New Google Nexus 5X priced at Rs 31,900 in India; smartphone packs 5.2-inch screen

Search engine Google is countering the release of Apple's latest devices by unveiling its latest smartphone the Google Nexus 5X priced at Rs 31,900 in India ($379 in the US), which will be made available from mid-October here – the device has a 5.2-inch screen. Needless to say, the smartphone is priced under the posh devices from Apple like the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus – in fact Google has priced it even lower than Samsung's offerings.

Google Nexus 5X, which has been created in partnership with South Korea's LG, looks to showcase the new Google Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS – a new version of Android software designed to steer and document even more of its users' lives. The smartphone is available for order in the US, UK, Japan and Ireland, and countries like India will be added by 15, October.

"In a multiscreen world, it is even more important for Google to do the hard work so the experience is simple and delightful for the users," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said.

The Google Nexus 5X, unveiled at a San Francisco media event, will be sold unlocked and that means those who do not like contracts with telecom companies will not be forced to go to them. Those who are are savings-oriented, therefore, would be willing to pay the full price as in the long run, they will save money.

On the Google Nexus 5X, Google Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS allows fingerprint sensors to unlock the smartphone and packs other features including Android Pay.

While Apple has its own smartphones, the ubiquitous iPhones 6S and iPhone ^S Plus (the latest), Google makes the Android mobile OS and gives it away free to those who make the hardware – the companies across the entire world by now (80% smartphones across globe run on Android). However, through the Nexus smartphone Google looks to control the initial launch and hog the limelight in a not as opulent as Apple-type events.

Google's new Nexus smartphones are worth getting excited about

What's This?

Nexus-phones

Google showed off two new Nexus smartphones Tuesday: the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P.

While some onlookers were skeptical going in to Tuesday's reveal, Google has managed to make two extremely sleek, well-made, yet very different, Android smartphones. They were worth the wait.

Google says the Nexus 6P is the "most premium" Nexus handset the company has had to date, and it shows. The all-metal build makes the phone feel more like a premium flagship than any other Nexus smartphone.

Though its 5.7-inch display is only slightly smaller than its 5.9-inch predecessor, the Nexus 6, the 6P doesn't feel or look nearly as gargantuan. Google almost completely eliminated the bezel so the device itself is several millimeters narrower than the Nexus 6. The overall thickness has also been noticeably reduced. These changes make the 6P feel much more manageable than most phablets out there.

That said, if you have small hands like I do, then there's no amount of design or engineering that can make it easier to operate a close to 6-inch smartphone with one hand. But I was pleasantly surprised by the size overall. Unlike the Nexus 6, the Nexus 6P should slide into most pockets fairly easily and doesn't feel unwieldy when using two hands.

Luckily, with this Nexus launch, Google acknowledged that not everyone wants a phablet-sized device. In a market crowded with giant screens, the Nexus 5X will be a welcome addition — particularly for those still stubbornly hanging onto their now two-year-old Nexus 5 devices.

The LG-made Nexus 5X's 5.2-inch display will hit that sweet spot for many who prefer to stick to the smaller screen. The polycarbonate body is a lot like the backing on Google's Nexus 8 tablet: it feels solid and not overly plasticky. If it was any lighter it would probably start to border on feeling cheap but as it stands it strikes the right balance of lightweight yet solid. The HD 1,920 x 1,080 display is crisp though it looks flat next to the WQHD 2,560 x 1,080 display of the 6P.

Both the Nexus 5X and 6P come with the kind of hardware we've come to expect on a flagship Android smartphone in 2015: a fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C rapid charging and a sweet camera.

At the outset, the most noticeable of these features is the new fingerprint sensor. Both handsets come with identical Nexus Imprint sensors located on the back side of the phone underneath the camera.

It was lightning fast on both devices. Setup required only six taps — significantly faster than adding a fingerprint to Touch ID on the iPhone 6S — and unlocking felt almost instant. The placement of the sensor may throw some people off, but I found it to be quite intuitive once you get used to not using your thumb.

Both smartphones also have the same 1.55µm Sony camera sensor and both have excellent cameras because of it. The 12.3 MP rear camera on the 6P is sharp, responsive and far faster than the camera on the Nexus 6. It also has a few neat tricks: hold down on the shutter to activate a burst mode that fires off shots as long as you hold down the shutter and it also supports 4K video as well as a slow motion video mode. The 8 MP front-facing camera on the 6P is also really good. Photos in dim light were crisp and clear, with surprisingly vivid colors — your Snapchats will never look better.

