apple retail store (sorry, Apple Town Square) in person.

Note: For the initial batch of pre-orders, Apple isn't selling any SIM-free unlocked phones—you have to select one of the four main carriers.

    Apple store ship dates

As of Friday, October 27, Apple is quoting a 5 to 6 week ship date across all iPhone X models and carriers. We'll update this section daily:

    AT&T:

  • 64GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks (approx. December 8 through 15)
  • 256GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 64GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 256GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • Sprint:

  • 64GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks (approx. December 8 through 15)
  • 256GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 64GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 256GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • T-Mobile:

  • 64GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks (approx. December 8 through 15)
  • 256GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 64GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 256GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • Verizon:

  • 64GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks (approx. December 8 through 15)
  • 256GB, Silver: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 64GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • 256GB, Space Gray: 5 to 6 weeks
  • Pre-order the iPhone X: iPhone Upgrade Plan

Apple is continuing its iPhone Upgrade Program for the iPhone X. This program allows you to upgrade to a new iPhone every year by paying monthly installments directly to Apple via a third-party loan. Here's the cost breakdown:

  • 64GB: $49.91 per month
  • 256GB: $56.16 per month
  • The cost of the iPhone Upgrade Program includes AppleCare+, which would be an additional charge of $199 if you were to pay for the phone in full up front.

Apple has a quick pre-approval process through its loan partner Citizens One, which is required for both existing and new Upgrade Program participants—the Apple store app will walk you through the process during checkout, which involves selecting your preferred iPhone, confirming your carrier, and providing your Social Security number and date of birth for a credit check. Once approved, you'll have three days to complete your purchase—otherwise, you'll have to get pre-approved again.

If you're trading your device in and swapping it out for an iPhone X, your first loan will close out and Citizens One will start you on a new 24-month loan with adjusted (read: more costly) monthly payments, since the iPhone X is more expensive than previous versions of the iPhone. Apple will also give you the option to return your old iPhone to an Apple retail store, or mail it back.

For more info, see our iPhone Upgrade Program FAQ.

    Pre-order the iPhone X: AT&T

If you're an AT&T customer (or would like to become one), you can also pre-order your new iPhone X on AT&T's website, where you can check your upgrade eligibility and select one of their Next plans.

AT&T Next lets you get a new iPhone 8 for $0 down as long as you make monthly payments—$33.34 per month for the 64GB version, or $38.34 per month for the 256GB version—spread out over 30 months (with a 24-month option available). You can upgrade to a new iPhone once 80 percent of the iPhone's sales price is paid off (or sooner with a down payment). The 24-month option is called AT&T Next Every Year, which has larger monthly payments (starting at $41.63 per month) but you can upgrade after a year—or once you've paid off half of the price of your device—hence the name.

AT&T is quoting a ship date of December 4 through 18 as of this writing for all colors and capacities, however, they warn that this ship date is subject to change.

    Pre-order the iPhone X: Verizon

Verizon also offers an online pre-order. This year, if you trade in a phone (Verizon's taking phones as old as the iPhone 5), you can save up to $300 off of your iPhone X via statement credits. Your trade-in device must be in good working and cosmetic condition, of course. Verizon is also offering the option to pay for the phone in full or through a 24-month installment plan, which costs $41.66 per month for the 64GB version and $47.91 per month for the 256GB version.

If you're ordering directly from Verizon, the ship date varies per color and capacity:

  • 64GB, Silver: Delivery by December 1
  • 256GB, Silver: Delivery by December 1
  • 64GB, Space Gray: Delivery by December 1
  • 256GB, Space Gray: Delivery by December 13
  • Pre-order the iPhone X: Sprint

Sprint's pre-order option may be offering some of the lowest prices around. New and current Sprint customers can get the iPhone X for $22.22 per month over 18 months if you bring in an eligible device to trade in with Sprint Flex. For iPhone users, that means an iPhone 6/6 Plus, iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, or an iPhone 8/8 Plus. This could be a savings of up to $350. Don't have a device to trade in? No problem—your monthly payments will just be a little higher at $41.67 per month over 18 months.

