Samsung replaces mobile chief as smartphone lead dwindles

Samsung appointed a new mobile president at Samsung Electronics for the first time in six years after growth stalled at the world's largest smartphone maker.

The Samsung Group conglomerate said Tuesday that Koh Dongjin was promoted to president. He will replace Shin Jong-kyun as the head of the mobile business at its flagship company Samsung Electronics starting next year. The change was announced as part of annual management reshuffle at South Korea's top conglomerate.

Samsung Electronics' smartphone sales lead has been dwindling in the face of competition from Apple Inc. in the premium market and Chinese companies in cheaper devices. The management change comes as Lee Jae-yong, the only son of ailing Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee, takes a bigger role in Samsung after his father suffered a heart attack in May last year.

Shin will step away from day-to-day operations and focus on long-term strategies. He keeps his title of CEO of the IT and mobile division that encompasses phone, network and computer businesses.

Koh, an engineer, was an executive vice president leading mobile research and development.

Samsung said he led the development of two flagship smartphones released this year, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5. He was also behind development of the Samsung Pay mobile payments system.

Shin became the head of mobile in 2010. Three years later, Samsung was the world largest smartphone supplier despite being a latecomer behind Apple.

But in the past year, Samsung's global smartphone market share has dwindled to less than one quarter and its quarterly mobile profit shrank to less than half of its best quarters.

Tepco Arms Fukushima Crawler With Commercial Smartphone

The latest crawler robot to be dispatched inside the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was armed with a standard-issue smartphone as its communication and image-taking device.

Tokyo Electric Power Co., or Tepco, designed the new crawler itself. Its body was created with a 3-D printer and is compact enough to move through a 13-centimeter wide space, the company said.

The crawler was sent Thursday to explore inside reactor No. 3, where nearly all the nuclear fuel was found to have melted down following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The robot was to take pictures of the interior and confirm the damage to one of the hatches on the containment vessel.

"We needed the machine to be compact, so we used a commercially available smartphone. The latest models are inexpensive but come with necessary features, including a camera, GPS and communication system," a spokesman said.

The smartphone was placed on the crawler's arm, which can move to capture images of both the roof and the floor. The crawler can climb over bumps smaller than 5 centimeters, the company said.

Tepco didn't say which brand of smartphone it used.

Similar robots have entered Fukushiima Daiichi previously, including some which succeeded in offering a glimpse of what inside the containment vessels look like. The vessels are highly contaminated with radiation.

The government last month granted its first compensation award to a construction worker at Fukushima, acknowledging that his leukemia could have been caused by radiation exposure.

LG restructures leadership after smartphone slump

lg-v10-2970-001.jpg

2015 was a bad year for LG smartphone sales.

Josh Miller/CNET

LG Electronics on Thursday enacted a major leadership shakeup that will see the company headed up by three representative directors. It hopes that the new directors will "strengthen the company as it enters the new year."

Control of the company will be split three ways between Jo Seong-jin, president and CEO of Home Appliances & Air Solutions, Juno Cho, president and CEO of Mobile Communications and David Jung, president and CFO. The restructuring is designed to make each of the component parts of LG more nimble and quicker to respond to market conditions.

The healthiest business areas for LG, according to its latest financial results are TV sales, which have experienced a resurgence over the last few months, as well as home appliances and vehicles components. Smartphones, though, are struggling.

LG needs to work out how to jump back onto the up escalator after poor smartphone sales this summer led to a 37 percent decl ine in net income from summer 2014, it reported in October. The challenge will now be tapping into new growth areas and allowing them room to flourish.

The South Korean tech conglomerate is split into four different businesses -- home entertainment, mobile communications, home appliances and vehicle components -- which will all gain more autonomy following the restructure.

LG expects its next high-growth areas to be energy, IT, B2B and its automotive business, according to a press release announcing the management changes. Freeing up these businesses will allow them more of an opportunity to excel independently without getting bogged down with the poorer performing areas.

LG isn't the only company struggling to get consumers enthused about smartphones the way they used to be. Samsung and Sony have also suffered from falling smartphone sales and making mobiles is no longer the fail-safe option for boosting profits.