With identical rear-facing camera sensors, the camera on the 5X is also excellent, though it lacks 4K video support and the burst mode of the 6P. The 5 MP front camera is also really good with an extremely fast shutter.

Both smartphones also come with a quick-charging USB 3.0 port and if there's one hardware improvement that has potential to make your life a lot easier it's this: 10 minutes of charging will buy you almost 4 hours of battery life on the 5X and as much as 7 hours from the 6P, according to Google. We'll have to wait for our review to thoroughly test those claims but if the phones can deliver on even half of that, Google just made charging anxiety a thing of the past.

When you consider the price of both devices — the Nexus 6P starts at $499 and the 5X at $379 — both will be difficult to beat. With the Android market increasingly moving toward low-cost flagships like the OnePlus Two and others, Google's Nexus lineup will easily stand out from many of its competitors.

15 smartphones with 3,000mAh batteries or larger, made to last longer

Some smartphone releases this year have shown us that bigger batteries aren't always going to keep coming. Samsung opted for smaller power cells in its Galaxy S6 than the previous generation – in favour of faster charging. Apple's iPhone 6S Plus has 2,750mAh battery, making it smaller than last year's model.

But some people want to avoid charging as long as possible. Some of us want bigger batteries.

READ: Quick Charge 2.0: What is it and why do you need it?

We've rounded up the big boys in the phone battery world to deliver the phones with truly huge batteries of 3,000mAh or more.

Of course bigger batteries don't always mean longer use, with screen size and processor performance to be taken into account. But generally a larger battery will help. Just look at the larger Sony Xperia Z5 Premium or Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus that can deliver over a day's heavy use easily.

So what smartphones can you buy now with a 3,000mAh battery or larger?

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus: 3,000mAh

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus review: The edge of reason

Pocket-lintP1020796 copy

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus offers more screen than any Samsung before it thanks to that edge to edge curved display. But with a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display power draining is always going to be an issue. That's why Samsung has opted for a hefty 3,000mAh battery in the handset.

This battery isn't the largest but coupled with Samsung's octa-core Exynos processor power consumption is kept to a minimum. This battery is also able to fast charge and even charges quickly wirelessly. In our review a 16-hour day of use still had 15 per cent in the battery at bed time.

OnePlus 2: 3,300mAh

OnePlus 2 review: In a class of its own

Pocket-lintOP2 LEAD WIP copy

OnePlus has taken the world by offering hyper specs at an affordable price. It's also dishing out plenty of battery life in its OnePlus 2 which crams in a 3,300mAh unit.

A 5.5-inch 1080p display chews battery despite the Snapdragon 810 processor efficiency. Yet we still found this handheld powerhouse took just two hours to charge to full. Then it kept going after 24-hours of use with still a good 10 per cent battery remaining.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium: 3,430mAh

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium: Android's new 4K king of bling (hands-on)

Pocket-lintIMG_4527

Sony's latest entrant to the Xperia family carriers a screen like no other smartphone, at a whopping 4K. That's a 5.5-inch LCD IPS running a 3840 x 2160 resolution -  a lot of pixels to power. Hence Sony putting in a hefty 3,430mAh battery in this model.

The handset offers Quick Charge 2.0 and Sony's smart battery saving extras. Sony has added memory to the display, meaning that the CPU can be cut as soon as the display is showing what's needed. The result should be two days of use in Stamina Mode.

Motorola Moto X Play: 3,630mAh

Motorola Moto X Play: Serious cameras for your money (hands-on)

Pocket-lintMoto X Play-001

The Motorola Moto X Play starts at £295 yet offers a 5.5-inch 1080p screen, 21-megapixel camera and - get this - a massive 3,630mAh battery.

The battery combined with octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor can offer, Motorola says, a full 48 hours of use on a charge. It should even be able to fast charge for 8 hours of use in just 15 minutes.

LG G4: 3,000mAh

LG G4 review: A balance of phone meets phablet

Pocket-lintP9970463 copy

LG really pushed the camera tech in its G4 to the limit. But it wasn't solely focused on that as it also squeezed in a hefty 3,000mAh battery to offer the best battery life. But despite a Snapdragon 810 processor the phone still only manages a day on a charge, if that. Not a great battery life leap forward from the G3 then.