If you get the 64GB version, you don't have to make a downpayment; if you get the 256GB version, it's $150 up front. Both capacities have the same montly payment amounts. All monthly payment-based iPhone plans come with Sprint's iPhone Forever program, which lets you trade in your phone every 12 months. Sprint's iPhone Forever program is technically a 22-month lease.

Sprint is quoting a delivery date of November 14 as of this writing for all colors and capacities

    Pre-order the iPhone X: T-Mobile

T-Mobile customers will likely find it easiest to pre-order an iPhone X directly from the carrier, as it's the only way to get access to a standard installment plan for payment. If you have an iPhone 6 or newer (minus the iPhone SE) to trade in, T-Mobile will knock $300 off the price of the iPhone X via 24 monthly bill credits.

To get this deal, you'll have to sign up for one of T-Mobile's two installment plans: The Equipment Installment Plan, which asks for a down payment and then monthly payments for 24 months; and Jump! On Demand, which is T-Mobile's leasing option that lets you switch to a new phone every year. For current T-Mobile customers on the Equipment Installment Plan, you have to pay off the remaining balance on your existing device before adding the iPhone X to your line.

If you're ordering directly from T-Mobile, the ship date varies per color and capacity:

  • 64GB, Silver: Delivery between November 3 and November 10
  • 256GB, Silver: Delivery between November 10 and December 1
  • 64GB, Space Gray: Delivery between November 10 and December 1
  • 256GB, Space Gray: Delivery between November 10 and December 1
  • Pre-order the iPhone X: Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile

These small-fry American carriers—both owned by Sprint—don't have an open iPhone X pre-order portal yet, but they will soon!

Virgin Mobile will start taking pre-orders on Friday, November 3—the day the iPhone X arrives in Apple stores!—and will begin shipping on November 10.

Boost Mobile will start taking pre-orders on November 10. No word on a shipment timeline yet.

Pre-order the iPhone X: Best Buy

Best Buy has the worst iPhone X prices around if you want to buy the device up front—they're asking for $100 more than Apple's suggested price. That's $1099 for the 64GB model and $1249 for the 256GB model. What gives, Best Buy? However, you can get monthly payment options through your carrier via Best Buy, which doesn't have a markup.

So, if Best Buy is offering either the same monthly payment price as your carrier or something that's more expensive than any other store, why shop at Best Buy to begin with? According to a statement reported by CNET, Best Buy claims that "flexibility has a cost" and the big-box retailer may be banking on better shipment dates in the future. As of October 27, that's not the case—Best Buy's promised delivery times are not too great:

  • 64GB, Silver: Ships by November 10
  • 256GB, Silver: Ships by November 15
  • 64GB, Space Gray: Ships by December 15
  • 256GB, Space Gray: Ships by December 15

OnePlus 5T price, specs and release date revealed as 'pre-order' site for the new phone appears in China

Over the last week, rumours have been circulating of a brand new phone from Chinese manufacturer OnePlus.

The OnePlus 5T is rumoured to have an edge-to-edge screen similar to the upcoming iPhone X - as well as the latest specs and a dual lens camera - but cost roughly half the price.

Now, a website in China appears to have revealed everything about the new gadget on an official-looking pre-order page.

It clearly shows the new phone along with a list of specifications and even an estimated delivery date.

Read More Screengrab of the website offering the OnePlus 5T for pre-order (Image: Mirror Tech)

According to the site, the phone will pack the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and boast a 6-inch QHD screen with the same 18:9 aspect ratio Apple and Google offer on the iPhone X and the Pixel 2 XL.

The price is listed as $549 - around £417 - which is vastly cheaper than the aforementioned smartphones.

The retailer adds that the estimated delivery date is the end of November 2017.

