Sony made waves overnight with the announcement of three new smartphones in the Xperia Z5 series, the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, and the Xperia Z5 Premium; the world's first 4K smartphone.
Announced at a press conference at IFA 2015 in Berlin, the three new smartphones have been added to Sony's ever expanding library of mobile phones.
The Xperia Z5 (5.2-inch screen) and the Xperia Z5 Compact (4.6-inch screen) can be considered to be upgrades of previous models, while the Xperia Z5 Premium (5.5-inch screen) makes the claim that it's the world's first 4k smartphone.
The Xperia shape has been changed with the Xperia Z5, with a continuous plate figure, a metal frame, and frosted black glass.

These three smartphones pack the same core: utilising the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM, and run the latest Android 5.1 operating system. A two day battery is also standard, as is waterproofing.

The Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Compact will be available from October 2015 in white, graphite black, gold and green for the standard model, while the Xperia Z5 Compact will be available in yellow and coral as well as white and graphite black.
The Xperia Z5 Premium with 4K display on its 5.5-inch display gives it a pixel density of 806 ppi, booting the the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus density of 401 ppi. It's absurd, fascinating for those who want to experience the bleeding edge, and might post a range of problems.
For example, powering a 4K screen will put pressure on battery life. Sony have looked to head this off with a quite substantial 3430 mAh battery in the Premium, but processing and displaying 4K in such a small package will drain it quickly.
The other issue is that barely anything is available in 4K. Therefore, upscaling of lower resolution content will be most of the job of the phone initially, and that doesn't always look great.
It's sure to be vivid screen, but there have been plenty of claims – even by Sony themselves – that say phones didn't need QHD or 2K screens for a perfect image. That's something that will need hands-on testing.
The phone thankfully does take an external microSD card, up to 200GB, really the only way you'll get 4K content onto your phone.
The Xperia Z5 Premium isn't expected in Australia until November 2015, with no pricing from Sony Australia just yet, but it will come in chrome and black and gold.
It'll be fascinating to get it in house and see just how it looks in the real-world.