Strong smartphone growth in saturated cellphone market, says IC Insights

Strong smartphone growth in saturated cellphone market, says IC Insights

Press release, November 25 [Wednesday 25 November 2015]

According to IC Insights, 89% of the new cellphones sold worldwide in 2015 are forecast to be replacements or additional cellphones sold to existing subscribers. Moreover, this percentage is forecast to rise to 91% in 2016 and to 94% in 2019, which means that only about 6% of 2019 handset sales are expected to be to new customers. This very high replacement sales rate is similar to the situation that already exists in the US automotive industry.

In the future, it will become increasingly critical for cellphone suppliers to convince the existing subscriber base that it needs, and is worth paying a premium for, the newest technology (usually a smartphone) or that it needs more than one handset. If in the future a large portion of existing cellular users become "satisfied" with their cellphones (as happened in 2002 and 2009), it would serve to lengthen the replacement period and have the potential to significantly decrease annual cellphone unit shipment growth rates, IC Insights said.

The vast majority of existing cellphone subscribers upgrade their phones to some version of a smartphone. Smartphones accounted for over 50% of total quarterly cellphone shipments for the first time ever in the first quarter of 2013 and are forecast to reach 410 million units in fourth-quarter 2015 and represent 80% of total cellphones shipped that quarter. On an annual basis, smartphones first surpassed the 50% penetration level in 2013 (54%) and are forecast to represent 95% of total cellphone shipments in 2019, IC Insights indicated.

In contrast to smartphones, total cellphone handset shipments are forecast to decline by 1% in 2015 and grow by only 2% in 2016, IC Insights noted. Non-smartphone cellphone sales dropped by 24% in 2014 and are expected to drop by another 30% in 2015. Moreover, IC Insights forecasts that the 2016 non-smartphone cellphone unit shipment decline will be similar to 2015's drop with a decline of 28%.

Samsung and Apple dominated the smartphone market in 2014 and are expected to do so again in 2015. In total, these two companies shipped 504 million smartphones and held a combined 40% share of smartphone shipments in 2014, IC Insights said. However, although these two companies are forecast to ship 560 million smartphones in 2015, their combined smartphone unit market share is expected to drop one percentage point to 39%.

Samsung's total cellphone unit shipments are forecast to drop by 1% in 2015. Moreover, its 2015 smartphone shipments are expected to grow by only 5%, a weak showing in a market that is forecast to grow 13% in 2015. With a surge in orders for Apple's new iPhone 6s, Apple's smartphone shipments are expected to jump by 20% in 2015, much better than the total 13% growth rate for the worldwide smartphone market. It appears that Samsung is losing smartphone market share to the up-and-coming China-based producers like Huawei and Xiaomi while Apple continues to dominate the high-end smartphone segment, IC Insights suggested.

In contrast to the forecast double-digit declines in smartphone sales of Microsoft/Nokia and Sony in 2015, smartphone sales from most of the top China-based suppliers are expected to surge, IC Insights said. Combined, the seven top-12 smartphone suppliers that are based in China are forecast to ship 437 million smartphones in 2015, a 23% increase from the 355 million smartphones these seven companies shipped in 2014. As a result, the top-7 China-based smartphone suppliers together are expected to hold a 31% share of the worldwide smartphone market in 2015, up 3pp from the 28% share these companies held in 2014 and 9pp better than the 22% combined share these companies held in 2013, IC Insights said.

Smartphones may have role in 8.1% rise of U.S. traffic deaths

Mark Rosekind: "The increase in smartphones in our hands is so significant, there's no question that has to play some role."

November 24, 2015 - 3:46 pm ET -- UPDATED: 11/25/15 11:08 am ET - corrected

Editor's note: Because of incorrect information on NHTSA's news release, an earlier version of this story mischaracterized a death rate. Last year's rate was 1.07 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The number of deaths from traffic accidents in the U.S. jumped 8.1 percent in the first half of 2015, suggesting smartphones and other driving distractions could be making America's roadways more dangerous.

Preliminary government statistics, released during a Thanksgiving holiday week known for heavy traffic congestion, showed deaths rising to 16,225 in the January-June period at a rate more than double an increase in overall driving spawned by falling gasoline prices and a growing economy.

"The increase in smartphones in our hands is so significant, there's no question that has to play some role. But we don't have enough information yet to determine how big a role," said Mark Rosekind, who heads the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal government's auto safety watchdog.

The jump in 2015 fatalities follows a decline in annual traffic deaths to 32,675 last year, for a record low of 1.07 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, according to NHTSA statistics. The 2014 data included 21,022 passenger vehicle deaths, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1975.