Read More The leaked image of the rumoured OnePlus 5T

According to the site, the phone will be available with a choice of 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of storage and a rear-facing dual camera made up of a 20MP and 16MP sensors.

As with all leaks, it's wise to take it with a pinch of salt - although this does seem fairly accurate with estimations.

A mid-tier refresh wouldn't be a huge surprise as OnePlus previously released the OnePlus 3T to bridge the gap between the OnePlus 3 and the current OnePlus 5 flagship phone .

Mirror Tech has contacted OnePlus for a comment on the rumours and we will update this article as and when we hear back.

Sony's new smartphones Xperia R1 Plus and R1 to be locally manufactured in India, Co partners with Foxconn

Sony's new smartphones Xperia R1 Plus and R1 to be locally manufactured in India, Co partners with Foxconn NEW DELHI: Sony India appears to be attempting a re-entry into the cluttered yet competitive smartphone market in India on the back of locally made devices in partnership with the largest contract manufacturer in the world.

The Japanese electronics major will begin making two models in the Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 range – one of the fastest growing segments in the industry – in India from November through Foxconn's India unit Rising Star Mobility, which has five plants in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

Analysts say that Make in India alone won't be enough for Sony to make a mark in the market where Chinese players have a majority share.

"Customer interest is exceedingly high in the smartphone category in India, particularly the mid-segment and we would like to leverage this demand with the launch of our mid-segment smartphones, exclusively for India," said Kenichiro Hibi, managing director, Sony India.

"Sony India has always been committed to India market and supports the country's direction such as Digital India and Make in India initiatives," he added. The company which had a far larger presence and competitive phones a couple of years ago, has almost vanished from the frontlines and has ceded share to players like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Lenovo and others, that make up the top ten, with far fewer launches than before. In August last year, the company said that its focus on phones would be lesser as its revenue from the segment as contribution to the overall company revenue, will drop by half in the fiscal ended March 2017, versus the year before. Only a handful of Sony's Xperia models compete in the Indian market, most of which are in the premium segment.

Analysts said that for companies like Sony and LG, which have much larger presence in the consumer electronics segments such as televisions, audio systems and refrigerators, the way to claw back market share would be much tougher.

"Partnering with Foxconn could be a good comeback strategy for Sony in India, however, Make in India itself won't suffice," said Prabhu Ram, head-industry intelligence group at Cybermedia Research.

"Sony would need to work on new product IPs that would allow it to distinguish itself from the hyper-competitive market. They would need to move beyond the music and sound era because in the 4G era, they would need to ramp up their offerings in the burgeoning media and entertainment domain," he added.

2018 Zero Motorcycles: release date, prices, specs, and features

As the automotive industry slowly turns its focus to battery-electric vehicles, it's logical to think e-powered transportation is a new concept. Amid the glut of startups hand-building electric motorcycle prototypes and international brands looking ahead two to four years for their first battery-powered models, it's easy to miss Zero Motorcycles, founded by a former NASA engineer, which has been in business since 2006.

And that's a shame. Zero makes killer e-cycles.

    What's new for 2018

The six 2018 Zero Motorcycles models bring significant changes to the lineup. The new bikes accelerate quicker, go further on a charge, and charge faster than last year's models. Owners can update 2018 Zero motorcycle firmware conveniently, quickly, and easily with a new smartphone app. The 2018 bikes even have a new color palette.

The six 2018 Zero bikes include two street bikes, two dual sport models, a mo tocross bike, and a supermoto. All Zeros are available with different battery sizes for increased horsepower and range. The modular batteries can be swapped out quickly and even charged on the bike with a standard charger to increase usable range even further.

A new 6kW Charging Tank accessory can charge the street and dual sport Zeros six times faster than plugging into a conventional 110V outlet when plugged into a J1772 fast charging station. With this setup, the Zeros can add up to 103 miles range per each hour of charging time.

