"Now it's finally launched the software for developers to use-along with rolling out the first apps to make use of it. The idea behind CareKit is for developers to build new apps that make it easier for patients to collect data about their health, log their symptoms, and share information with medics and carers".
While the market is already flooded with hundreds of health-related apps, Apple feel the need to leave their mark on a new ecosystem of treatment programs. It is aimed at personal care rather than medical research, a framework that developers can use to create apps for individuals to manage their own healthcare with. With all this functions the app will also help the patient to share the information to the respective people directly from the app. Beth Isreal Deaconess is working on an app for chronic condition management, the University of Rochester is developing a Parkinson's tool, Texas Medical Center is developing care coordination tools, and Cleveland Clinic is working on a CareKit app for asthma and COPD patients. They can share the information with their doctors, other family members, their midwife, and even babysitters. Its application, Start, is now updated with CareKit features that let users take a depression test, track their progress and what side effects they're exper iencing, and decide if an antidepressant is working for them. Goetz said his company is also developing back-end software for medical offices that will comply with federal confidentiality rules.
While many standalone health apps will be created with CareKit, the real power of the framework lies in creating apps that communicate with larger healthcare systems. "They're trying to understand which ones are valid tools and which aren't necessarily useful", he said.
According to Apple Insider, Apple announced its CareKit platform in March, presenting it as a smaller scale open-source tool similar to the ResearchKit, Apple's other open source framework.
CareKit is open-source and now available on GitHub, so other developers can tap into its features for their own health care apps.
The company touted the platform last month, saying that it will assist coders in crafting better health apps to fit devices that run on iOS. Do you think it is a leap forward in the health industry? "When you look at CareKit, HealthKit, the whole focus is to continue to grow that ecosystem and just have more offerings out there and have the best possibilities for consumers out there", Zino said.
