Women are having a profound new relationship … with their smartphones

SmartphoneREUTERS/Danny Moloshok

If you are a woman and you love your smartphone, you are not alone.

Marketing startup Influence Central interviewed 500 women about how they use their smartphone, a redux of the same survey they did in 2002.

And the results show that women are having a love-affair-type relationship with these devices, using them in both predictable, and surprising, new ways.

Smartphone health: Apple releases software for medical apps

"Now it's finally launched the software for developers to use-along with rolling out the first apps to make use of it. The idea behind CareKit is for developers to build new apps that make it easier for patients to collect data about their health, log their symptoms, and share information with medics and carers".

While the market is already flooded with hundreds of health-related apps, Apple feel the need to leave their mark on a new ecosystem of treatment programs. It is aimed at personal care rather than medical research, a framework that developers can use to create apps for individuals to manage their own healthcare with. With all this functions the app will also help the patient to share the information to the respective people directly from the app. Beth Isreal Deaconess is working on an app for chronic condition management, the University of Rochester is developing a Parkinson's tool, Texas Medical Center is developing care coordination tools, and Cleveland Clinic is working on a CareKit app for asthma and COPD patients. They can share the information with their doctors, other family members, their midwife, and even babysitters. Its application, Start, is now updated with CareKit features that let users take a depression test, track their progress and what side effects they're exper iencing, and decide if an antidepressant is working for them. Goetz said his company is also developing back-end software for medical offices that will comply with federal confidentiality rules.

While many standalone health apps will be created with CareKit, the real power of the framework lies in creating apps that communicate with larger healthcare systems. "They're trying to understand which ones are valid tools and which aren't necessarily useful", he said.

According to Apple Insider, Apple announced its CareKit platform in March, presenting it as a smaller scale open-source tool similar to the ResearchKit, Apple's other open source framework.

CareKit is open-source and now available on GitHub, so other developers can tap into its features for their own health care apps.

The company touted the platform last month, saying that it will assist coders in crafting better health apps to fit devices that run on iOS. Do you think it is a leap forward in the health industry? Through this app, they can also log the progress of their pregnancy so it will be easier for them to take note of certain things. It is designed so that developers won't find any difficulty in building health apps since it offers several integrations including monitoring of medical symptoms, keeping tabs on medication schedules, and sending images of injuries.

"When you look at CareKit, HealthKit, the whole focus is to continue to grow that ecosystem and just have more offerings out there and have the best possibilities for consumers out there", Zino said.

Chipmaker Rout Worsens as Peak Smartphone Fears Punish Suppliers

(Bloomberg) -- Concern that Apple Inc.'s sales travails signal the end to the boon period for smartphone makers sent semiconductor stocks into a tailspin.

A plunge of as much as 3.2 percent in makers of computer chips wiped away more than $15 billion in value, as concern that slowing sales of Apple's iPhones will damp demand for the semiconductors that power them. All 16 members of the Standard & Poor's 500 subindex that tracks the group tumbled, led by Skyworks Solutions Inc.'s plunge of 7 percent, the most since October.

Disappointing sales forecasts from technology giants including Apple and Microsoft Corp. have led to deep losses among makers of everything from software to computers and the components that make them work. Economic concerns are weighing down demand for new smartphones and other personal gadgets, with data Friday showing consumer spending rose less than forecast in March, wrapping up the weakest quarter in a year.

"All the markets are really challenging right now, whether it's servers, PCs or smartphones," Ian Ing, an analyst at MKM Partners, said. "Apple is in the middle of a weak period and investors are still digesting that. The thinking is that smartphone growth is really saturated."

The S&P 500 fell 1.1 percent at 2:11 p.m. in New York, with technology shares losing 1.3 percent. The semiconductor index dropped 3.1 percent, the most among 24 groups in the broader gauge.

At the heart of concerns for chipmakers are difficulties they face in adapting to slowing markets in both the U.S. and China, Ing said. Analysts now project the industry's first-quarter earnings will fall 7 percent, compared to a 6.5 percent decline expected a week ago. Analysts see a full-year profit decline of 9 percent.

Losses in the tech sector accelerated Friday as Seagate Technology Plc and Western Digital Corp., makers of data storage products, both reported results that missed estimates and said future sales will fall short of analyst forecasts. The companies' shares fell at least 13 percent as concern that slumping PC sales will continue to weigh on their valuations.

Apple has plunged 12 percent in the past five days and is mired in its longest losing streak since 2013, after reporting on Tuesday its first quarterly revenue contraction in more than a decade and forecasting another decline in its next results.

Micron Technology Inc. fell 5.5 percent on Friday, an about-face from gains just before Apple reported earnings, when the chipmaker saw its best day since January. Apple is Micron's third-biggest customer, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Texas Instruments Inc., which relies on Apple for 11 percent of its revenue according to Bloomberg data, plunged 2.9 percent. The suppliers' pain was magnified at the end of the week after billionaire investor Carl Icahn said he had sold a remaining $4.8 billion stake in Apple amid concern the company will struggle to sell in China.

Among other companies declining on first-quarter earnings, semiconductor maker Xilinx Inc. saw it's biggest two-day slide since October following its report Wednesday. Intel Inc., the biggest maker of computer chips, fell in sympathy, tumbling 2.8 percent as it careens toward its worst week since Feb. 5. The company earlier this month said it would slash 12,000 jobs after forecasting sales below analyst estimates.

What People Could Expect From the 2016 Releases of Nexus Smartphones

During 2015, there were two Nexus smartphones that Google made public – a small one LG created and the Huawei phablet, which came with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow software.

It appears that just one Nexus this year is going to run the latest Android N OS – software that's being tested by a number of Nexus owners. It's set for launch before fall. Based on the rumors, LG is taking a bit of a break and isn't going to focus on the development of another Nexus device, which would allow HTC and Huawei to take the stage.

The Nexus 6P is powered with the Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 Octa-Core processor with a 2GHz speed. However, the Nexus 5X is built with a less powerful Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 chipset that comes with a Hexa-Core processor with a 1.82GHz speed.

Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 820 chipset has been installed in many smartphone manufacturers' phones – HTC 10, LG G5 and Galaxy S7, to name a few – and the chances of it going into Google's next line of Nexus is phone is high. That's mainly because rumors are persisting that a Snapdragon 830 is set to be released next year.  Snapdragon 823 is likely to be used only by the soon-to-be-released beasts that will cost tons of money.

Google knows that fans want an affordable decent device but offers the latest Android updates. If there's going to be another Nexus, it'll have weaker specs like the Snapdragon 818.

Google's OEMs have yet to introduce the waterproofing feature to the Nexus, but they may soon change during the year. Another user-desire change is the pressure-sensitive touch display, which is already offered on the Android N and iPhone 6S. Several rumors claim HTC has included it to its list and will add it to whatever Google-manufactured Nexus model.