New battery chemistry in the two new Zero lithium-ion batteries increases the range up to 223 miles per charge, depending on the battery. Note that range figures are based on city driving because driving at highway speeds depletes the batteries at a greater rate per mile. Owners can use the Zero smartphone app, available for iOS and Android to configure performance settings, view liv e performance and battery data, check out trip and energy use and cost statistics, and update the bike's firmware.

Without reducing top speed, the lightweight and compact ZF7.2 battery power pack produces 11 percent greater torque with higher maximum revolutions and new gearing, resulting in faster acceleration and standing start performance. Zero also tuned the base street and dual sport bikes for up to 30 percent more power and torque for increased highway speed acceleration.

The last major change for the 2018 Zero motorcycles is new colors and graphics. The look is a matter of taste, but in our view, the new Zeros look sharper and more badass than the earlier models.

2018 Zero Motorcycle engines and batteries

Zero motorcycles are set up with one of two Z-Force motors. The motors are sealed and air-cooled, have only one moving part, and require no routine maintenance.

TheZ-Force ZF75-5 with the ZF 7.2kWh battery produces up to 34 horsepower and 78 pound-feet of torque. The larger capacity Z-Force ZF75-7R paired with a ZF 14.4kWh battery makes 70 hp and 116 lb-ft of torque. Those two motor and battery combinations differentiate the two street bikes and two dual sport rides. A third combination, the ZF75-5 motor with the ZF 3.6kWh battery, is used on the motocross and supermoto bikes to crank out 27 hp and 78 lb-ft of torque.

How to choose a 2018 Zero Motorcycle

The six 2018 Zero Motorcycles include two for street riding only, two dual sport bikes, one for off-road motocross, and a street legal supermoto model.

The Zero S ($11,000 starting price) and SR ($16,500 starting price) street bikes are the same vehicles with different electric motors and base batteries. The $11,000 base price Zero DS and $16,500 DSR dual sport motorcycles share the same frame and all other components except the motor and base battery. Zero's FX motocross bike and FXS supermoto both have the same $8,500 starting price, motor, and base battery, but differ in other details appropriate to their different uses.

    2018 Zero Street Motorcycles

The lighter of the two Zero strictly street bikes, the 2018 Zero S uses the Z-Force 75-5 motor and is equipped with a 7.2kWh battery. If you stick with the standard configuration, the S has a city driving range of 89 miles. If you only drove on the highway at 70 mph, starting with a fully charged battery the range is cut r oughly in half to 45 miles. Light at 313 pounds for easy commuting and moving around city and town, the S maxes out at 91 mph, but is rated at 80 mph for sustained top speed — and at that rate you can expect the range to drop drastically.

    Story Continues

You can't change the Zero S motor, but you can configure it with a 13kWh battery pack for an additional $3,000 to boost the city range to 161 miles, highway driving range to 81 miles, and sustained and maximum top speeds of 85mph and 96 mph. If you still want more range, a $2,900 dealer-installed Power Tank adds 3.6kWH of power for a total of 16.6kWh, which doesn't change the top speed but boosts the range to 206 miles in city driving and a more comfortable 103 miles on the highway.

Charging the Zero S to 100 percent plugged into a 110/220V outlet takes 5.2 hours with the standard 7.2kWh battery, 8.9 hours with the 13kWh battery, and 11.3 hours with the 13kWh battery and the 3.6kWh power tank. Note that charging to 95 percent power, a more realistic level, takes about a half hour less in each case. Using conventional outlet charging could work if you plug in the bike at home or work every day.

If you're going to travel longer distances on a regular basis, Zero has accessory chargers that can speed charging times. For the fastest charge possible, the $2,300 optional Charge Tank that enables plugging into J1772 Fast Charging stations reduces 100% charging times to 1.5 hours with the 7.2kWh battery and 2.3 hours with the 13kWh power pack. Note that you cannot have both the Power Tan k and the Charge Tank, so you'll have to choose between maximum range and fastest charging time.

