Nokia Officially Back In The Smartphone Business

Nokia is now attempting to launch its new smartphone line using Google's Android operating system by the early part of next year, also nearly the same time period that Apple, Samsung, and other phone makers are releasing their new models.

"With a leading position in feature phones market already, HMD has a significant global foothold including Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, India and China from day one", the company said in a statement Thursday. HMD is ditching Microsoft's Windows OS in favour of Google's Android OS that has the lion's share among smartphones.

In a smartphone industry dominated by Apple and Samsung, HMD Global hopes to use Nostalgia to win over its huge former user base. From a market share point of view, low-priced models are more important than the flagship devices.

The feature-phone business, he points out, remains both global and profitable - a fact that should provide HMD Global with cash flow and a network of retail partners. According to the report, HMD will be selling Nokia phones across price segments while the product portfolio will include the existing range of feature phones, tablets, and smartphones.

HMD global Oy is a Finnish company that develops mobile devices under the "Nokia" brand name.

There was a time when all anyone wanted was a stock Android phone built by the hardware wizards at Nokia.

Microsoft acquired Nokia's mobile phone business two years ago for $7.2 billion.

Now, we at GizBot, have come up with a slew of reasons why HMD considers that India is a key market when it comes to the growth of Nokia during its comeback. "We want to be one of the key competitive players in the smartphone business", says CEO CEO Arto Nummela.

The completed deal will see HMD and FIH Mobile Limited manufacture handsets and tablets under the Nokia name around the world over the next decade.

After the launch of the iPhone in 2007, Nokia faltered and by 2011 was on what its first American chief executive, Stephen Elop, called a burning platform. However, the Nokia company doesn't have any relation with HMD Global, but they will receive the royalty payments for using Nokia's patents and given the rights to research and development.