A number of popular smartphones use the 12MP sensor that have an aperture of f/2.0, 1.55um pixel size, and offers features like dual-tone LED flash and laser autofocus. It's thought that the latest Nexus is going to have a wider aperture camera.

India smartphone market up 23% amid flat global growth

NEW DELHI: India smartphone market grew 23 per cent in the first quarter of 2016, surpassing the US to become the second largest country in terms of users, even as sales remained flat globally, research firm Counterpoint said today.

"India which surpassed USA to become the second largest smartphone market in terms of users has continued to register strong demand for smartphone," Counterpoint Research Research Director Peter Richardson said.

There is a massive opportunity for every player in the mobile value chain when the second largest market by volume is still under penetrated and growing, while the rest of the world smartphone demand has waned, he added.

"India is the next China...more than a billion smartphones will be sold in India over the next five years. This will drive the nu mber of smartphone users from quarter of a billion to more than half a billion in the same time period," he said.

Furthermore, the advent of advanced 4G LTE network infrastructure will also be a key catalyst in the country's smartphone adoption in coming years, it said.

Global smartphone shipments remained flat at 344 million units in January-March, impacted by weaker demand in China and Brazil as well as parts of Europe, as per Counterpoint.

It added that this is the first time since the launch of smartphones that the segment globally has seen no growth.

Samsung led the India smartphone tally with 29 per cent share. Interestingly, Reliance Jio, which forayed into the market this quarter itself with brand 'Lyf', cornered 7 per cent share.

"We estimate, this quarter strong shipment was more of channel filling, the actual sell-through will happen in Q2 2016 as the operator starts full-fledged marketing and promotional activity," the report said.

Lyf also became the second largest LTE phone supplier surpassing Micromax and Lenovo during january-March 2016.

Others in the list included Micromax (17 per cent), Intex (10 per cent) and Lenovo (8 per cent) and Karbonn (5 per cent).

Apple recorded a stellar 62 per cent growth in the first quarter from year-ago period, though on a lower base, thus registering back-to-back sequential growth in spite of negative growth results globally for iPhones.

In terms of overall mobile phone sales (including feature phones), Samsung led the segment with 25 per cent share, followed by Micromax (14 per cent), Intex (11 per cent), Lava (9 per cent) and Karbonn (5 per cent).

"The demand for LTE smartphones remained strong as two out of three smartphone shipped was LTE capable," Counterpoint Senior Analyst Tarun Pathak said.

SpaceX releases 360-degree video of rocket landing on barge

SpaceX just released a 360-degree barge-level video showing the historic landing of its Falcon 9 rocket on an ocean platform.

The company pulled off the feat of landing a 14-story-tall rocket ship on a barge floating in the Atlantic Ocean on April 8.

On Friday, SpaceX posted on YouTube a video of the landing that lets you look around in all directions -- and feel as if you were standing on the deck as the rocket touched down.

The video uses YouTube's new 360-degree view feature. On a desktop computer, you can use the mouse to click on the screen and move the image around. On a smartphone, you can move the device to explore your surroundings.

The grainy video also reveals how tricky it is to land at sea. With a camera on board SpaceX's autonomous spaceport drone ship (ASDS), you can feel how the ship sways back and forth. Plus, it's obvious that the rocket slides a few feet on deck after it cuts the engine.

SpaceX failed to land the rocket on three previous attempts, with the rocket collapsing and blowing up.

It's a neat use of the technology, bringing viewers to the front seat.

Now the question is: Will SpaceX allow a similar in-the-front-seat experience when a rocket heads for Mars in 2018?

New Nexus Phones To Be Made By HTC

Several reports are claiming that Google is working on the successors of Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P, dubbed the HTC Nexus M1 and S1, which, according to multiple mobile analysts, could become the supreme devices of the year.

Previous rumors have said that Google has partnered with HTC, ostensibly for a new Nexus project.

At the same time, a source told the publication that the codenames of the two new Google devices are Marlin and Sailfish.

The other smartphone that will be released by Google has the codename Sailfish, but its specs aren't known for now. The Nexus 9 tablet featuring an 8.9-inch screen that was released in 2014 was also manufactured by HTC.

The Information recently reported that Google is prepared to have a tighter control over its Nexus line by building smartphones similar to its Pixel devices, which are designed without any help from a third party.

The Taiwanese tech company has been struggling in the smartphone market since the past couple of years. Its latest smartphone, One A9, did not gain much popularity among users due to its resounding resemblance with the iPhone. The rumors seem to have weight on them, as recent speculations suggest that HTC is already working on two new handset flagships under the Nexus banner. The Nexus model that appeared on Geekbench under the title "google Nexus 6P is a direct sequel to 2015's Huawei-made Nexus 6P, which was powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor backed by 3GB of RAM".

Google has announced to host the I/O conference in May, and Android N is expected to be launched this summer.

As soon as we get some more details on these two new Nexus smartphones, including some specifications on the handsets and also some pictures of the devices, we will let you guys know.

LG G5 India release rumored to arrive on May 23

We are still early in 2016, but thus far the LG G5 has been the biggest surprise in the smartphone world. If you reside in India, you will soon be able to grab one for yourself as the LG G5 India release date is rumored to arrive late next month.

Whenever a new flagship drops, the big money regions generally get them first while other locales have to wait a bit longer than they would like. That isn't always the case, but it's rare to see a true "global launch" anymore. The LG G5 release date for India is something that has been the subject of quite a few debates, but we may be able to put those rumors to rest soon. While nothing is official, a new report suggests the LG G5 India release date will come on May 23.

News18 is reporting that the LG G5 pre-orders in India will go live on May 13, a few weeks before the handset will start rolling out to consumers in the region. As a refresher, the phone is modular to a degree thanks to the "LG Friends" and the magic slot, but also has all the horsepower you could ask for from a current flagship. That means you'll get a Snapdragon 820 with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 5.3-inch QHD panel. Other features to note include a fingerprint scanner, 16MP/8MP camera combo, a 2,800mAh battery, and Android 6.0. You can read more about the LG G5 here or see how it stacks up against devices like the Huawei Mate 8.

For now, you'll want to take the LG G5 India release date with a dose of salt, but make it a small one. We already know the company plans on launching the device in the region soon, and the timeline sounds about right considering other handsets are waiting in the wings. Unfortunately, the LG G5 price for India is still up in the air although it's expected to come in somewhere under Rs. 50,000 in the region.

Smartphone Market Hits a Ceiling

"It is the first time ever since the modern smartphone market began in 1996 that global shipments have shrunk on an annualized basis", said Strategy Analytics director Linda Sui.

Mobile analyst firm Juniper Research estimates that the number of smartphone shipments reached 320 million in Q1 2016, representing a year-on-year decline of almost 6%.

The analyst calculates global smartphone shipments fell 3 per cent annually to reach 334.6 million units in Q1 this year, down from 345 million in Q1 2015. Year-over-year shipment growth was 62.5% in 2013, but by 2015 it had dropped to 2.5%. IDC placed Vivo with a market share of 4.3 percent as the fifth largest player, while Strategy Analytics estimates that Xiaomi managed to retain the fifth position it held in the previous quarter.