But the increase in the first half of 2015 was the biggest six-month jump in traffic deaths reported since 1977, according to statistics. Officials cautioned that semi-annual results can be subject to major revisions and noted that a comparable 7.9 percent increase in early 2012 led to a 4 percent rise for that year as a whole.

Officials said it was too early to identify contributing factors. But Rosekind told reporters that officials are looking at likely causes including distracted driving and the possibility lower gas prices have encouraged more driving among "risky drivers" such as teenagers.

Rosekind also criticized an absence of effective state laws that prohibit hand-held smartphones by drivers or require the use of seatbelts and motorcycle helmets.

The auto safety agency expects to unveil a program next year to target $500 million in federal safety grants at human factors that are responsible for 94 percent of motor vehicle crashes.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Release Date & Specs: New Flagship Smartphone Coming Out on Feb. 22? Firmware in the Works?

First Posted: Nov 23, 2015 07:11 PM EST

The rumor mill for Samsung Galaxy S7 release date continues to churn out interesting details. Believed to be launched earlier than the usual release schedule of its predecessors, the Galaxy S7 is arriving first quarter of next year.

According to Android Origin, there are several rumored release dates for the Samsung Galaxy S7. One of them suggests that the next-gen smartphone from South Korean tech giant will arrive sometime this January, primarily because of the company's switch to Agile development.

Some believe the Samsung Galaxy S7 release date will happen ahead of the tech company's Unpacked 2016 event. However, the report also noted the possibility that the rumored Samsung device will arrive on Feb. 22 or Feb. 25.

The mentioned dates are the supposed release schedule for the smartphone's firmware, which is reportedly in development. However, this detail about the simultaneous launch for the Galaxy S7 and its firmware should be taken by tech enthusiasts with a grain of salt until Samsung releases its official announcement for the device.

It is also possible that there could be two variants for the phone, one that sports a normal screen while the other one features a curved display, Android Origin noted. This is supported by a previous report from Techno Buffalo, which noted that AT&T has been testing the smartphone, specifically the two variants with model numbers SM-G935A and SM-G930.

Accordingly, these model numbers refer to a traditional Samsung Galaxy S7 and a possible successor to Galaxy S6 Edge. After comparing the model numbers from the available devices now, it suggested that the SM-G935A will be the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which will feature the curved glass display. SM-G930A will be the standard variant, on the other hand.

As for the Galaxy S7 specs, Latin Post previously reported the possible specs of the Samsung Galaxy S7. Accordingly, the 2016 flagship device might have a 4k display plus a 20-MP primary camera.

Android Origin further shared that the panel size of the phone could be between 5.2 and 5.7 inches. The flagship device is also reportedly getting two different processors namely the Snapdragon 820 and the Exynos 8890, rumored to become available under different Galaxy S7 versions.

Comparing it to the current Samsung offering, the Samsung Galaxy S6, with model number SM-G920 sports a 5.1-inch screen with 1440 x 2560 pixels and pixel density of 577 ppi. The Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is powered by Exynos 7420 chipset. As for the OS, the smartphone can now be officially upgraded to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

This new Smartphone app can help you track and check famines

Scientists have developed a way to monitor food security using a smartphone app, which combines weather and soil moisture data from satellites with crowd-sourced data on the vulnerability of the population to malnutrition and other relevant socio-economic data.

Drought and crop failure can often be predicted by monitoring the weather and measuring soil moisture. But other risk factors, such as socio-economic problems or violent conflicts, can endanger food security too.

For organisations such as Doctors without Borders (MSF), it is crucial to obtain information about vulnerable regions as soon as possible, so that they have a chance to provide help before it is too late.

The system developed by scientists at Vienna University of Technology and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria, has yielded promising results during tests in the Central African Repub lic.

"Today, smartphones are available even in developing countries, and so we decided to develop an app, which we called SATIDA COLLECT, to help us collect the necessary data," said IIASA-based app developer Mathias Karner.

The digital questionnaire of SATIDA COLLECT can be adapted to local eating habits, as the answers and the GPS coordinates of every assessment are stored locally on the phone.

When an internet connection is available, the collected data are uploaded to a server and can be analysed along with satellite-derived information about drought risk.

In the end a map could be created, highlighting areas where the danger of malnutrition is high.

