Google's new phones won't solve Android's fundamental problems

Google will still distribute system updates for all unlocked devices, but this won't be the case with units with Verizon-locked bootloaders.

Last year, in the wake of the Stagefright bug, Google announced that it would roll out monthly security updates for Nexus devices.

But the company seems to have compromised on most of those aspects when it comes to its new Pixel phones.

The cost of the 5-inch Google Pixel handset will begin at $649 for an unlocked 32GB model; whereas the cost of an unlocked entry-level 5.5-inch Pixel XL will begin at $769.

As you use the Google Pixel day-to-day, the smartphone will soon fill-up with cached data from websites and apps - so you can expect that to increase exponentially.

Google confirmed the bad news to TechCrunch, but said it plans to bring Assistant to wider Android devices in the near future.