And on Tuesday, second place vendor Cupertino.

At the same time, the share for Apple declined from 17.7% to 15.3%.

One of the major reasons why this is now the new normal for the smartphone industry is this: everyone already has a good-enough, high-quality smartphone.

Several vendors without a strong base in China are also suffering. In the first quarter, it shipped 18.5 million smartphones, up by a whopping 153 percent from the same period a year ago.

There have been troubling signs in the smartphone market for a while now, ever since China reported a decline in its shipments around a year ago.

Samsung has increased profits, but has not produced a strong volume turnaround.

Huawei is continuing its rise, with over 27 million devices shipped. Large growth in other areas such as Africa is unlikely it said unless there is a dramatic reduction in prices of lower-end smartphones, meaning that the market decline will continue throughout the year.

So what does all of this mean for the smartphone market? That increase marks the smallest year-over-year growth on record, according to research firm IDC's latest quarterly mobile phone report.

He said the cycle is producing commoditization, price competition and the resulting margin squeeze, although he said some room for growth remains since about 40 per cent of global handset users still own a feature phone.

With this realization, smartphone makers are faced with a tougher competition.

IDC said that shipments declined 0.6% for No. 1 vendor Samsung and 16.3% for No. 2 vendor Apple.

Xiaomi's meteoric growth has slowed, to just over 14 million units shipped, a 1% decline on shipments compared to this time a year ago. IDC says Samsung's global share of smartphone sales slipped to 24.5 per cent in the quarter from 24.6 per cent a year ago, although the company remains market leader.

"Tablet replacement cycles are creeping closer and closer to PC replacement cycles and further from smartphone replacement cycles", Smith said.

Global smartphone shipments decline for the first time ever

Global smartphone shipments fell 3 percent year-on-year in 2016's first quarter, Strategy Analytics said in a release. Year-over-year shipment growth was 62.5% in 2013, but by 2015 it had dropped to 2.5%.

Nearly 20% of OPPO's shipments went outside of China in 2015, and the company's expansion in China itself has been through offline channels and a strong push to lower-tier cities.

While Samsung remains the leading smartphone vendor, it saw its shipments drop 4 percent year over year.

"It is the first time ever since the modern smartphone market began in 1996 that global shipments have shrunk on an annualized basis", said Strategy Analytics director Linda Sui.

Samsung: The conglomerate on Thursday reported a jump in first quarter profit driven by its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones, despite a 0.6 per cent annual decline in smartphones shipped. OPPO shipped 13.2 million smartphones and captured 13 percent marketshare in China in Q1 2016, up an impressive 67 percent annually.

Huawei is continuing its rise, with over 27 million devices shipped.

Outside of China, many of these brands are virtually unknown and the ability of these rapidly growing Chinese vendors to gain entry into mature markets such as the United States and Western Europe will be essential if they have aspirations of catching Apple or Samsung at the top, IDC said.

Apple reported Tuesday that the number of smartphones it sold worldwide fell by 16 percent to 51.2 million units in its fiscal second quarter ended March 26. Large growth in other areas, such as Africa, is unlikely unless there is a dramatic reduction in the ASP (average selling price) of lower-end smartphones, meaning that the market decline will to continue throughout the year.

While Samsung remains the leader, shipping 81.9 million phones in the quarter, that number was down 0.6% compared to previous year.

So what does all of this mean for the smartphone market?

Almost all smartphone brands faced varying degrees of decline with the exception of Samsung and Huawei, who have seen mild and moderate growth respectively.

IDC said that shipments declined 0.6% for No. 1 vendor Samsung and 16.3% for No. 2 vendor Apple. IDC says Samsung's global share of smartphone sales slipped to 24.5 per cent in the quarter from 24.6 per cent a year ago, although the company remains market leader.

"The fierce competitive environment could see weaker players become takeover targets, like BlackBerry or Sony", he said in an email, adding that he believes the slowdown in smartphone shipments is mostly due to penetration maturity and only partly due to economic headwinds.

"Tablet replacement cycles are creeping closer and closer to PC replacement cycles and further from smartphone replacement cycles", Smith said.

The breakneck pace of smartphone growth in China has slowed dramatically.

'Q1 smartphone sales flat as demand weakens in China, Brazil'

NEW DELHI: Global smartphone shipments remained flat at 344 million units in January-March, impacted by weaker demand in China and Brzail as well as parts of Europe, research firm Counterpoint said today.

This is the first time ever since the launch of smartphones that the segment has seen no growth, it said.

While three out of four mobile phones shipped on the planet now are smartphones but shipment has "slowed down considerably", Counterpoint said in a report.

"The slowdown can be attributed due to higher sell-in during the holiday season quarter and weaker demand in markets such as Brazil, China, Indonesia and parts of Europe," the report said.

Also, Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo have captured 33 per cent of the global smartphone market, it added.

"This is the first time ever since the launch of smartphone, the segment has seen 0 per cent growth, signaling the key global scale players need to invigorate sales with more exciting products and pricing schemes," he said.

Samsung led the smartphone market by volume with a market share of 22.8 per cent. However, its smartphone shipments declined six per cent year-on-year.

Apple, which saw its iPhone shipments declining, ranked second in the tally with 14.9 per cent share.

Others in the list included Huawei (8.3 per cent), Xiaomi (4.2 per cent), LG and Oppo (3.9 per cent each).

In terms of revenue share, Apple led the smartphone market with a healthy 40 per cent revenue share.

Samsung (23.2 per cent), Huawei (6 per cent), Oppo (3.6 per cent), Xiaomi and LG (2.8 per cent each) followed in the tally.

Panasonic Eluga Arc review: Great smartphone with a high price tag

Ratings: ****

Price: Rs 12, 490

Specifications: 4.7-inch IPS display (1280 x 720 pixels), 1.2Ghz quad core Snapdragon 410, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage + microSD (up to 32GB supported), 8MP rear camera with flash, 5MP front camera, dual SIM, 4G, VoLTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM, IR universal remote, Android 5.1, 1,800mAh battery, 130 grams.

Even though large screen phones are popular, there are some users who want to stick with compact sizes that can be managed with one hand. The problem is, no one wants to buck the trend and there aren't many new phones that offer looks and performance in a small package.

Panasonic's latest launch is for those who prefer a stylish device Its got a 2.5D curved glass display, curved metal body, a unibody design and chamfered silver edges around the camera module and fingerprint scanner. The phone looks and feels amazing. The power and volume buttons are on the right and you'll see the headphone jack and IR transceiver on top. The phone is comfo rtable to use even with one hand, thanks to the 4.7-inch LCD.

When it comes to the design of the phone, there is one letdown: thick screen bezels. The display appears to be edge to edge when the screen is switched off, but the 4.7-inch screen actually has thick bezels around it. Apart from this, the phone scores full marks for build quality and looks.

