New law lets Michiganders present proof of registration on cell phones

LANSING, MI - Michigan drivers are now able to provide both electronic proof of insurance and electronic proof of vehicle registration when pulled over, thanks to a law signed by Gov. Rick Snyder last week.

Snyder signed a law allowing electronic proof of insurance in 2015. Last week, he signed one allowing electronic proof of registration.

Michigan motorists can prove auto insurance coverage on cell phone under approved bill

The bill to allow electronic proof of registration, House Bill 4013, was sponsored by Rep. Pete Lucido, R-Shelby Twp. It allows drivers to present proof of registration on an electronic device, such as a cell phone, when pulled over by a law enforcement officer.

Lucido said in a statement after the legislation passed the House and Senate that the bill complemented the one allowing electronic proof of insurance.

"This bill makes it easier for drivers and police officers by giving an added option to confirm registration," Lucido said. "It's common sense for this reform to be approved in 2017 and obviously the House and Senate agree with me by unanimously voting in favor of this legislation."

It is now Public Act 59 of 2017.