Google Nexus 6: 3,220mAh

Nexus 6 review: Highly accomplished, but a bit of a handful

Pocket-lintIMG_1778

Google's largest Nexus smartphone was always going to come with a large battery. Complaints about the Nexus 5 battery life were rife so what better way to keep that energy juicing 6-inch screen on the Nexus 6 alive than by putting in a 3,220mAh battery?

This isn't the largest battery out there but it's plenty big and can be charged faster than most thanks to its Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 compatibility. And, also unlike most, it comes with a fast charger in the box meaning 6-hours use from a 15-minute charge. On a full charge, Google says, it will go all day even with lots of use.

HTC One Max: 3,300mAh

HTC One Max review

Pocket-lintIMG_1029

The HTC One Max, as its name suggests, large with a 5.9-inch display to keep up and running. That's why it's packing a 3,300mAh battery.

According to HTC it can manage 585 hours of 3G standby. Although with the now-dated Snapdragon 600 processor that battery could be used more efficiently by more modern handsets.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5: 3,000mAh

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 hands-on: Classy evolution but no UK launch currently planned

Pocket-lintSamsung Galaxy Note 5-4

Samsung downsized on battery in the Note 5, going to a 3,000mAh unit. It also refraining from releasing the handset in the UK initially.

Nonetheless battery life, with the new Exynos 7 octa-core processor is reportedly better and also offers fast and wireless charging options. Not bad considering it's powering a 5.7-inch QHD display.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7: 4,100mAh

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 review

Pocket-lintDSC_8603 copy

The battery on the Huawei Ascend Mate really is something impressive standing at a whopping 4,100mAh – bigger than most others out there.

The screen is 6-inches meaning plenty of drain but the processor is an octa-core Kirin 925 at 1.8GHz, which is efficient. Add in various battery saving app tweaks and the result is a battery that gives a good two days of use.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL: 3,000mAh

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL review: Budget beauty

Pocket-lintIMG_2851

One of the newest smartphones from Microsoft, unveiled at MWC, is the Lumia 640 XL.

This 5.7-inch Windows Phone packs in a 3,000mAh battery and is coupled with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. Windows Phone handsets have, historically, had decent battery life so one with a battery this size should last a good day at least. Microsoft claims it'll manage 39 days of standby time.

OnePlus One: 3,100mAh

OnePlus One review

Pocket-lintONEPLUS_001

The OnePlus One crams in impressive specs including a 5.5-inch HD display and Snapdragon 801 processor, from just £230. The battery doesn't come up short either with a 3,100mAh offering.

That battery should stretch to a good day and a half of heavy use.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4: 3,220mAh

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review

Pocket-lintphp43drki

Samsung's Note series is now synonymous with large batteries to keep those big screens going. But thanks to Super AMOLED screen efficiency, coupled with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, drain is kept to a minimum.

So that 3,220mAh battery should provide plenty of use on a charge for a full day even with heavy use. The Note 4 charges 30 per cent fast than the last model and, Samsung says, should offer 50 per cent battery after a 30-minute charge.

LG G3: 3,000mAh

LG G3 review

The LG G3 has a large display at 5.5-inches, despite its form remaining relatively compact thanks to the lack of bezel. But it also manages to cram in a 3,000mAh battery to keep that Quad HD display up and running.

The G3 comes with a 1.8A charger meaning it will charge faster than most, even with that large battery. And it should deliver a solid day even with quite a bit of use.

Sony Xperia Z3: 3,100mAh

Sony Xperia Z3 review: Third time's a charm

Pocket-lintSONY001

The Xperia Z3's 3,100mAh battery is actually smaller than that found in the Z2. But thanks to a greater processor and screen efficiency it actually still boasts an excellent battery life.

With a 5.2-inch display and an all day run-time the Xperia Z3 battery leaves few complaints.

Asus Zenfone Max AsusAsus-zenfone-max-battery

Asus took the wraps off its aptly named ZenFone Max which boasts a hefty 5,000mAh battery.

That juice box is powering a 5.5inch display and a Snapdragon 410 processor so expect to get plenty of life out of this all day powerhouse.

Intel-Powered Dual OS Windows 10/Android Smartphone Is Coming Soon

Summary

The $299 Elephone Voyney is only waiting for Microsoft to release the final version of Windows 10 Mobile OS.

The Elephone Voyney has a quad-core Intel processor that lets it dual-boot Windows 10 Mobile and Android operating systems.

Intel is reducing its contra revenue discounts on Atom tablet application processors.

