As rumored, Motorola has added yet another smartphone series to its ever-growing budget lineup with the launch of the new Moto G5S and G5S Plus. Despite the 'S' moniker, though, there's not a whole lot they bring to the already crowded table except for a set of better cameras and a slightly more refined aluminum design.
For starters, the Moto G5S Plus shares a similar aesthetic to its younger sibling – the G5 Plus which isn't a bad thing at all. The new phone comes with a curved rear which offer a better in hand feel. Like the G5, it also features a water repellent nano-coating. There's a bigger 5.5-inch Full HD panel up front and unfortunately, that's all the spec bump you're gonna get apart from the dual camera setup. Speaking of which, the G5S flaunts two sensors on the back, a 13-megapixel normal shooter and another 8-megapixel lens for relatively natural depth-of-field effects. The front camera has been bumped from a 5-megapixel f/2.0 lens to an 8-megapixel f/2.0 wide-angle lens along with an LED flash as well.
Under the hood, the G5S Plus is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor, 3/4 gigs of RAM, 32/64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded, Adreno 506 GPU and a 3000mAh non-removable battery. Other disappointments include the lack of NFC and a rather dated MicroUSB port. The smartphone runs on Android 7.1 out of the box with a few Moto tidbits like the one-hand navigation and more. Moreover, it retains the fingerprint scanner on the front.
The Moto G5S Plus will be available in two color options – Lunar Gray and Blush Gold. You will be able to purchase the handset from every major US carrier this fall. Although, pricing for that hasn't been announced yet. In Europe, it starts from 299 Euros (~INR 22,500).
The smaller G5S, on the other hand, brings a marginally larger 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1080p. Additionally, its battery has been increased to 3000mAh. Furthermore, there's a much better 16-megapixel rear shooter and a wide-angle front-facing one with a LED flash. The phone is now made out of a single piece of aluminum which should provide a sturdier build just like the Moto G5S Plus. The rest of the specifications, however, remain unchanged – Snapdragon 430 processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It will be available for 249 EUR in the fall, and it's not coming to the U.S.