The 4.7-inch display has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels which keeps everything sharp. Brightness levels are good and it has wide viewing angles. Note that the android navigation buttons are onscreen which means that you don't always get to use the entire screen estate. Also, there are no settings for display enhancements or colour temperature adjustment.

We think that the Eluga Arc is the second phone (the first was the Moto G series) that demonstrates that specifications are not important for a good smartphone experience. Even with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and 2GB RAM, the Eluga Arc delivers zippy navig ation, seamless switching between running app and has no issues playing full HD videos. Gaming performance was a mixed bag. While the phone managed to play most games, there were a few dropped frames in some heavy games. Battery life is another surprise; despite the 1,800mAh battery, it easily managed to last from 8am to 8pm with normal usage (constant data connectivity).

The camera performance is above average — the primary camera impresses with auto focus and shutter speed, but has visible noise in images taken indoors. The front camera also suffers from the same issue. That being said, both front and rear camera capture lots of detail with natural colours while shooting outdoors in daylight. The camera interface offers a Pro mode for users who prefer to tinker with advanced controls for the camera. Another thing we liked about the camera interface is that there are various filters available to use while video recording — these add a unique touch to your videos.

Th e phone has a fingerprint scanner for added security. It works well (recognised a registered finger 7 out of 10 times) but the unlocking speed is a bit on the slower side compared to phones from Coolpad and Xiaomi. The IR experience is good and the built in app has support for a majority of Indian set top boxes and devices. It can also learn from other remotes. Overall, the Eluga Arc is one of the best phones in Panasonic's smartphone range. But at Rs 12,490, it is more expensive than phablet options like the Redmi Note 3 and the LeEco Le 1s which offer better specifications and performance. For those who prefer a compact device, the Coolpad Note 3 Lite delivers similar performance and features with a 5-inch display at a much lower price (Rs 6,999).

Samsung Profit Beats Estimates as Early S7 Smartphone Release Pays Off

Samsung Electronics Co. posted first-quarter profit that beat analyst estimates as it capitalized on a lull in new Apple Inc. products with the early release of its Galaxy S7 smartphones.

QuickTake Samsung

Net income, excluding minority interests, rose to 5.26 trillion won ($4.6 billion) in the three months ended March, the Suwon, South Korea-based company said in a filing Thursday. That compares with the 4.42 trillion-won average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Samsung also said it will buy back 2.03 trillion won worth of common and preferred shares.

Samsung priced the Galaxy S7 below its predecessor and also fixed criticisms of the earlier model to capture customers between new product releases by Apple That helped the South Korean company withstand the impact of a global smartphone slowdown that hit prices at its semiconductor and display businesses.

"Moving up the S7 release date to March, about a month earlier than the predecessor, even at a lower price was a good strategy for Samsung," Dohoon Lee, an analyst at CIMB Securities, said in Seoul before the earnings release. "Especially when iPhone 6S demand was waning."

Mobile Strategy

Apple underscored the smartphone sector's woes with its first quarterly revenue drop in more than a decade. IPhone sales fell to 51.2 million in the January-March period, from 61.2 million a year earlier. Samsung's sales rose 5.6 percent to 49.8 trillion won during the period, compared with estimates for 48.8 trillion won. The weaker Korean won against major currencies in the first quarter positively impacted operating profit by approximately 400 billion won, reflected mainly in the component business, Samsung said.

Shares of Samsung fell less than 1 percent in early trading Thursday. The stock has gained about 3 percent this year following three straight annual declines.

Operating profit at the mobile unit rose to 3.89 trillion won from 2.74 trillion won a year earlier.Samsung revamped its strategy with the S7, releasing it in March and lowering the price. The revival of demand for the top-end model was also accompanied by strong growth in its cheaper line-ups, such as J series, said Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint Research.

"Compared to the Galaxy S6 series performance last year, the S7 series is showing as much as 50 percent higher sales during its opening month of sales in some markets," Counterpoint said in an April 7 report.

Chips Under Pressure

For the second quarter, Samsung said it anticipates solid performance, driven by steady earnings in the mobile and chip businesses plus improvement of the home appliance and display divisions. Looking ahead to the rest of 2016, the company expects the mobile, home appliance, and TV businesses to continue to generate higher earnings while focusing on stabilizing the component business in the second half.

Operating income at the chip unit was 2.63 trillion won, compared with 2.93 trillion won a year earlier as the slackening demand pressured component prices, including semiconductors and displays.

DDR3 4-gigabit dynamic random access chips averaged $1.81 in the latest quarter, compared with $3.42 a year earlier, according to data from inSpectrum Inc. Still, a brighter shipment outlook from rival SK Hynix Inc. this week had set a positive tone on the overall semiconductor industry.

"The market thought Samsung's second-quarter chip profit would either be flat or slightly lower than the first quarter, but SK Hynix's optimistic comment also boded well for Samsung," Claire Kim, an analyst at Daishin Securities Co., said.

Display Business

The operating loss from displays was 270 billion won, compared with a profit of 520 billion won a year earlier, amid persistent price declines of liquid crystal displays.

The unit, the market leader of screens using organic light-emitting diodes for smaller devices, is in exclusive talks with Apple to supply screens for iPhone models scheduled for release next year, according to people familiar with the matter. The annual plan for capital expenditure has not yet been confirmed but is projected to increase slightly compared to last year's based on various business opportunities. Display panel spending may increase this year as the company sees strong market demand for OLED panels, it said.

Operating profit at the consumer-electronics division, which comprises TV and home appliance businesses, was 510 billion won in the quarter, reversing a loss of 140 billion won a year earlier, largely driven by higher profit from television sales amid falling panel prices.

Nintendo is bringing Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to smartphones

Tweet Share Share on Facebook Tweet Share Pin Share

Nintendo announced today that it's bringing two of its best-loved franchises to smartphones: Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem. The company revealed the news during its yearly earnings call, also confirming that its next console — the mysterious NX — is headed for a March 2017 release.

Few details were given about the future smartphone titles, but the two games seem like a smart choice for Nintendo's developing mobile strategy. The company launched its first smartphone app Miitomo in March, but the title was decidedly niche — a free-to-download social network driven by Nintendo's cartoonish Mii avatars. Nevertheless, the game still racked up more than 10 million downloads, and as more traditional titles with established fanbases, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem could do even better.

— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) April 27, 2016

Fire Emblem is a tactical RPG, with players controlling a roster of fantasy characters and deploying them in miniature battles. Animal Crossing is less straightforward to explain, but is similar to the Sims franchise — if, that is, all the human characters were replaced by cute, anthropomorphic animals. As titles that users can pick up and play for short bursts of time, both seem well suited to smartphone gaming.

The two titles will be coming to smartphones some time this Autumn, reports The Wall Street Journal, but we'll have to wait to find out more about them. Nintendo confirmed that it's on track to release four new smartphone games by March next year, so we may hear about more upcoming titles sooner rather than later.

