Samsung swore it would release fewer phones in 2015, but it seems like there's a new Galaxy smartphone in the rumor mill everyday. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and the countless phones in the Galaxy A and Galaxy E series, consumers may see even more devices launch before the end of the year.
So what are these devices? And what's so special about them? We lay out everything you need to know about the (possible) future Samsung Galaxy phones here.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Active
Those disappointed in the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its fragile, unibody frame, non-removable battery and lack of MicroSD slot might be interested to know that a Samsung Galaxy S6 Active device is on the way. AT&T recently teased the launch of a new device, which just may be the S6 Active.
The Galaxy S6 Active should be rugged, meaning it should be suitable for those with active lifestyles. It should include features like dust and water resistance and shouldn't be sturdy if dropped.
Samsung leaked specifications for its upcoming rugged smartphone itself, and the Galaxy S6 Active should include a 5.1-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440) resolution display, an Exynos 7420 chip, 32GB of internal storage, likely with microSD card expansion, a 16-megapixel rear camera with 4K video recording and optical image stabilization and a 5-megapixel front camera that shoots Quad HD video.
The device should include full connectivity features including Bluetooth, dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, Heart Rate Sensor, IR blaster, a 2,550 mAh battery with possible wireless charging compatibility to both the Wireless Power Consortium and Power Matters Alliance standards, and the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini follows in the tradition of the Galaxy S5 Mini and the Galaxy S4 Mini, so the likelihood of of its release is good. Tech blog GSM Arena, discovered benchmark tests on GFX Benchmark database last month, which indicate a device under the model number SM-G9198 is on its way.
The Galaxy S6 Mini, like its predecessors, should be a smaller, slightly less powerful version of the 2015 flagship Galaxy S6. With less high-tech features under the hood, the Galaxy S6 Mini could be a much cheaper than the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge.
According to the benchmark, the SM-G9198 or Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini could include a 4.6-inch HD (1280 x 768) resolution display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chip, a Adreno 418 GPU and 2GB of RAM.
The device could also include a 16-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video recording, a 5-megapixel front camera, and the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system.
There is no word on when the Samsung Galaxy S6 Mini would release, but some suggest it will be on the market in June or July.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Plus
The Galaxy S6 Plus is one of the most recent phones rumored for release by Samsung. Reports indicate that Samsung is calling this device "Project Zero 2" internally.
When rumors if this phone first surfaced, many thought it was the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. The validity of this device is uncertain but likely. If launched, the device would be a direct competitor to the iPhone 6 Plus. The Galaxy S6 Plus is descripted as a phablet, but will likely launch without the S-Pen stylus, which was made popular by the Galaxy Note series.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Plus is expected to feature a 5.4-inch or 5.5-inch Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display, 32GB of internal storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chip and a 16-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera.
Reports suggest the Galaxy S6 Plus could launch in August.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5
The Galaxy Note 5, we know, even without confirmation from Samsung, should launch in September, likely at the IFA expo in Berlin. However, we have gotten a tip from a Samsung official that the manufacturer is launching its next flagship in September, which again, is no surprise.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is being called "Project Noble," internally and is expected to feature 2K or 4K resolution Super AMOLED display and an octa-core Exynos 7422 chip. The device will continue Galaxy Note tradition with an S-Pen stylus. It's screen size remains unknown, but should be at least 5.7-inches.
Some rumors suggest the Galaxy Note 5 could feature a curved edge display; however, standard Galaxy Note devices, have traditionally featured flat screens.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Edge/Galaxy Note Edge 2
This smartphone, regardless of its name would be a second generation device in the Note Edge series. But is it real? Odds seem unlikely.
Rumors about "Project Zero 2," the Galaxy S6 Plus and "Project Noble," the Galaxy Note 5, have circulated for weeks. But there have been no reports of a code name for the Galaxy Note 5 Edge/Galaxy Note Edge 2; any Galaxy Note rumors seem to be tied to the Galaxy Note 5.
However, prior to their release, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were both referred to as "Project Zero," so there is a chance one or more of these projects could refer to two phones.
Regardless of the current rumors, we don't know which smartphones are real and which aren't until Samsung begins making announcements.
So, while we wait, start saving your coins for your next new smartphone.