Like all 2018 Zero Motorcycles models, the Zero S has a clutchless direct drive transmission, Showa front and rear suspension, and Bosch Gen 9 ABS brakes. The S model has Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires on its 17-inch front and rear wheels. Like the SR, the Zero S is the only motorcycle in the 20 18 line up with a street front fender; the other models have higher front fenders in keeping with their greater likelihood of using the full suspension travel riding off-road.

The 2018 Zero SR is the same motorcycle as the Zero S, with two important exceptions. The SR uses the higher revving, higher amperage Z-Force 75-7R motor and has a 14.4kWh battery. This powertrain combination has a 179-mile city driving range, 90-mile highway range, a sustained top speed of 95mph and a maximum 102mph speed. The SR is about 100 pounds heavier than the S model due to the larger standard battery.

Charging the Zero SR to 100 percent takes 9.8 hours plugged into a conventional outlet, or 2.5 hours if you spring for the $2,300 optional Charging Tank. Once again you could opt to maximize the Zero SR's range with a $2,900 Power Tank with another 3.6kWh power. With the Power Tank city driving range jumps to 223 miles and you can go up to 112 miles on the highway — as long as you keep it at 70 or slower.

2018 Zero Motorcycle Dual Sport Bikes

The Zero DS dual sport model has the same $11,000 starting price and the same battery and charger upgrade options as the Zero S. The DSR shares the $16,500 starting price of the Zero SR, too. Except for longer suspension travel front and rear and different wheels and tires, the DS and DSR share the same components as the Zero S and SR, including Showa suspension and Bosch Gen 9 ABS brakes. The dual sport Zero models have 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels with dirt-ready tires.

The Zero DS and DSR have 33.2-inch seat heights — about 1.4 inches higher than the street bikes — and weigh 4 to 5 pounds more at 317 pounds DS and 419 pounds for the DSR. Top speeds for the dual sport bikes are the same as identically powered street versions, although driving ranges drop a bit, likely due to the DS and DSR's tires. With their standard battery packs , the DS range is rated at 92 miles in the city and 39 miles highway. The DSR comes in at 163 miles in the city and 78 miles on the highway.

So bottom line, the Zero S, SR, DS, and DSR are the same motorcycle with different combinations of motors, batteries, suspension travel, wheel sizes, and tires. Since you can add batteries (with subsequent big prices boosts to the Zero S and DS prices), the most significant first question is will you ride on the street only or on and off the road. Then just dial in your power and speed preferences and make your pick.

    Model Zero S Zero SR Zero DS Zero DSR Starting price $11,000 $16,500 $11,000 $16,500 Motor type Z-Force 75-5 Z-Force 75-7R Z-Force 75-5 Z-Force 75-7R Standard max capacity battery 7.2kWh 14.4kWh 7.2kWh 14.4kWh Max horsepower 34 hp 70 hp 34 hp 70 hp Max torque (lb-ft) 78 lb-ft 116 lb-ft 78 lb-ft 116 lb-ft Range City/Highway/Combined 89/45/60 miles 179/90/120 miles 82/39/53 miles 163/78/105 miles Max full charge time 5.2 hours  9.8 hours 5.2 hours 9.8 hours Transmission Clutchless direct drive Clutchless direct drive Clutchless direct drive Clutchless direct drive ABS brakes  Yes Yes  Yes  Yes Wheelbase (inches)  55.5  55.5  56.2  56.2 Seat height (inches, laden)  31.8  31.8  33.2  33.2 Wheels front/rear (inches)  17/17 17/17  19/17  19/17 Dry weight (pounds)  313  414  317 419 2018 Zero Motorcycle Motocross and Supermoto bikes

The Zero FX motocross and FXS supermoto models share many components and the same $8,500 starting price, but each is set up for its specific sport. Motocross is primarily off-road riding and racing and supermoto is a combination of off-road and road racing. The Zero FX and FXS are the company's lightest bikes, at 247 and 251 pounds, respectively.