Microsoft Surface Phone release date in April 2017: Desktop experience with Office software and Continuum

Microsoft Surface Phone release date in April 2017: Desktop experience with Office software and Continuum

So the question that almost everyone asked has been solved. The question 'when Microsoft's Surface Phone will be launched' has a definite answer now.

Latest reports suggest that Redmond based tech giant is all set to launch its marquee smartphone in the market to showcase its prowess with its technology and operating system next year. Reports suggest that the handset(s) will be launched in the market in April.

Media reports suggest that tech giant's Surface Phone will be arriving almost the same time when Microsoft will also be releasing its Windows 10 Redstone 2.

    microsoft lumia 650

A report in the leading tech blog Windows Central says that with Microsoft putting its complete focus around Windows 10 OS for now, the handset will be delayed. Microsoft would have loved to launch the Surface Phone much earlier, nonetheless it wants to give its users the best experience possible.

In the meantime a report in TechRadar says that Microsoft is working hard to turn smartphone into desktop with its impeccable Office software and its Continuum feature.

"Quite how Microsoft plans to make it the most secure phone is more questionable. It's got a lot of competition in that area from BlackBerry, Samsung KNOX and niche devices like the Turing Phone, but it makes sense for Microsoft to change its focus, given that it's making little headway against Android and iOS in the mainstream consumer market…If you're not interested in productivity or security the Surface Phone could still tempt you though, as previous rumors suggest it might come in three different versions- a consumer model, a business one and a premium edition", says the report.

Another report in the Bitbag says, "The key feature of Surface Phone will be its Continuum that'll differentiate the device from the other major players in the market. The feature, which already comes in devices like Lumia 950 and 950 XL among other devices, allows you to connect the mobile to larger displays with OS scaling appropriately to simulate a PC like experience. Microsoft's strategy with its mobile device is to make the Surface Phone a real alternative to a computer, specifically targeting business users to buy a single device instead of two".

Mobile phone companies oppose 'panic button' move, say will push up the prices for basic phones

NEW DELHI: Handset makers have opposed the government's move mandating global positioning system (GPS) on feature phones, arguing it would hit users at the lowest level as the cost of basic phones would go up by Rs 400 a massive increase in a market where the cheapest device is available for Rs 500.

The additional cost would wipe out the entry-level feature phone segment and potentially take away basic connectivity from millions of consumers, handset makers said, a day after the government issued a directive mandating all mobile phones to have an inbuilt GPS to identify the handset user's location from January 2018.

"Implementation of GPS in new mobile handset will not be in the interest of consumers at the bottom of the pyramid," said Indian Cellular Association (ICA) president Pankaj Mohi ndroo in a letter to telecom secretary JS Deepak, a copy of which was seen by ET.

"We suggest this particular aspect may be relooked at," he said, suggesting telecom-operator based security architecture, called A-GPS or Alternative GPS, as another way for security agencies to track consumers in need.

While the GPS component would cost up to Rs 66.7 ($1), the required software and technical enhancement would raise the overall increase in cost of at least Rs 266 to Rs 400 ($4-6), the association that represents handset makers said, making the case for reconsideration.

It argued that at a time when India is poised to be the global manufacturing hub for feature phones, more so for entry-level segment, the cost increase "will knockout the entry level feature phone segment". Despite the e ventual drop in volume as consumers would migrate to smartphones, feature phone volume will continue to sustain at 100 million units even after 2019, the association added.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) on Monday necessitated all new phones to have GPS from January 2018 and all new feature phones and smartphones sold in the country from January 2017, to also have a panic button feature that will allow women in distress to seek help.

While numeric keys 5 and 9 were identified as push buttons for an emergency in feature phone handsets, in smartphones, handset manufacturers will have to provide an 'emergency' button or a facility to send an alert by short-pressing the power on/off button thrice in quick succession.

Having worked on it for the last two years, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Tuesday said the in-built system of panic button on mobiles for women's safety is a "game changer", as women across the country, including rural areas now ha ve access to phones.

Executives at leading handset makers said that implementing of the panic button would require changes on a software, which can be easily done, and some have already started the process.

"We are already working on incorporating the panic button in our phones and should be able to meet the timelines prescribed by the ministry," said Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, head-mobile business, Intex Technologies.

Handset makers, including Samsung, Micromax, Lava, Intex, Microsoft and LG, have been part of the ongoing discussions with DoT and Department of Electronics & IT (DeitY) throughout 2014-2015 for creating an SOS, or panic button on mobile phones.

The long timeline of 2017 will also give ample time for the industry to implement the panic button facility. "We would be compliant to all government regulations," said Manu Jain, India head of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi.

Calls emanating from the button may go to number '112', the emergency n umber that is inbuilt in GSM phones which allows a user to make calls even if the phone is locked, out of balance or out of coverage area of a subscribed network.

However, a back-end infrastructure may be created to ensure that emergency calls are connected to call centres and in turn to security agencies.

112 is also the country's national emergency number which was given a go-ahead by the Telecom Commission last month.

iPhone 7 Release Date, Rumors, Features, Specs and Leaks: May Not Have the Fastest Flash Storage – 2016

Update – April 25, 2016 – According to a new report by KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 7 will not have any attractive selling points. He also notes that other manufacturers will do better than the iPhone this year.

The iPhone 7 will see a decline in sales, according to the analyst. He believes that Apple will only manage to ship between 190 to 210 million iPhones this year. This is because the iPhone 7 will not have any breakthrough features or new design.

Update – April 21, 2016 – According to a new report, the iPhone 7 coming later this year may not have the fastest flash storage in the industry. The recently announced Samsung Galaxy S7 uses a V-NAND UFS 2.0 storage manufactured by Samsung. ETNews reports that due to a disagreement with Apple, Samsung was taken off the NAND flash chip supplier list for the iPhone 7.

Next years iPhone will mostly have the new flash chip by Samsung, but the iPhone 7 will probably lag behind in storage per formance. Samsung recently unveiled a 256GB UFS 2.0 chip as well, which was rumored to be used in this years iPhone. Looks like that may not happen.

Update – April 17, 2016 – The latest rumor suggests that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be thinner than current models, measuring between 6 and 6.5mm.

Apple will be getting rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack to make the iPhone 7 thinner, but it was thought they'd use that space to increase the battery capacity. Instead, the company would just make the device thinner.

Update – April 6, 2016 – Once again, it is being said that only the larger 5.5 inch iPhone 7 model will come with a dual lens camera. KGI Security analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently sent out a note to investors, which was obtained by Apple Insider.

According to him, Apple will not sell more than 200 million iPhones in 2016. The company shipped around 230 million iPhones in 2015. Buyers may not be that impressed to have the dual camera iSig ht camera on only the 5.5-inch model. This could cause Apple to sell less number of iPhones in 2016.

