When we wrote a few days back that Nintendo announced it's bringing Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to iOS, commenters tried to guess what versions of these two games we'll be getting. Will Animal Crossing be a F2P social RPG - and if yes, will that be a good thing - and will Fire Emblem be a direct port or a F2P version of the game? Well, while we don't have any specific information, we do have a few pretty good hints courtesy of Nintendo's current president, Tatsumi Kimishima.

During Nintendo's latest earnings report, Kimishima reiterated the company's aim of creating a synergy between the smartphone business and the dedicated video game system business to "realize the full potential of our entire business." And, once more, he repeated that Nintendo feels it would be a mistake to "simply release our game titles in their current form on smart devices" (bad news for those expecting full ports of anything).

Moving into specifics for the two upcoming games, he talked about how Fire Emblem is often described as "tough-to-beat simulation." So, since the upcoming Fire Emblem game will be the first time most smartphone users will experience the franchise, "this application will offer a more accessible style of gameplay compared to the titles for dedicated video game systems." At the same time, Nintendo aims to provide a fully engaging experience as a role-playing simulation game.

As for Animal Crossing, Kimishima said the company seeks to offer a connection between the smart device application and the world of Animal Crossing on dedicated video game systems. This will make it even more fun to "play in both ways, while offering a new style of play for smart devices." Make of this statement what you will, but again, if you were expecting a full port, well, I would rethink my expectations if I were you. Both applications are scheduled for release Fall 2016, and compared to Miitomo, they have more prominent game elements (not a hard thing to do). I'm very curious to see what Nintendo will deliver and what the response from mobile gamers will be. You can read the whole report here.

I am so anti f2p / IAP that it makes me game less. However.... Animal Crossing is kind of made directly for that type of payment model. I would do unspeakable things for a premium port, but nostalgia wants me to see Nintendo make a strong decision!

But Animal Crossing effectively was a free to play game you paid $60 for.

That's the point. It would make more sense for this to be that pay style. But I am not being advertised too in a premium. Even if it's an IAP only, those are still advertisements.

Regardless, I just hope my childhood hero buisness makes the most money and does what is best for them... And it works.

Buy a 3ds and buy animal crossing ffs why so many people crying

I'd rather have animal crossing on a phone than buy a handheld $$$ exclusively for a single game.

Fire Emblem F2P sounds like it could go wrong in so many ways. I guess if they balance it right then it could work out. Permadeath is a big feature of the games, so maybe they'll make it more "accessible" by introducing some kind of revive potion you can buy. That sort of thing may be one of the best possible scenarios, as I'd in no way expect them to bring a full version to mobile. What kind of utopia would I be living in to expect that?

  • Andy Clarke

To be fair in the 3ds game they brought in an option to play without permadeath so that will definetly be an option in the mobile version.

Fire emblem would work as a free game but with IAP for more missions and levels, especially if they were side missions.

I kind of trust Nintendo on this one, although I'm sure they will be slated whatever road they take.

I feel they have a good strategy here that is likely built on some of the foundations for their next console, would expect a very complimentary ecosystem.

That said, I think ports of historical games should be a distinctly different part of their strategy. No one buys a 3DS or Wii U to be able to play legacy titles, so restricting to the Nintendo eshop is just silly. I get the revenue sharing that is done with the Apple Store but that can be overcome merely by adjusting the price point upwards. Piracy shouldn't be a limitation as emulation is already available both on PCs and mobile devices. That hasn't stopped many high quality ports from selling well on the app stores.

I understand why they would make it (excuse the term) a gimmicky version of the full game, but for people like me who never plan on owning a handheld again I would pay a full price for a full game. If they made it so it was fully offline, iCloud supported for multiple device play (as they've already done with Miitomo) and had all the features of the newer games I would actually drop $40 for it. That being said, I'm probably one of the very few that would, where they will most likely make more money from smaller IAP's across thousands of more users. I'm not going to get my hopes up but I will still wish for that full version on mobile!!

When you see the word synergy in a business plan, you know they've already lost.

I just bought a Tom Nook Amiibo yesterday because I thought to myself: "Hey, why not?"

It seems that raccoon is destined to keep taking my money in whatever form he appears.

I guarantee you that trash panda fucker is going to make bank on smartphones. He'll own all our souls before the end.

    Thanks much!