Both bikes are available in three power configurations, all with the Z-Force 75-5 electric motor. The base models have a 3.6kWh modular battery pack that produces 27 horsepower and 78 pound-feet of torque. You can buy a second 3.6kWh m odule for an additional $2,900 and have both on board for a total of 46 horsepower and an $11,300 starting price tag. For people who engage in day-long racing events, or just want to spend more time and go further without recharging, you can keep as many modular battery units on hand as you can afford at $2,900 each and theoretically keep on going, as long as someone lugs pre-charged battery modules along.

The third option for the FX and FXS is to buy them with a 7.2kWh battery pack installed. You can't hot swap batteries, so you'll be limited to that battery's range before recharging. The good news is the 7.2kWh version's $10,500 starting price is $900 less than the modular version with two 3.6kWh batteries. So once again, it makes sens e to figure out how you'll use the bike before choosing a configuration. One additional advantage of the base models is you can buy extra battery modules later to save on your initial cash outlay.

The FX motocross bike has 21-inch front wheels and 18-inch rear wheels, with more dirt-ready tires. The FX 's 34.7-inch seat reflects the larger wheels and greater suspension travel than the 32.9-inch seat on the FXS supermoto bike, which has 17-inch wheels front and rear and tires more suitable for fast street riding.

Speeding Long Island driver lies to cop, phones in fake emergency

She was caught speeding — and the lies coming out of her mouth were moving just as fast.

A Long Island speed demon tried to fib her way out of a ticket early Thursday by telling a cop that her mother was in the hospital, then phoning in a fake 911 emergency to divert the officer who was tailing her, Suffolk County police said.

Alfreda Chaplin, 43, was zipping eastbound along Route 27 in Patchogue about 2:30 a.m. when a Highway Patrol cop pulled her 2008 Mercedes Benz over for speeding, police said.

As soon as the cop walked to her window, she offered an elaborate lie about racing to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Medical Center to visit her dying mother.

Teen driver killed after crashing into truck on Bronx highway

The officer allowed her to go, but said he would follow her to the hospital.

As she drove to the hospital, she called 911 from her cellphone, gave a false name and reported she had been assaulted by her husband, who she claimed had left her on the service road to the Sunrise Highway — close to where she was driving.

Chaplin apparently hoped that the cop following her would be directed to the new "emergency," but the 911 operator quickly linked the call to her phone, police said.

The cop pulled Chaplin over again and police said she fessed up to making the bogus call.

Driver in serious condition after crashing into tree in Queens

Cops charged her with falsely reporting an incident. She was also given a speeding violation.

    Her arraignment was pending Thursday.

iPhone X: When, where, and how to preorder Apple’s latest smartphone

It's time: The iPhone X pre-order begins this Friday, October 27 at 12:01 a.m.

The store typically goes down a few hours before the pre-order period starts—which is just past the stroke of midnight on Friday, October 27 (12:01 a.m. Pacific/3:01 a.m. Eastern). Once it comes back up, select your preferred color, capacity, and carrier, and keep your fingers crossed for a quick ship time.

To make checkout even speedier on Friday, consider selecting a "favorite" iPhone ahead of time.

Come Friday, log back in to the Apple store online, go over to your shopping cart (the bag icon in the top right corner), and click on Favorites to select that model for checkout. In the Apple Store app, tap Account, then My Favorites. You might want mark a backup favorite as well, just in case your first choice has too long of a ship date.

Another thing to do ahead of Friday: check your account status with your carrier to make sure you don't run into any unexpected problems.

Pre-order the iPhone X: iPhone Upgrade Plan

Apple is continuing its iPhone Upgrade Program for the iPhone X. This program allows you to upgrade to a new iPhone every year by paying monthly installments directly to Apple via a third-party loan. Here's the cost breakdown:

  • 64GB: $49.91 per month
  • 256GB: $56.16 per month
  • The cost of the iPhone Upgrade Program includes AppleCare+, which would be an additional charge of $199 if you were to pay for the phone in full up front.