For Doctors without Borders, such maps are extremely valuable. They help to plan future activities and provide help as soon as it is needed.

The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.(Image: Thinkstock)

Leggings with a smartphone pocket are just what your workout needs

What's This?

Gone are the days of chunky armbands and awkwardly stuffing your phone in the waistband of your pants during your workout routine.

Lume Lifestlye — a small apparel company that aims to combine fashion with technology — created leggings with a "smart pocket" to hold your phone while you exercise.

The Kickstarter campaign launched Friday with a goal of $10,000 in 34 days.

lume3

The mesh smart pocket keeps your phone safe while you exercise.

Lume co-founder Waira Mungai tells Mashable that the creation of Lume Smart Leggings was inspired by his own 125 pound weight loss.

"Growing up, I was obese. By the time I was in high school, I weighed 290 lbs., and I was extremely depressed. [In] 2009, after ripping my last pair of jeans, I decided I was going to transform my life no matter what," Mungai recalls.

After losing weight, Mungai says he still struggled with depression, but decided to dedicate his life towards helping others find happiness by becoming a personal trainer.

"One day, while waiting for a client, I noticed a woman put her phone in her waistband. She started exercising, and her phone fell to the floor. That observation led me on a journey that ultimately formed [our] female focused inspirational brand."

In addition to holding your phone, the Lume smart pocket allows you to text through the touch responsive mesh covering and has just enough space at the top of the pocket for your headphone cord to fit through — so you can still listen to Hotline Bling as you run tirelessly on the treadmill.

"Our product makes modern life for the active woman convenient," Mungai says. "[Lume] is made to fit every phone. [It] allows men and women to seamlessly interact with their smartphones without removal from their pockets."

The leggings feature a no-slip waistband, petite sizing for shorter women, moisture wicking fabric and a four way stretch.

Lume was designed to be interactive, yet secure for your phone.

Inspired by his personal journey and desire to help others transform their lives, his company's name was derived from the world luminous, which means to emit light.

The creation of the Lume legging's product took just over eight months and over a dozen prototypes.

Men can wear Lume Smart Leggings as well.

Although Lume is marketed towards women, Mungai says men can wear the leggings as well. He says he often wears shorts over them to keep them from being too revealing.

While the smart pocket on the leggings is located on the front of the right thigh, Mungai says Lume will eventually release a lefthand version of the pants.

Lume Smart Leggings will eventually be available for purchase on Lume's website. The machine washable leggings will sell for $88 and will include plus sizes.

In the future, Lume hopes to release cropped leggings, shorts and joggers for both men and women.

LG Launches Mid-Range ‘LG Ray’ Smartphone In Russia

South Korean consumer electronics company, LG, has reportedly launched a brand new mid-range smartphone in Russia called the LG Ray. The device is priced at 14,990 Rubles in the country, which translates to about $232 in US currency. According to the press release from the company, the device is going to be offered in two different colors – Black and Gold. It remains to be seen how well the smartphone is received by the media and the paying customers in the country, but just the one look at the spec-sheet is probably enough to tell you that it isn't exactly the most powerful handset in its class. It is however worth remembering that hardware specs alone do not a phone make, so it could still turn out to be a decent enough device for the price depending on what's on offer on the software side of things.

As per the listing of the device on LG's official Russian site, the Ray features a 5.5-inch display with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The handset is powered by a MediaTek MT6592M SoC, which comes with an octa-core application processor clocked at a maximum frequency of 1.4 GHz. As for the available RAM, the LG Ray comes with only 1 GB of it, along with 16 GB of built-in storage capacity. That however, can be expanded by up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card, thanks to the presence of an expansion slot within the phone. As for the available imaging options on the LG Ray, the phone comes with a 13-megapixel rear-facing primary camera that supports 1080p video recording. The front-facing selfie-cam on the handset meanwhile, comes with a rather large 8-megapixel sensor, keeping in line with the recent trend of ever-larger sensors for selfie duties, meaning the phone is well and truly targeted at the young and the young at heart.

Finally, coming to the battery, the device carries a 3,000 mAh unit, which should be decent enough for the chipset and a 720p display, even though it's a fairly large one. There's no word on the Android version that's pre-loaded on the device, but either version of Lollipop would probably be a good guess. It remains to be seen how the Russian market receives this phone, and also, if LG will decide to expand the availability of the handset globally at some stage in the future.

