Samsung 2Q16 operating profits rise 18% on brisk smartphone sales

In the third quarter, the South Korean company expects that the release of a new large-screen flagship smartphone will help maintain sales of high-end smartphone portfolio, led by the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

The semiconductor division posted operating profits of 2.64 trillion won, a decline from last year's 3.87 trillion won but an increase from previous quarter's 2.33 trillion won.

Samsung late Wednesday said that its mobile unit accounted for more than half of its approximately $45.2 billion in revenue and its $7.22 billion in profit.

In addition, Samsung estimated that the stronger Korean won against major currencies in the second quarter negatively impacted operating profits by approximately KRW0.3 trillion, which affected mainly its component business earnings.

Apple undoubtedly was hurt by the fact that its principle cash cow, the iPhone, witnessed a 15 percent drop in shipments to 40.4 million units in the quarter, down from 47.5 million in the third quarter of 2015.

Mobile phone sales, including smartphones, totaled 90 million units in the second quarter, with tablet sales reaching 6 million.

Samsung's second quarter financial report of 2016show that the company has been able to surpass its projected profits thanks to the high sales of Galaxy 7.
