OS Update: Windows 10 is Here Sans Cortana

BENGALURU: The much awaited Windows 10 from Microsoft was recently launched globally and those with the original Windows 7 and Windows 8 are eligible for a free upgrade. For those without these versions, the price of the OS as listed on the company's online store is Rs 7,999 for the Home version and Rs 14,999 for the Pro version.

But for the free upgrade, Microsoft has strategically set a timeframe. If users do not upgrade within a year, starting July 30, 2015, they will have to purchase the software.

The operating system comes with the new Edge browser, a new Windows Store, Office 2016 suite, and redesigned photos, videos, music, maps, mail and more. It also has a feature called Continuum Mode which is designed to help people who are using 2-in-1 computers.

Windows 10 is also been designed to work with tablets and smartphones, its Xbox games console and HoloLens -- Microsoft's holographic headset -- apart from the PC.

But Cortana, the intelligent personal assistant which can set reminders, recognise natural voice without the user having to input a predefined series of commands, and answer questions using information from Bing (like current weather and traffic conditions, sports scores, and biographies) will not be available in India immediately. So, to enjoy a full version, Indian users will have to wait. This might test patience, since Microsoft has planned only a phased release of the version.