I wrote about Elephone's dual-OS smartphone last May. I said it was going to have an Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) processor. WM Power User supported this assertion two weeks ago. The upcoming $299 Elephone Voyney will allegedly have a quad-core Intel processor, 3GB of RAM, 20.7 Sony (NYSE:SNE) Exmor IMX230 camera sensor, and a 2K (2560x1440 resolution) 5.5-inch screen display.

I will repeat it again - only an x86 processor could take full advantage of Windows 10's Continuum for Phones feature. No Snapdragon or MediaTek processor will be able to match the Intel x86 chip when it comes to universal compatibility with Windows legacy software.

(Source: gizchina.com)

I suspect Elephone is now only waiting for Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) to release the final version of Windows 10 Mobile so it could do the commercial launch of the Voyney in China. As of now, it's likely Microsoft's tardiness is delaying the launch of the Intel-powered dual-OS handset from Elephone.

September is almost over but Microsoft is still beta-testing Windows 10 Mobile.

Why It Matters

Elephone's wise decision to trust the Intel x86 architecture will definitely inspire other Chinese OEMs to follow its example. White-box tablet manufacturers are already selling dual-OS Windows/Android tablets with calling feature since last year.

Intel is now cancelling its discounts on Bay Trail Atom tablet application processors. Chinese OEMs might find it prudent to shift toward making dual-OS smartphones/phablets to be able to sell their products at a higher retail prices. As per Digitimes' supply chain informers, Intel will stop giving an $8 discount on $12/each Bay Trail processors.

Intel is now only willing to offer a $2-$3 discount on $15 Cherry Trail Atom tablet application processors. The official U.S. price tag of the cheapest Cherry Trail Atom x5- xZ8300 is $20/tray, but even if Intel sells it for $12 in China, the very low margins on Android tablets and phones will force Chinese OEMs to differentiate their products with a dual-OS feature to make it more attractive than the competition.

It's unclear if Intel also is stopping the $8 discount on Bay Trail Atom chips for Android smartphones. If not, then Elephone and hundreds of Chinese OEMs will shift more of their production toward Intel-powered large-sized smartphones.

There is really no need for 7-inch tablets when there are 6.3-inch phablets. The $8 discount on Bay Trail Atoms for phones is a nice incentive for Elephone and others to simply reclassify their calling-enabled tablets to the smartphone category.

With or without the discount from Intel, the Windows 10 Mobile OS is now free from Microsoft. Unlike Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Microsoft is now an enthusiastic supporter and it also offers subsidies for dual-OS devices.

My Takeaway

Making dual-boot Windows 10/Android handsets and selling them $20 or $25 higher than their equivalent Android-only phones is a win-win deal for Chinese OEMs like Elephone. Intel's decision to cancel/reduce its subsidy on tablet application processors also is one more reason for all of us to remain long on INTC.

It's high time that Intel lets Microsoft do most of the contra revenue on Intel-powered dual-OS phones and tablets. That company has far more cash reserves than Intel has now. A significant reduction on subsidy for mobile application processors might make more investors fall in love again with INTC.

If not for the huge operating losses on mobile chips, Intel would have delivered better net income and gross revenue for the last three years.

(Source)

I again reiterate my position that INTC is a buy for long-term value/DCF-minded investors. As per the chart above from Simply Wall Street, Intel remains a highly profitable company with an almost-monopolistic wide moat on server/desktop PC processors.

X-Fin's 10-year projection for the intrinsic value of INTC also is very positive in spite of me only using a mere 1% initial revenue growth rate.

New Nexus 5X UK release date, price & spec rumours: Due 29 September

New Nexus 5X UK release date, price & spec rumours: Due 29 September Google's invites are out, and the Nexus 5X will be unveiled alongside Android Marshmallow next week! Here we round up the rumours surrounding the new Nexus 5 UK release date, price and specification, plus new leaked press photos that include an Ice Blue Nexus 5X. Google's press invites are out, and the new Nexus 5X will be unveiled alongside Android Marshmallow next week!

    By Marie Brewis | 25 Sep 15

Google's invites are out, and the Nexus 5X will be unveiled alongside Android 6.0 Marshmallow next week! Here we round up the rumours surrounding the new Nexus 5 UK release date, price and specification, plus new leaked press photos that include an Ice Blue Nexus 5X.

ALSO SEE: NEW NEXUS 6P 2015.