Update – March 20, 2016 – New leaked photos of the iPhone 7 Plus have emerged that show the rear of the device. Rumors and reports have suggested that the larger iPhone 7 Plus will sport a dual camera setup and if this leaked photo is real, then it may be true.

It is recommended, to take this with a grain of salt, as these could be just fakes used for publicity. Chinese website posted a photo of an alleged silver iPhone 7 Plus that shows the dual-camera setup and re-positioned antenna lines.

At the bottom, you'll also see the Smart Connector that Apple has included on the iPad Pro. We're not sure what that would be used for on the iPhone 7.

    iPhone 7 Plus

Another set of photos were obtaine d by AppleInsider, which show an iPhone 7 without the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The photos also show an iPhone without the Home button.

There have been rumors that Apple may get rid of the Home Button and instead integrate the TouchID sensor and the button into the display. This seems highly unlikely, but would help Apple make a smaller device while retaining same screen size.

    iPhone 7 leak

    Apple iPhone 7 Rumors

    Update – March 10, 2016

New case leaks once again suggest that Apple will be letting go of the 3.5 mm head phone jack in iPhone 7. Leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer also known as @onleaks, posted some pictures of an alleged iPhone 7 case with an iPhone 6s in it.

Now, for the most part, the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 7 will be very close in design. However, one significant change will be the lack of a headphone jack. And as shown in the leaked photos of the iPhone 7 case, it seems to be true.

    iphone 7 case 1

The camera hole in the case seems to be bigger; we think it's for the dual camera, but it isn't that big either. The case is for the iPhone 7, not the iPhone 7 Plus, which is supposed to have the dual camera setup.

In the second picture below, you can see that a larger speaker cutout has replaced the cutout for the headphone jack.

    iphone 7 case leak

Update – March 5, 2016 – The Apple iPhone 7 could feature new LTE modems made by Intel, according to an analyst at CLSA Securities. Almost 30 to 40 percent of modems for the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be supplied by Intel, say sources who're familiar with the supply chain.

Apple normally uses LTE modems manufactured by Qualcomm, but this year's iPhone could see faster speeds with  450Mbps downloads and 100Mbps uploads. The Intel XMM 7360 chip will support LTE 10, giving the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus an immense boost. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus currently use Qualcomm MDM9635 modem, which offers 300Mbps downloads and 50Mbps uploads.

Update – March 3, 2016 – Apple will release the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus in September this year and the Plus model will feature some advanced camera tech. We've already heard several reports suggesting that the iPhone 7 Plus will be available in two variants, one with a dual camera system, the other with a single camera.

Now, the latest report states that Apple may call this model with dual cameras as 'iPhone 7 Pro'. Makes sense, don't you think? Take this report with a grain of salt though.

iPhone 7 Plus Dual Camera Rumor

Update – February 29, 2016 – There have been reports that the new iPhone 7 Plus will have a dual camera system that should help improve zoom, low light photography and overall quality. Apple is said to use the setup from Linx, a company they pur chased for their advancement in dual-camera technology.

Now, how would a dual-camera system work? Well, a competitor showed off a dual camera system at MWC 2016, which made optical zoom possible without any moving lenses. Also, the overall quality of the picture was better.

Corephotonics, the company behind the dual-camera tech, stated that the technology was available in 2014, but there were problems with manufacturing and supply.

    In a video by Cnet, a working example of the dual-camera setup was compared to the current iPhone 6s camera. Watch the video below;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0v-Lu-9eLE

The reports suggest that only the top end iPhone 7 Plus will get the dual camera setup and by the looks of the results, the tech is going to be a real step up.

    Dual-Cam Feature?

Apparently, Apple will use technology from the Israeli firm Linx Camera Inc, which they acquired last year. The Linx technology uses two cameras to capture two se parate images and then uses imaging software to stitch them together.

    iPhone 7 Dual Camera Feature

iPhone 7 Rumors: Dual Camera Feature

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September this year. Will we see a special edition iPhone 7 Plus with the dual camera? Or will they reserve this for an S version next year?

Updated on February 7, 2016: A new iPhone 7 rumor suggests that the next gen iPhone will include a ceramic back, a Super AMOLED display a nd will be waterproof. Yes, we thought it was sketchy as well when we read the rumored features.

The iPhone 7 is said to have a similar design to the iPhone 6 and 6s, expect that the rear Antenna bands will be gone. Also, it is said to include the Apple A10 processor, more RAM, better TouchID integration and improved camera.

This new rumor, coming from Chinese website Sina.com, has also released a render for the iPhone 7, with the ceramic back and all. Business Korea published the report.

    iPhone 7 Render, Ceramic Back

    iPhone 7 Render, Ceramic Back?

The only thing that we think will be true in this render, is the lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack, the A10 processor, 12 MP camera, faster TouchID and improved 3D Touch. Apart from that, all the other features will probably not become reality.

Report from Jan 28, 2016 – Apple is said to unveil the next generation of iPhones in September, later this year. There will be two models as has been since that last two years, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. We've heard plenty of rumors and reports regarding the next gen iPhone. Here's another one that adds to the list of iPhone 7 Plus features.

The iPhone 7 Plus will be the larger, more powerful version of the iPhone 7. It is said to include more RAM, a better camera, bigger battery and obviously, a larger 5.5-inch display. The latest report comes from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has had a superb track record with Apple predictions. We've heard stories about Apple using a dual camera setup on a future iPhone from some time now.

According to Ming-Chi Ku o, the iPhone 7 Plus will have a special version that would use a dual-camera setup. It could also feature Sony will manufacture 2x optical zoom and both the lenses used. The structure would include two 12 megapixel cameras, one with optical image stabilization and wide angle view, whereas the other would be a telephoto lens with 2-3x optical zoom.

He also states that only about 30 percent of all iPhone 7 shipments would include the new dual camera setup. This structure will be reserved for a premium version of the iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 7 will only include one sensor.

We're not so sure if Apple will start selling other versions of the iPhone 7 Plus. The company has stuck to introducing only two models every year around September, and we don't think it's about to change anytime soon.

Report from Jan 23, 2016 – According to a new rumor, Apple will be including wireless Earpods with the upcoming iPhone 7 and other iPhone 7 features.

In anot her report last year, Japanese blog Macotakara stated that Apple will get rid of the 3.5 mm headphone port in the new iPhone 7.

iPhone 7 Specs, Features and Design

Apart from having no 3.5 mm headphone port, the next gen iPhone is supposed to feature the latest A10 processor and 3GB of RAM. It should also have an even improved camera, better screen, and bigger battery. Reports suggest that Apple could make the new iPhones waterproof, allowing for underwater photography. A Touch ID that's fused with the display has also been rumored, but all that is only predictions.

iPhone 7 Could Feature a Second Speaker

According to a research memo by the Barclays group, Apple may be planning to replace the 3.5mm headphone jack with a second speaker.

We've heard plenty of rumors about how Apple is all set to get rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7 to make it slimmer. You would have to use a Lightning compatible earphone or a wireless Bluetooth headset to l isten to music or make calls.

