Miitomo is very much a social app - users add friends within the game from their Facebook and Twitter networks, and spend most of their time answering a barrage of questions about their likes, dislikes and ambitions. For example, if you're on the phone talking to a friend, and that friend says of a mutual friend, 'Hey, you'll never guess what Chris told me.' That person on the other end of the phone is your Mii. The Mii's in Miitomo can be customized with different outfits and looks, and you can talk to your Mii and they will talk back as they ask you questions about details such as where your favorite place to eat might be. Miitomo launched today in Japan, a year after the company announced it would be joining the smartphone world. After you set up or import your Mii, you answer a set of "conversation starter" questions which are then gradually shared within your Nintendo Network friend list. But what Miitomo does have in abundance is the sleek, appealing quirkiness that Nintendo 's had a knack for ever since titles like Wii Fit and Brain Age. Proving that this really is the start of a new era, Nintendo opened up a new Youtube channel dedicated to their Mobile games.
Nintendo have released the launch trailer for Miitomo, which shows off the wide variety of activities and customisations you can carry out in their first smartphone app. We're guessing this is where the influence of Nintendo's partner in crime, Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA comes in. Little is known about Nintendo's next console, code-named "NX". It's also less challenging than bringing "Super Mario Bros." or "The Legend of Zelda" to touchscreen-only devices - not that Nintendo has ruled that out.
Available for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices on Thursday, Miitomo is free to play but offers in-app purchases.
Gold points are like more traditional Club Nintendo coins, you register a game and earn points based on the cost of the game.