In October 2014 Google announced its Nexus 6 phone, which followed the £299 Nexus 5 in October 2013 and £239 Nexus 4 in 2012. It was Google's least exciting Nexus phone yet, and a large part of that was the fact that for many customers the 5.96in Quad HD display was too big and the £499 price too high. Also see: Nexus 6 review.

So what is Google to do next? Smartphone or phablet? High-end specifications or affordable to the masses? With Huawei and LG having each confirmed they are on board, and both known for their ability to offer killer phones at mid-range prices, it could be about to find the perfect compromise. Whether you want a smartphone or a phablet you shouldn't have to trade value for specification.

And so, it's becoming increasingly apparent that Google has two new phones lined up for 2015. On this page you can read rumours surrounding an LG Nexus 5X; see New Nexus 6 UK release date, price and specification rumours for details on the forthcoming Huawei Nexus 6.

New Nexus 5X UK release date and price rumours: When is the new Nexus 5X coming out?

During the Google I/O 2015 keynote we got our first glimpse of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the operating system that will run on the new Nexus phones. At the keynote Google failed to mention any new Nexus handsets or tablets, but it's already possible to install Android 6.0 on the existing Nexus 5.

Android M includes a number of important and interesting changes to the operating system, including a mobile payments system, USB Type-C support and what Google calls 'more intuitive' app permissions. Android M will launch globally in the Autumn, and the developer release suggests that the Nexus 5 will get it straight out of the box.

Following tradition, we expect to see the new Nexus 5X launch as the device on which Google showcases the final version of its new Android operating system. This means we'll, like last year, see it around the middle of October, with the phone going on sale in November. Indeed @evleaks says the two new Nexus phones will go on sale in Q4 of this year.

Update 8 September: Talk Android reports that Google will unveil the new Nexus phones on 29 September, and they will be available to pre-order just two weeks later on 13 October!

Update 21 September: The Google invites are out and it's been confirmed Google is holding a press event on 29 September. We know we're going to see Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and we're 99 percent certain the Nexus 5X will be unveiled alongside it!

    Google Nexus invite 2015

    Google Nexus invite 2015

In terms of pricing, until we know the exact specification, we can merely speculate. The Nexus line is known for its value, and we really can't see Google taking prices any higher than its £499 Nexus 6. Much more likely, given the findings of its Q1 2015 earnings call, is that it will return to its previous tack: high-end devices with mid-range prices. And, indeed, LG is well-known for producing devices with flagship specs and mid-range prices. We'd love to see another £299 LG Nexus 5, but we might find ourselves less disheartened if we hedge our bets and compromise between the Nexus 5 and 6, estimating somewhere around £399.

New Nexus 5X specification and feature rumours: What to expect from the new Nexus 5X

It seems the LG Nexus will be the smaller and less powerful device of the two, with a 5.2in full-HD P-OLED screen that's only a little larger than that of the existing Nexus 5. The new Nexus 5X will also reportedly use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 processor, and feature up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 64GB of storage and a 3180mAh battery. (Update: AndroidPit says the Nexus 5X will run the Snapdragon 808 with 3GB of RAM and a 2700mAh battery.)

Front-facing speakers, a rear fingerprint scanner, 13- and 4Mp cameras and USB Type-C with QuickCharge 2.0 are also speculated. The LG Nexus will allegedly offer a metal design rather than plastic (although we have heard it will get an aluminium frame with chamfered edges and a plastic rear cover), and measure 146.9x72.9x8/9.8mm.

GizmoChina also reports (but cites no sources) that the Nexus 5X will have a MediaTek connectivity chipset, front-facing speakers, and a rear power button with integrated fingerprint scanner.

Many of the leaked specs have been confirmed by Amazon India with its listing for the LG Nexus 5X (LG-H791). As you can see it lists a 5.2in Full-HD screen, 12.3Mp camera, 2700mAh battery and a Snapdragon 808 processor (MSM8992). However, it says the phone will come with just 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which isn't 4GB or 64GB as rumoured but perhaps there will be different models. Further down the page, Amazon says the Nexus 5X will weigh 177g so we hope this is untrue.

The latest in a series of leaked Nexus 5X images comes from underkg.co.kr, which claims to show the Nexus 5X in a new colour: mint green. There does seem to be a greenish tint to the photo, but that could be simply poor photography. We'll have to wait and see.

That mint colour option has since been confirmed by Android Police with its leak of new Nexus 5X press shots in white, black and "Ice Blue".