A second speaker instead of the 3.5mm jack would be a good move, and help improve audio on new iPhones. The new speaker will be powered by a second amplifier provide by Cirrus Logic, according to the firm. The analysts also stated that Apple would most definitely include Lightning equipped earphones with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

    Dual-Lens

The rumored dual-lens hardware could be based on LinX technology, in return, it can lead to brighter and clearer DSLR-quality photos along with other advantages.

LinX's multi-aperture cameras pack impressive image quality in a smaller size than single-aperture cameras, meaning the iPhone 7 Plus could also lack a protruding camera lens.

iPhone 7 Design Update: No Rear Camera Bump and No Antenna Bands

The upcoming iPhone 7 design will be slightly different and better than the current iPhone 6 and 6s models, says a new report.

For the most part, the iPhone 7 will look similar to the iPhone 6 and 6s. It is said to feature the same aluminum unibody design, same display sizes and the rounded edges that we're so used to now. A recent patent by Apple showed that the company could be working on a new camera tech that would help lose the camera bump on the new iPhones.

The iPhone 6 and 6s have an ugly camera bump at the back, which is a problem when you're laying the phone flat on its back. Now, another report from MacRumors coincides with the patent filing and states that Apple will indeed lose the camera bulge in iPhone 7.

iPhone 7 Design Update No Camera Bump and Antenna

iPhone 7 Design Update No Camera Bump and Antenna

The website has received word from a reliable source that the rear camera on the iPhone 7 will sit flush with the back. This is for the iPhone 7, says the report, and that the iPhone 7 Plus could feature a dual-camera setup. There were rumors that Apple might include a new dual-camera setup on the larger iPhone 7 Plus.

Also, the source has revealed that the iPhone 7 will not feature the ugly antenna lines found in the current iPhone 6/6s/6 and 6s Plus. The back of the iPhone will have no antenna lines, giving it a neat all metal look. Apple will, however, retain the antenna bands present on the top and sides of the device.

Apple is said to unveil the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in September this year, so there's plenty of time. There will be more rumors, leaks and reports, but so far, here's what we know. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will have Apple A10 processors, more RA M, improved cameras, possibly a dual camera setup on the 7 Plus model, bigger batteries and will lack the headphone jack.

    Camera Bump to be removed

Report from Jan 31, 2016 – The Apple iPhone 6 and all the models after have had a hideous camera bulge at the back. This is because the phone is slimmer than the camera module.

For many, this is a problem as the phone won't lay flat on its back and the lens cover could be damaged. Both the iPhone 6 and the 6s have the camera bulge. That may change with future iPhones, and Apple may finally get rid of the bulge.

Thanks to the new patent application filed by Apple, a spherical lens will reduce the thickness of the camera module. This would make it possible for a slim smartphone to have a non-protruding camera lens.

The patent is titled "Small form factor high-resolution camera" and states that the distance between the CMOS sensor and the lens can be reduced by using a curved sensor. It's a very c ool idea and is already being used in astronomical telescopes. To use this on a small smartphone specific camera would be difficult, but is still possible.

iPhone 7 Rumor: Apple Patent to remove smartphone camera

iPhone 7: Apple Patent to remove camera bump from future smartphones…

Despite being thinner than a traditional setup, the camera will produce higher quality and sharper images. The curved would also be able to capture more light and provide better images at night.

This lens system could have an aperture of f/1.8 or less. The total axial length of the setup is proposed to be less than 2 mm. Such a structure is said to cause distorted images due to chromatic aberration, but Apple claims it can fix that by adding another lens.

Apple could end up using this new camera module in a future iPhone, but don't expect to see it in the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 will most likely feature an improved camera, but nothing of this sort and we believe the bulge will still be there.

A patent application doesn't always mean that it'll become a reality. Apple files thousands of patents, but only a few make it to the actual products. You can read more about this patent via the source link.

iPhone 7 No headphone jack, Wireless EarPods?

Without the 3.5 mm headphone port, Apple would be able to reduce further the thickness of their next device. The Lightning port will be used as a headphone port for Lightning-compatible headphones. It would also be used for charging the device, as it has been used since the iPhone 5. But what if you wanted to listen to music while c harging your device?

    iphone_7_rumors_features-release-date-no-jack

iPhone 7 Rumors: No headphone jack

Well, the latest rumor suggests that Apple will make the EarPods wireless, probably use Bluetooth to connect them to the iPhone 7. That and lightning supported headphones will be required if you want to listen to music on the new iPhones. This information comes from Apple suppliers who're familiar with the company's plans for the next iPhone.

Apple could also, who knows, pack one of Beats wireless earphones with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. That would be easier than designing an all new wireless ear pods. Then again, wireless EarPods would be much better, don't you think?

An adapter for converting regular headphones to Lightning-enabled ones will also be availab le from Apple.

Why India Could Be The New China For Smartphone Companies

China's GDP growth, swelling middle class, and sheer number of young people have added up to a very lucrative market for Apple. Sales in Greater China jumped 84% during Apple's fiscal year 2015—the fastest growth of any region by far—and CEO Tim Cook has said it's on track to become "Apple's top market in the world."

Clearly, Apple's investments in the region have been paying dividends, and a new report from Morgan Stanley suggests the company could replicate the same success in India.

India is poised to overtake the US to become the second-largest smartphone market behind China in 2017. As a result, tech companies like Facebook and Google have been racing to get their products in front of Indians as growth stalls in their more mature markets.

Experts have found that India's smartphone market has a number of parallels to China's market five to six years ago.

India's smartphone market has a number of parallels to China's market five to six years ago. In 2011, 92 million smartphones were shipped in China; in 2015, 104 million smartphones were shipped in India. In November 2009, a survey from Morgan Stanley found that 4.6% of Chinese respondents owned an iPhone; in January 2016, a similar survey conducted by the firm found 4% of Indians owned a smartphone. From 2010 to 2015, Apple grew its market share of $400-plus smartphones from 30% to 74%. "We think Apple could repeat its same success in India," says Morgan Stanley in the April 20 report.

One fascinating takeaway from Morgan Stanley's survey of 2,626 smartphone buyers in India is that nearly half of the respondents are not familiar with the Apple brand. Out of 12 smartphone companies, Apple ranked 10th in brand awareness, just ahead of Motorola and HTC. Morgan Stanley believes "this means Apple has the most room for upside as our survey shows it could double share in the US$400 [smartphone] segment to 40%."

Of course, that's where Apple ranks among a broad swath of Indian smartphone users, who on the whole are more price sensitive. But among respondents who are willing to spend at least $400 for a smartphone, 41% said they've purchased an iPhone. Like in China, Apple is an "aspirational" brand with pricetags that are out of reach for most Indians. According to the survey, 21% of consumers who plan to buy a non-Apple smartphone would choose a second-hand iPhone if it were available. Apple benefits little from second-hand sales—the exception being app and services revenue or if owners upgrade to new Apple devices down the line—but the report suggests the company could serve these customers by refurbishing or rebuilding devices for sale in India.

