Google will release its own smartphone this year, says new report

This is when your Nexus device will stop getting the latest Android updates

According to the 9To5Google, the Mountain View company is already discussing with various mobile operators about launching a smartphone under their own name.

A report by The Telegraph points out that, the new device will be released by the end of the year, explains a senior source.

Unlike its arch rival Apple, Google leaves the manufacturing part to other smartphone vendors, while concentrating more on the development of its Android mobile operating system that runs on 1.4 billion devices. Not only that, much of the company's mobile service revenue is made through iOS devices, so Apple could potentially make life hard for Google if it felt threatened by its move into mobile hardware design. Most phones in the Android ecosystem are running very old versions of the operating system because manufacturers haven't bothered to work on software updates for those phones. It will most likely be announced at Google's 2016 Nexus event, alongside the two new Nexus smartphones for the year. However, the major difference between Google and Apple would be the former's willingness to allow other manufacturers to develop and release devices with its own OS. Since then rumour mills have been rife with stories about Google's plans to release their own phone.

But that might not be the only Google phone on the way. When Google partners with these companies, it has to give up a lot of control over the phone, which can include everything from internal specs to design.

Google will launch in-house smartphone.

At the Code Conference last month, Google's CEO Sundar Pichai, admitted that Google would be "investing more effort" into phones.

However Google's prime incentive was to acquire Motorola's patents and strengthen the Android platform against numerous intellectual property (IP) lawsuits.

Google producing an in house device would also also mean a less fragmented approach towards users have on OEM devices.