Have Butterfingers? How to Tell If Smartphone Insurance Is Worth It

Image: A smartphone with a cracked screen lays on the ground

A smartphone with a cracked screen lays on the ground after a drop test from the DropBot, a robot used to measure the resilience of phones to dropping, in San Francisco on Aug. 26. Ben Margot / AP

Like any type of investment, it's about your risk tolerance. If you damaged your phone tomorrow could you go out and buy a new one — even at full price?

With a two-year contract the iPhone 6S 16 GB costs $199, but if you damage or lose your phone before the two years is up you must pay the full $650 for a replacement.

How You're Most Likely to Break Your Phone

"That is what a lot of people miss at times," Gjertsen said. If you're good with the cost, then you are more than likely good without insurance.

But if you are a habitual phone breaker and don't want to cough up $650, it's probably a good idea to cover yourself. If you don't fall into either camp or just aren't sure, here are some things to consider:

"I think the case for insurance is threefold: to protect your investment, protect against Murphy's Law and also to help you stay connected to your world if something does happen," explained Matthew Pufall, product director at Protect Your Bubble.

If you are thinking about getting your phone insured, "the details are incredibly important because what you are paying for and what you think you might be covered for could be two totally different things," warns Gjertsen. For example, under most insurance plans, you're covered if you totally destroy your phone, but if your screen cracks, that's out of pocket.

When it comes to insurance, there are two basic options:

Your carrier

You could get phone insurance through your phone carrier, but plans vary with each provider. For

AT&T, insurance is $6.99 a month and offers coverage for loss, theft, accidental damage or out-of-warranty malfunction of your phone. It will provide you with a replacement as soon as the next day and you can make two claims within a 12-month period for a total of $1,500. Could Apple's Newest Patent Waterproof Your Phone? Verizon offers coverage if your device is lost, stolen, damaged (including liquid damage) or defective after the manufacturer warranty expires for $9 a month. You can file two claims within any consecutive 12 months with a maximum value of $400 to $1,500, depending on the device.

For $9 to $13 a month,

Sprint offers coverage against loss, theft, and liquid or physical damage with the ability to file three claims within 12 months for a total of $1,500. T-Mobille's JUMP! provides coverage against accidental damage, malfunction due to mechanical breakdown, loss or theft for $10 a month. T-Mobile allows you to make two claims each year with a limit of $1,500 for each loss. Outside provider

Using an outside provider is another option to insure your phone. Protect Your Bubble, for example, offers coverage for $5.99 a month in case of mechanical breakdowns, water and liquid damage and even cracked screens. There is no limit on number of claims and if an exact replacement is not available, the company will issue a check for the replacement value, minus the deductible.

SquareTrade insures for mechanical and electrical failures and accidental damage but not theft or loss. You can purchase coverage for $4 a month for a three-year plan up to $8 for a month-to-month plan.

You could also insure your phone under your existing homeowners insurance as a valuable personal article for up to $50 a month. However, most home insurance policies have a $1,000 deductible, more than the cost if you went and purchased a new phone.

Buying phone insurance could give you that extra peace of mind knowing that if you drop it, you are covered — just be sure to read the fine print to know what you are covered for and for how much. Paying $12 a month for insurance, not including the cost of a deductible (usually around $150), will quickly start to creep up to the cost of buying a new smartphone.

At the end of the day, it depends on your level of risk tolerance — and tendency toward mishaps — with your most prized possession.

Microsoft Has Lost The Smartphone Battle

Summary

Android and iOS devices now account for 98% of all smartphones shipped.

Microsoft's market share has declined from 3% to 1.7% year on year.

Clearly, it is time for Microsoft to admit that it has lost this battle.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is losing the battle for smartphone market share as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) continue to dominate the scene. The most recent figures indicate that iOS and Android devices now account for 98% of the total smartphone market, which puts Microsoft in an increasingly difficult position as it tries to push its windows devices.

According to Gartner, sales of iOS and Android handsets reached an all-time high in the third quarter of this year with the latter shipping about 298.7 million units, while the former shipped 46 million units during the same period. This was in stark contrast to Microsoft, which shipped 5.8 million Windows Phone devices and ceded market share from 3% to 1.7% on a year-on-year basis.

However, Microsoft has been planning a major comeback on the backdrop of the Windows 10 software for mobile, which is supposed to have a number of features, such as support for Universal Windows Apps and Continuum.