If you're already part of the iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple suggests that you get pre-approved for your loan ahead of time if you want to buy an iPhone X during the pre-sale period—the iPhone X pre-approval window ends on Thursday, October 26 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific.

Curiously, the only way to get pre-approved is to use the Apple Store app on your iPhone. Launch the app, and look for the "Get a head start on your upgrade" banner at the top of the Discover page. From there, the app will walk you through the pre-approval process, which involves selecting your preferred iPhone, confirming your carrier, and providing your Social Security number and date of birth for a credit check. Once approved, you'll have three days to complete your purchase after the pre-order begins—otherwise, you'll have to get pre-approved again.

AT&T Next lets you get a new iPhone 8 for $0 down as long as you make monthly payments, starting at $33.34 per month spread out over 30 months (with a 24-month option available).

    Pre-order the iPhone X: Verizon

Verizon also offers an online pre-order. This year, if you trade in a phone (Verizon's taking phones as old as the iPhone 5), you can save up to $300 off of your iPhone 8. Your trade-in device must be in good working and cosmetic condition, of course. Verizon is also offering the option to pay for the phone in full or through a 24-month installment plan, which starts at $41.66 per month.

    Pre-order the iPhone X: Sprint

Sprint's pre-order option may be offering some of the lowest prices around. New and current Sprint customers can get the iPhone X starting at $22.22 per month if you bring in an eligible device to trade in with Sprint Flex. For iPhone users, that means an iPhone 6/6 Plus, iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, or an iPhone 8/8 Plus. This could be a savings of up to $350.

All monthly payment-based iPhone plans come with Sprint's iPhone Forever program, which lets you trade in your phone every 12 months. Sprint's iPhone Forever program is technically a 22-month lease.

    Pre-order the iPhone X: T-Mobile

T-Mobile customers will likely find it easiest to buy an iPhone X directly from the carrier, as it's the only way to get access to a standard installment plan for payment.

Daughter of Apple exec leaks video of herself trying the upcoming iPhone X, weeks before its release

THE daughter of an Apple engineer has filmed herself exploring the hotly anticipated iPhone X and uploaded the video to YouTube, weeks before its launch.

Dad's bosses clearly weren't impressed with the early leak, which came from inside the secretive technology company's California headquarters.

Just hours after vlogger Brooke Amelia Peterson's clip went live, it was promptly deleted.

"Dad has the new iPhone X ... look how big the screen is. It's pretty," she says in the since-removed clip.

However Apple enthusiasts made copies of the footage and began sharing it, eager to get an in-depth look at the most advanced iPhone model yet.

Websites devoted to the company's gadgets quickly described it as the "most extensive hands-on video yet".

RELATED: Apple's iPhone X nightmare — a dire shortage of the devices

The smartphone was created to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the revolutionary gadget but pre-orders don't open until this Friday.

It'll then be another week at least until the handsets begin shipping.

While the iPhone X was announced last month, along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models, there were few detailed looks at it.

In her clip, apparently shot at the cafeteria at her dad's office, Peterson gives a thorough overview of the phone's many features.

She pays for her lunch with Apple Pay — technology she claims her father worked on — and then marvel's at the iPhone X's huge screen, vibrant display and cameras.

"The camera is what is so insane to me. See how good it looks?"

She also shows its animated emoji technology — users can scan their own face and have it animated as an emoji character. Her dad can be heard in the background demonstrating the feature.

A big new inclusion of the iPhone X is a in-built security system called Face ID that lets users unlock the handset with their face.

The launch of Google's new Pixel 2 smartphones is a disaster

google pixel 2 xl assistantThe Google Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2. Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

  • Google's new iPhone rival, the Pixel 2, has been beset by problems.
  • There are numerous issues reported with the Pixel 2 XL's screen, while the Pixel 2 is making weird noises.
  • The company is investigating, but some reviewers are warning customers to hold off on buying the phone for now.
  • On October 4, Google launched the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL — its two new high-end, iPhone-rivalling smartphones.