To follow China's trajectory though, Apple would have to ramp up its presence in India by opening up stores in the country, partnering with local wireless operators, adding more local content and software, and increasing its marketing. Apple may already be on its way to taking that first step, with recent reports suggesting it could soon receive regulatory approval to open its first retail store in India.

YouTube Releases New Six Second Bumper Ads Format For Mobile Devices

    youtube-new

Advertisers have always had a problem with user retention for their linger ad formats on Youtube, since users generally skip the same after 5 seconds. Responding to the same, YouTube has launched a new compact 6-second version of it's full-length TrueView Adverts, called Bumper Ads.

For those unfamiliar with TrueView Advertising, these are the longer video ads which can be skipped after 5 seconds. Users however, won't be able to skip the new bumper ads, as they are just six seconds long.

Zach Lupei, Product Manager Video Ads, in a blogpost says that YouTube had been looking to expand and explore other Ad formats, to focus more on the youth, who view most of the videos on their hand-held device, be it a smartphone, or an iPad. The shift in viewership has been seen due to the control, personalisation and the ease, thatmobile apps offer.

YouTube believes that the Bumper Ad's work best when used alongside the TrueView offering, where the brand can represent their vision in a larger full-lenth ad, but capture the interest of a much wider audience using shorter bumper ads on mobile devices.

This new six-second Ad feature has been tested out by Atlantic Records, to advertise the second album of the band, Rudimentals, and to showcase the plethora of collaborations occurring on the project. A similar approach was used by Audi, who also tried the bumper ads to demonstrate their latest release, the Audi Q Series SUV's.

Zach Lupei, in the blogpost also mentions that,

We like to think of Bumper ads as little haikus(shorter version) of video ads – and we're excited to see what the creative community will do with them.

The marketers will be able to try the Bumper Ads for their brands, starting May 2016.

With a short interest span, six second long ads would be the perfect addition alongside other longer and versatile ad networks on the platform. In a scenario, where the youth is headed to a more connect and device-oriented future, bumper ads are just the first step towards more ad formats that will sprout to boost sales. Snapchat has also been using their mobile app to allow brands like, Tastemade, MTV, and Discovery to advertise on their platform using short 10-second video clips.

Sirin Labs Snags $72 Million Funding For New Handset That Combines Everyday Smartphone And Military Features

SIRIN LABS, a British-Israeli start-up, has managed to raise a whopping $72 million in funding from private investors so that it can bring the "Rolls-Royce of smartphones" to consumers.

Dubbed the "Solarin," the robust Android-powered handset from the company is an amalgamation of basic smartphone and military features.

Founded in 2013, SIRIN LABS is the brainchild of Kenges Rakishev (a Kazakh entrepreneur), Tal Cohen (ex McKinsey consultant) and Moshe Hogeg (Israeli venture capitalist and brains behind Mobli and Yo).

It currently boasts 100 employees, out of which 75 percent are based in Sirin Labs' R&D base in Tel Aviv, Israel. The remaining employees are located across London, U.S., Switzerland and Sweden. The team hopes to perfectly combine expertise on design and security in order to get a good chunk of the secure phone market.

On Monday, the start-up revealed that it had successfully raised $72 million in private funds for launching the Solarin smartphone. The pumping of the new capital comes courtesy of Renren, a Chinese social networking platform, which joins the seed investment funders Singulariteam (owned by Hogeg) and Rakishev.

"Tel Aviv is a high-tech epicentre built around internet security, anti-virus software and cyber-defence technologies, and Sweden is a nucleus for some of the best telecomms engineers, designers and computer scientists in the world," Hogeg said.

"(Our) smartphone . . . brings the most advanced technology available - even if it is not commercially available - and combining it with almost military-grade security," said Hogeg, SIRIN LABS' co-founder and president.

Hogeg also shed some light on the mysterious smartphone's future and disclosed that the Solarin would debut in May. The company will also be launching a retail store next month in London. The Android smartphone will be sold worldwide through SIRIN LABS' online portal. The start-up also has plans of opening more stores spread across North America, Europe and Asia by end 2016.

An exact date for the Solarin's launch is not known; however, it is expected to be end May and not May 17 as previously assumed.

For those wondering how the Solarin would be priced, the handset will cost you a pretty penny as Hogeg has let on that it will retail around the $10,000 to $15,000 mark. The co-founder is optimistic that several executives in Europe and the U.S. will gravitate towards the smartphone and shell out the money because of the privacy settings it will bring.

In Hogeg's opinion, paying a high price for the Solarin to stay secure would be viewed as a better alternative to compromising privacy and data if one's phone is hacked.

While the Solarin will run on the Android OS, it will also be based on unnamed technology which is at least two to three years ahead of its time. Whether the Solarin will be able to carve a niche for itself - despite the steep price point - when it launches next month remains to be seen.

Rogers and Fido Will Carry the Huawei GR5

We always look forward to a new smartphone release in Canada, even if it is more of a midrange device regarding specifications.  Unfortunately, we will not see the new Huawei P9 finding its way to Canada, but we will eventually see the Huawei GR5, which features the same specs as the Honor 5X, thanks to Rogers and Fido.  The device, announced in January 2016 and released in February, has no firm date of arrival or pricing.

Huawei claims their new GR5 is for the "Fun-Seeker."  It is your typical Huawei device – which means a well-designed smartphone that gives you some bang for your buck.  Even with the GR5's mid-specs, you still get an all-metal aluminum/magnesium alloy body that looks the part of a more premium device.  The unique rear-mounted fingerprint sensor acts as a multifunctional interactive touch sensor.  With a single tap, you can unlock the phone, take a photo, or answer a phone call.  The Huawei GR5 sports a 5.5-inch Full HD (FHD) IPS LCD display, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and 401 pixels per inch (PPI).  The GR5's smart light sensor detects changes in light and its Apical Assertive Display automatically adjusts the dynamics.

The Huawei GR5 uses a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 MSM8939v2 octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 1.2GHz and four cores clocked at 1.5GHz and uses an Adreno 405 GPU.  It packs 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 16GB of internal memory that is expandable via a microSD card.  The primary camera is 13MP with autofocus, an aperture of f/2.0, and LED flash.  It uses digital image stabilization, digital zoom, HDR, scene mode, and many more features.  The front facing camera (FFC) is 5MP for shooting selfies and video chatting. The Huawei GR5 has the usual suspects – WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, NFC, and built-in FM radio.  A 3000mAh non-removable battery provides power.  It has speakers mounted at the bottom of the device.  It measures 151.3 x 76.3 x 8.15 mm and weighs in at 158 grams.   It comes in White, Gray, or Silver.

As more information comes in, we will keep you updated on availability and pricing of the Huawei GR5 as it makes its way to Rogers and Fido.  The GR5 is certainly not your typical mid-range – we hope that pricing will be kind.