Furthermore, Microsoft's shareholders have been banking on the company's Project Astoria tool, which would allow Android developers to port their apps over to the Windows 10 mobile platform to drive migrations to the platform. Now reports from Microsoft indicate that it will be delaying the release of the Project Astoria tool, which has left many investors wondering how this news is going to play out in the long term.

While it isn't clear whether the tech giant has completely shelved the tool, The Verge recently reported that Microsoft was concerned that the Android apps didn't run well enough through Windows and were also less secure. With one of the most highly anticipated features of Windows 10 mobile taking a backseat right when it matters most, I fear that Microsoft has doomed itself to a laggard position in the smartphone race.

More fumbles in the race

Microsoft has stated that it plans on selling one billion devices (smartphones, tablets, computers) running on the Windows 10 platform over the next three years. Although this goal is highly commendable, I'm of the opinion that the firm should not peg its hope of achieving this goal in large part through mobile sales. This is due to the fact that as it stands, Microsoft has fumbled its mobile strategy and it may be a long while before handsets make a dent on the stated figure.

First, with the launch of the company's two new premium smartphones, the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, most analysts have confirmed their suspicions that Microsoft has given up on the race for the consumer market choosing instead to focus on enterprise customers and I agree with them. Taking the long view on things, this ultimately means that Microsoft's market share in the smartphone industry is headed south, while iOS and Android will continue strengthening their hold.

The reality is that uptake of the new Lumia smartphones is likely to be severely limited to enterprise customers with the Continuum feature being the primary driver for demand as it may offer some cost-saving benefits in that businesses only need to supply their employees with one device that works as a smartphone and a PC.

Also, the fact that Microsoft chose AT&T (NYSE:T) as the exclusive seller of its devices means that the goal of selling one billion devices in three years may need to be revised. Add this to the problems with the launch of Project Astoria tools, the future seems bleaker than before. One thing that deserves some recognition at least is the fact that Windows 10 will allow porting for some iOS apps, which according to reports work better that Android apps.

But still, getting developers to build apps for the Windows 10 mobile platform is proving to be a daunting task, despite the assured compatibility across all devices running the OS. Moreover, as long as Alphabet declines to develop important versions of its leading apps like Gmail and YouTube for Windows 10, the appeal by Microsoft's devices is drastically reduced.

Conclusion

While it's true that Microsoft is in no way hurting for profits right now, revenue from a larger smartphone market share would have done both shareholders and the firm a lot of good. The debate on whether the Lumia division should take a final bow or not to me is not the issue here as there are plenty of more implications to consider.

As a longtime admirer of the company, I can only hope that Microsoft's push for a bigger piece of the market share will not end up bleeding its cash pile like what happened to Alphabet's attempt in the smartphone hardware business. I believe that shareholders and the management should reconcile with the fact that this ship sailed long ago and whatever the company does right now won't be changing the game in any way.

Time to embrace smartphone-based apps to aid well-being: Experts

    Prev

    By Agencies |Posted 18-Nov-2015

New Delhi: At a time when the world is witnessing a boom in smartphone-assisted technologies helping healthcare providers, India cannot be lagging behind to give the "health for all" dream a much-needed boost, feel experts.

Physicians the world over are increasingly using smartphone-compatible medical devices to gather crucial health data in an efficient way. These smartphone devices allow patient data to be automatically recorded, stored and transmitted securely. Everything from boosting cancer research to information on sexual preferences is now part of the smartphone revolution.

    Health and wellness appsRepresentational picture

"India is ready for smartphone-assisted health aid. Lots of such apps are already being used here. It will help the needy keep track of their health on a daily basis," Dr Rommel Tickoo, senior consultant (internal medicine) from Max Healthcare in the capital, told IANS.

According to Dr Ashish Bachhav, head of department (cornea refractive) at Vision Sankara Eye hospital in Mumbai, although traditional methods are still the gold standard in diagnosis and treatment, "smartphones-based apps can not only assist in finding nearest health care expert but also store the patients' record in a better way".

Vision Sankara is part of the Sankara Eye Care Institutes in Mumbai and was a segment of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust founded in 1977 in Coimbatore.

"India is ready for smartphone-assisted health aid in the field of neurosurgery and neurological disorders. It has a huge potential to transform neurohealthcare, especially for the rural and semi-urban population of our country," Dr Mohinish Bhatjiwale, director (neurosurgery minimally invasive brain and spine) at Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital in Mumbai, told IANS.