The two devices looked distinctive, and were initially well-reviewed. "There's no better Android phone, anywhere, than the Pixel 2," wrote Wired. It is "simply fantastic," said Trusted Reviews. "Were it not for a few issues," The Verge declared, "it might have received the highest score we've ever given a phone."

Since then, things haven't gone so well.

The new smartphones have been beset by a wave of issues, from potentially catastrophic problems with the Pixel 2 XL's screen to weird clicking noises coming from the smaller Pixel 2, delivery delays, and more.

It's an embarrassing setback for Google as it tries to establish itself as a phone maker to rival Apple and Samsung.

There are multiple issues with the Pixel 2 XL's screen

    First, the screens.

There's a whole host of complaints from customers about the OLED screen in the larger Pixel 2 XL made by LG.

First, there have been numerous reports of "ghosts" of images and icons remaining on the screen of the Pixel 2 XL after they should've have disappeared (e.g. a faint residual navigation bar appearing at all times).

    — Alex Dobie (@alexdobie) October 22, 2017

It's not clear if it's temporary "image retention" or far more serious "burn-in," which could necessitate replacements to be issued. Google is investigating and replacing faulty devices, but some critics are already urging customers not to buy the device until the problem has been identified.

"We're temporarily removing our score on the Pixel 2 XL," The Verge warned. "In the meantime, we can't recommend buying this phone until we can definitively say that the screen isn't permanently damaging itself within weeks of buying it."

Next up, there has been criticism of the white balance of the Pixel 2 XL's screen, as well as reports of graininess on some screens.

9to5Google also reports that there is significant "black smearing" — when blacks appear to smear across the screen while scrolling. Here's a video showing how that looks:

Looks even worse here. Seriously for a second I thought "did the Reddit app add animations to video thumbnails?"

    Nope. 30% brightness btw. pic.twitter.com/P0Pr60BdZd

google pixel 2The Google Pixel 2. Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

The Pixel 2 initially seemed to be free of the technical issues marring the 2 XL's roll-out. But now it's facing its own problems.

Dozens of users have complained in the official Google forums that their devices are making strange clicking and high-pitched whining noises.

"Whenever the phone is unlocked, I can hear a constant ticking (like the second hand of a watch) if the phone is against my ear. Doesn't happen when the screen is off, or when the screen is on but the phone is locked," one disgruntled customer wrote.

"Experiencing high pitched whirling noises when phone is up to ear in calls. Also during normal use can put phone up to my ear and hear the noise," said another.

It sounds like switching off NFC (temporarily) solves the clicking noise — but the whining is unconnected. A Google spokesperson told Business Insider it is aware of the reports and is looking into the issue.

There have been issues with pricing and deliveries

pixel 2 xl cameraThe Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have great cameras, however. Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

Some customers who want Pixel 2's are having trouble getting their hands on them.

Per Android Police, some people have had their orders pushed back by as much as a month, with Google offering a free case to say sorry.

This isn't a serious issue — delays are fairly common on sales of in-demand smartphones — but it's still frustrating for the customers involved.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Verizon was overcharging people who bought the phone at pop-up stores in the US by $30 (£22).

It's the second PR disaster in a month

In short: There's a whole host of issues.

Time will tell whether the problems are permanent, or if they can be fixed with software updates. And even if they are significant hardware problems that necessitate repairs (or even a recall), it necessarily isn't the end of Google's smartphone ambitions.

After all, Samsung bounced back even after its flagship Galaxy S7 wouldn't stop catching fire.

That said, it's clearly a significant setback. After all, Google is still new to hardware, and trying to build a reputation as a company capable of building gadgets as well as the software that powers them.

Earlier this month, the Californian firm was forced to permanently disable a button on its Google Home Mini smart speaker after it was found to be secretly recording people. A second hardware screw up within a month, this one affecting its flagship devices, is a reputational nightmare.