According to a recent research published in American Medical Association's Journal of Ethics, authors Michael A Batista and Shiv M Gaglani emphasise that by providing health information and instructions in a user-friendly interface, smartphone-synced devices empower patients to take an active role in their own health.

"Unlike older generations of at-home monitoring equipment that required manual record keeping, these smartphone devices present that data in comprehensive visual formats such as graphs that convey trends over time," they wrote, suggesting that such apps may ultimately enhance patient engagement.

"Accessibility and availability will soon make it popular among the healthcare providers," adds Dr Rahul Gupta, senior neurosurgeon and spine surgeon from Fortis Healthcare.

"Smartphone-based technology can help early consultation and facilitate better treatment. New modified apps can be trusted once they are tested extensively but it should always be done under the supervision of a good medical practitioner," Dr Gupta added.

Dr Nupur Gupta, gynaecologist and obstetrician and director of the Well Women Clinic in Gurgaon, says in current scenario, "doctors need to be up to date with technology, so we have also started using modern methods of consultations."

According to her, the technology has already moved into the Indian healthcare sector and there are several apps offering online services not only for basic consultations but also for a second medical opinion.

Researchers Batista and Gaglani feel that as smartphone-enhanced medical devices continue to be integrated into patients' lives at home, the next step is clinical adoption.

"Dr Eric Topol (a US-based renowned professor of genomics and the Scripps endowed chair in innovative medicine) who has twice diagnosed arrhythmias on airplanes using a mobile electrocardiogram (ECG) is a leading supporter of smartphone-based healthcare," they wrote.

Mobile physicians, such as those in emergency medicine, will find clear value in portable devices that can, for example, capture focussed assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) images and send them through a smartphone to the hospital ahead of the patient for pre-arrival diagnosis by a physician.

Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh, professor at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, has recently devised a smartphone-based handheld device that will help people detect nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a significant air pollutant.

"The revolutionary method we have developed is a great start to creating a handheld, low-cost and personalised NO2 sensor that can even be incorporated into smartphones," Kalantar-zadeh said in a paper published in the journal ACS Nano..

According to Dr Tickoo, apps can act as better screening tools. "The new-age gadgets and apps can help us know what is going wrong with our health so that we can seek medical advice," he adds.

The new-age technologies can act as an adjunct to the traditional methods and the smartphone-based apps can spread awareness about many ailments, experts sum up.

China market: Xiaomi to unveil new smartphone on November 24

Max Wang, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 18 November 2015]

Xiaomi Technology is expected to unveil its new smartphone the Redmi Note 2 Pro and Mi Pad 2 during a product event to be held on November 24. The product offerings may also include Xiaomi's first notebook model.

The new models come amid market speculations indicating that sales of Xiaomi's smartphones have been lower than expected recently and the vendor's efforts to increase its penetration in the high-end smartphone segment has been jeopardized, according to industry sources.

Xiaomi may ship 70 million smartphones in 2015, falling short of its shipment target of 80 million units set for the year, the sources indicated. Xiao said it shipped 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of 2015, up 33% from a year earlier period.

For overseas market, Xiaomi has shipped only about four million smartphones to the India market since the second half 2014, which were lower than market expectations, said the sources.

Since Xiaomi has been focused on entry-level models, its efforts to move into the high-end segment have been impaired by its brand image, commented the sources.

LG's upcoming G5 smartphone should feature metal unibody, out in 2016

It looks like LG is ready to better compete against the likes of Samsung, Apple and HTC in 2016 with rumors that its G5 smartphone will rock a metal unibody design.

We saw Samsung dive into a full metal unibody design this year, but we also saw the company take away the replaceable battery and microSD card slot. These two omissions are something LG were able to use against Samsung, as their G4 smartphone had a replaceable battery and microSD card slot. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, did not.

With the release of the V10 smartphone recently, LG has been stepping closer and closer to a truly premium smartphone, but I think that the G5 could really deliver with an awesome design, and keep its customers if it can retain the microSD card slot and removeable battery.

Ashton Kutcher proves our smartphone addiction is real in new Motorola ads

    What's This?

    Headshot_2015_karissabell_1

    By Karissa Bell2015-11-16 15:00:49 UTC

Smartphone addiction is real. Just ask Ashton Kutcher.

The TV star-turned-startup investor has teamed up with Motorola on a set of new commercials that spotlight just how dependent we are on our phones.

The spots, which are part of his larger campaign with the company called "#PhoneLove," feature Kutcher leading an experiment that challenges unsuspecting subjects to sit in a room alone without looking at their phones — while Kutcher and company bait them with calls and text messages. Most subjects caved and took out their phones within several minutes, Kutcher says.

"I think the phone has almost become the new refrigerator," Kutcher tells Mashable. "We've all had that experience where we go to our refrigerator and open up the door and we stand there and look inside and then we close the door without ever taking anything out.

"It's crazy, people feel like there's this whole other world on the other side of their phone that they're going to miss out on, and it's almost the same thing with the refrigerator; we feel like we're going open it up and something is going to magically appear that we didn't realize was in there."

Other videos in the campaign test people's smartphone addiction — er, love — by asking questions like, "Would you rather go a day without your phone or text your ex that you're thinking about them?"

The actor, who previously portrayed Steve Jobs in a movie about the Apple cofounder's life, has apparently been a Motorola fan ever since the company made pagers in the '90s. His current deal with the company is an extension of his longtime partnership with Lenovo where he had the role of "product engineer," working on projects like the company's Yoga tablets. Lenovo acquired Motorola last year.

This time, he says his efforts with Motorola will mostly be focused on the company's smartphone business, though it could extend to wearables as well. He says they are thinking about how to make devices that are smarter, faster and better able to anticipate users' needs.

"People are trying to turn their phones into almost like a Swiss army knife, that this one device can do everything. But that the problem with that is that it compromises the user experience in a lot of ways," he says, noting battery life can often suffer at the expense of features. "What we're doing a lot of thinking about in the future is how do we uncouple some of these things that we want our phones to do in a really smart way and make it a more efficient device."

DataWind mulls sub Rs 3,000 4G smartphone, to invest Rs 200 crore in two manufacturing units

NEW DELHI: Canada-based lowcost tablet and smartphone maker Datawind is considering a foray into the affordable 4G device segment by mid-2016 and plans to start two new manufacturing facilities with an initial investment of Rs 200 crore in the country.

"We may work on a sub-Rs 3,000-priced 4G-enabled smartphone next as the 4G market matures in India," Datawind chief executive Suneet Singh Tuli told ET, adding that the company is closely watching the telcos' 4G moves.

Indian telcos are banking heavily on surging data consumption to fuel growth. Besides expanding its 3G services, Bharti Airtel, the country's top telecom operator, has launched 4G services, while No. 2 Vodafone India and No. 3 Idea Cellular will start their high-speed internet services later this year or in early 2016. Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio Infocomm plans to start its 4G services around December.

Datawind shot to fame with an ultra-low-cost Aakash tablet PC debut in 2012 for a governmentbacked in itiative aimed at increasing PC penetration among school children in India. The company's market share in India is close to 50% in the sub-Rs 5,000 tablet category, Tuli said, citing various industry findings. US-based research firm IDC puts Datawind at the third spot, closely behind leader iBall and Samsung, with a share of 13.5% in the overall tablet market in the second quarter of 2015. Datawind is also teaming up with Reliance Communications to launch the world's most affordable smartphone — priced at Rs 999 — by the end of this year.

Tuli said Datawind may talk to both Airtel and Jio for affordablypriced smartphones for device bundling, but feels that it may take at least a year for India's LTE market to grow. He added that mid-2016 would be the right time for the company to introduce 4G-enabled smartphones in the country.

Swipe Technologies recently launched 4G smartphone, Elite 2, at Rs 4,666. The most affordable 4G-enabled smartphones available today include Micromax Yu Yunique, priced at Rs 4,999, Lenovo A2010 at Rs 4,990, ZTE Blade Q Lux 4G at Rs 4,999 and Phicomm Energy 653 at Rs 4,999. Datawind is investing Rs 200 crore to put up two new manufacturing facilities in India by early 2016, where each unit will have a production capacity of 5,000 units a day. It currently manufactures primarily touch panels at its plant in Amritsar, Punjab.

In 2014, the company had raised funds from an initial public offering (IPO) at Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). "We have recently raised Rs 180 crore from the Toronto Stock Exchange and have additional lines of credit and, therefore, we are well poised to start manufacturing in the next six months," Tuli said.
